    ABSTRACT Purpose . To determine the extent of orthokeratology (OK) Contact Lens fitting worldwide and to characterize associated demographics and fitting patterns. Methods . Survey forms were sent to Contact Lens fitters in 45 countries between January and March every year for 14 consecutive years (2004 – 2017, inclusive). Practitioners were asked to record data relating to the first 10 Contact Lens fits or refits performed after receiving the survey form. Results . Data were obtained for 295,044 Contact Lens fits, of which 2,702 were with OK Lenses and 292,342 were with other Lens types (non-OK). Overall, OK Lenses represented 1.2% of all Contact Lens fits, with significant differences between nations (p  Conclusions . OK Contact Lens Prescribing is a niche activity, with this Lens type typically being fitted in high oxygen permeable materials on a planned replacement basis to younger males. The slightly increasing rate of OK fitting, albeit at a very low level, may be attributed to practitioner interest in the reported myopia control properties of this Lens type.

    Abstract Purpose To review Contact Lens Prescribing trends in Japan between 2003 and 2016. Methods An annual survey of Contact Lens Prescribing trends was conducted each year between 2003 and 2016. Japanese ophthalmologists were asked to provide information relating to ten consecutive Contact Lens fittings between January and March every year. Results Over the 14 years of the annual survey, data from a total of 64,122 Contact Lens fits were returned by ophthalmologists. The mean age (±SD) of Lens wearers was 30 ± 13 years, and 68% were female. The proportion of rigid Lens fits decreased over time, from 35.4% in 2003 to 14.7% in 2016. Across this period, daily disposable Lens fits increased, representing 46% in 2016. The proportion of toric Lenses and multifocal Lenses gradually increased, from 6.6% and 1.9% to 12.3% and 5.8%, respectively. Silicone hydrogel material use grew from 0% to 43.2%, while mid and low water content Lens materials declined from 54.1% and 28.2% to 36.1% and 8.3%, respectively. Multi-purpose Lens care solutions dominated the market over the 14 year survey period. Conclusions This survey has revealed Prescribing trends and preferences in Japan over the past 14 years, with the main changes observed being a decrease in rigid Lens use and an increase in the use of silicone hydrogel materials and daily disposable Lenses.

    Abstract Purpose To understand long-term Contact Lens Prescribing habits of Canadian optometrists. Methods One thousand optometrists were surveyed annually from 2000 to 2015. Information was requested on the first ten patients examined after receiving the survey. Results Over the 16-year survey period, 1987 optometrists provided information on 19,143 patients. Mean age of the patients was 32.7 ± 14.4 years. Ratio of females to males was 2:1, the ratio of new fits to refits was 2:3. Soft Contact Lenses represented 94.5% of all fits. Rigid Lenses were more often used as a refit compared to a new fit. Over the 16 years, market share for silicone hydrogel materials grew from 0% to 69.6%, mid-water content materials declined from 75.7% to 14.1%. The multifocal market share grew at the expense of spherical designs, with no change in toric Lens fitting. Monthly soft Lens replacement remained the preferred option at 48.2%, followed by daily disposable at 40.8%; two-weekly replacement declined to less than10% of patients by 2015. Extended wear was likely used to refit and only to a small proportion of wearers, representing 2.6% of SCL by 2015. The Lens care system of choice throughout the period was multipurpose solutions, although the proportion for peroxide systems more than doubled by 2015 from 9.6%, to 21.1%. Conclusions Over the 16-year period, SCL material preference changed to silicone hydrogels with monthly replacement being preferred; daily disposables replacing 2-weekly as the alternate.     Abstract:

    We have been collecting data on worldwide Contact Lens Prescribing habits for almost 20 years. Over this time period, we have amassed prospective information about 315,000 Contact Lens fits in 59 countries. This article marks our 15th report in Contact Lens Spectrum and features a breakdown of more than 23,000 Contact Lens fits in 34 markets. As in previous years, our international network of coordinators distributed survey forms to eyecare practitioners in their market who then recorded generic information about the first 10 patients fit with Contact Lenses after receipt. Information is gathered about patient age and gender; whether the Contact Lenses are prescribed as a new fit or a refit; Contact Lens material, design, and replacement frequency; number of intended days per week of use; wearing modality; and care system. Contact Lens fits are weighted to reflect the number of fits undertaken by each eyecare practitioner. The study data were entered and processed at the University of Manchester and at the University of Waterloo.

    Abstract Purpose To document Contact Lens Prescribing trends in the United Kingdom over the past quarter of a century. Methods An annual survey of Contact Lens Prescribing was conducted each year from 1996 to 2020, inclusive, by asking a random selection of optometrists and Contact Lens opticians to provide information relating to 10 consecutive Contact Lens fits between January and March. Results Over the 25 year survey period, 2,671 practitioners returned survey forms, reporting a total of 25,575 Contact Lens fits. The mean (± standard deviation) age of Lens wearers was 35 ± 15 years, of which 64 % were female. Over the survey period, rigid Lens new fits decreased from 22 % to 2%. The Prescribing of silicone hydrogel Lenses has increased steadily since their introduction towards the end of the 1990s, and now represent 80 % of soft Lens fits. Soft toric Lens Prescribing has gradually increased to 47 % – a value at which astigmatism ≥ 0.75DC is theoretically corrected in all Contact Lens wearers. Daily disposable Prescribing increased steadily over the survey period and now represents 63 % of Lenses prescribed. Extended wear fits remain at very low levels, except for some Prescribing for overnight orthokeratology. Multi-purpose Lens care solutions are ubiquitous; peroxide and other systems are now seldom prescribed. Rigid Lenses and monthly replacement soft Lenses are predominantly worn on a full time basis, whereas daily disposable soft Lenses are mainly worn part time. Conclusions This report documents the evolution of Contact Lens fitting in the United Kingdom over the past 25 years. The most likely Lens fit is a spherical design silicone hydrogel daily disposable Contact Lens prescribed for a 35 year old female and worn on a part-time basis.

    Abstract Purpose To evaluate Contact Lens Prescribing trends among optometrists in Jordan. Methods Optometrists from 173 practices in Jordan were surveyed about Prescribing Contact Lenses in their practice. Practitioners were required to record information for the last 10 patients that visited their practice. Demographic data such as age and gender was obtained for each patient. In addition, data relating to Lens type, Lens design, replacement methods and the care regime advised to each patient were recorded. Practitioners were required to provide information relating to their education and years of experience. The influence of education and experience with respect to Lens Prescribing trends was explored using linear regression models for the proportions of Lens types fitted for patients. Results A total of 1730 Contact Lens fits were analyzed. The mean (±SD) age of Lens wearers was 26.6 (±7.9) years, of whom 65% were female. Conventional hydrogel Lenses were the most prescribed Lenses, accounting for 60.3% of the fits, followed by silicone hydrogel Lenses (31.3%), and rigid Lenses (8.4%). In terms of Lens design, spherical Lenses appeared to be most commonly prescribed on monthly basis. Daily disposable Lenses were second most prescribed Lens modality, accounting for 20.4% of the study sample. Multi-purpose solution (MPS) was the preferred care regimen, with a prevalence of 88.1% reported in the study sample, compared to hydrogen peroxide (1-step and 2-step), which represented only 2.8% of the patients in this study.     Purpose\ud \ud To determine the extent of rigid Contact Lens fitting worldwide and to characterize the associated demographics and fitting patterns.\ud \ud Methods\ud \ud Survey forms were sent to Contact Lens fitters in up to 40 countries between January and March every year for five consecutive years (2007 to 2011). Practitioners were asked to record data relating to the first 10 Contact Lens fits or refits performed after receiving the survey form. Survey data collected between 1996 and 2011 were also analyzed to assess rigid Lens fitting trends in seven nations during this period.\ud \ud Results\ud \ud Data were obtained for 12,230 rigid and 100,670 soft Lens fits between 2007 and 2011. Overall, rigid Lenses represented 10.8% of all Contact Lens fits, ranging from 0.2% in Lithuania to 37% in Malaysia. Compared with soft Lens fits, rigid Lens fits can be characterized as follows: older age (rigid, 37.3 ± 15.0 years; soft, 29.8 ± 12.4 years); fewer spherical and toric fits; more bifocal/multifocal fits; less frequent replacement (rigid, 7%; soft, 85%); and less part-time wear (rigid, 4%; soft, 10%). High-Dk (Contact Lens oxygen permeability) (36%) and mid-Dk (42%) materials are predominantly used for rigid Lens fitting. Orthokeratology represents 11.5% of rigid Contact Lens fits. There has been a steady decline in rigid Lens fitting between 1996 and 2011.\ud \ud Conclusions\ud \ud Rigid Contact Lens Prescribing is in decline but still represents approximately 10% of all Contact Lenses fitted worldwide. It is likely that rigid Lenses will remain as a viable, albeit increasingly specialized, form of vision correction

    Free to read Purpose The aim was to determine the extent of daily disposable Contact Lens Prescribing worldwide and to characterise the associated demographics and fitting patterns. Methods Up to 1,000 survey forms were sent to Contact Lens fitters in up to 40 countries between January and March every year for five consecutive years (2007 to 2011). Practitioners were asked to record data relating to the first 10 Contact Lens fits or refits performed after receiving the survey form. Survey data collected since 1996 were also analysed for seven nations to assess daily disposable Lens fitting trends since that time. Results Data were collected in relation to 97,289 soft Lens fits, of which 23,445 (24.1 per cent) were with daily disposable Lenses and 73,170 (75.9 per cent) were with reusable Lenses. Daily disposable Lens Prescribing ranged from 0.6 per cent of all soft Lenses in Nepal to 66.2 per cent in Qatar. Compared with reusable Lens fittings, daily disposable Lens fittings can be characterised as follows: older age (30.0 ± 12.5 versus 29.3 ± 12.3 years for reusable Lenses); males are over-represented; a greater proportion of new fits versus refits; 85.9 per cent hydrogel; lower proportion of toric and presbyopia designs and a higher proportion of part-time wear. There has been a continuous increase in daily disposable Lens Prescribing between 1996 and 2011. The proportion of daily disposable Lens fits (as a function of all soft Lens fits) is positively related to the gross domestic product at purchasing power parity per capita (r2 = 0.55, F = 46.8, p < 0.0001).     To determine the extent of rigid Contact Lens fitting worldwide and to characterize the associated demographics and fitting patterns. Survey forms were sent to Contact Lens fitters in up to 40 countries between January and March every year for five consecutive years (2007 to 2011). Practitioners were asked to record data relating to the first 10 Contact Lens fits or refits performed after receiving the survey form. Survey data collected between 1996 and 2011 were also analyzed to assess rigid Lens fitting trends in seven nations during this period. Data were obtained for 12,230 rigid and 100,670 soft Lens fits between 2007 and 2011. Overall, rigid Lenses represented 10.8% of all Contact Lens fits, ranging from 0.2% in Lithuania to 37% in Malaysia. Compared with soft Lens fits, rigid Lens fits can be characterized as follows: older age (rigid, 37.3 ± 15.0 years; soft, 29.8 ± 12.4 years); fewer spherical and toric fits; more bifocal/multifocal fits; less frequent replacement (rigid, 7%; soft, 85%); and less part-time wear (rigid, 4%; soft, 10%). High-Dk (Contact Lens oxygen permeability) (36%) and mid-Dk (42%) materials are predominantly used for rigid Lens fitting. Orthokeratology represents 11.5% of rigid Contact Lens fits. There has been a steady decline in rigid Lens fitting between 1996 and 2011. Rigid Contact Lens Prescribing is in decline but still represents approximately 10% of all Contact Lenses fitted worldwide. It is likely that rigid Lenses will remain as a viable, albeit increasingly specialized, form of vision correction

    To characterize toric Contact Lens Prescribing worldwide. Up to 1,000 survey forms were sent to Contact Lens fitters in up to 39 countries between January and March every year for 5 consecutive years (2007–2011). Practitioners were asked to record data relating to the first 10 Contact Lens fits or refits performed after receiving the survey form. Only data for toric and spherical soft Lens fits were analyzed. Survey data collected since 1996 were also analyzed for 7 nations to assess toric Lens fitting trends since that time. Data were collected in relation to 21,150 toric fits (25%) and 62,150 spherical fits (75%). Toric Prescribing ranged from 6% of Lenses in Russia to 48% in Portugal. Compared with spherical fittings, toric fittings can be characterized as follows: older age (29.8 ± 11.4 years vs. 27.6 ± 10.8 years for spherical Lenses); men are overrepresented (38% vs. 34%); greater proportion of new fits (39% vs. 32%); use of silicone hydrogel Lenses (49% vs. 39%); and lower proportion of daily disposable Lenses (14% vs. 28%). There has been a continuous increase in toric Lens Prescribing between 1996 and 2011. The proportion of toric Lens fits was positively related to the gross domestic product at purchasing power parity per capita for year 2011 (r2 = 0.21; P=0.004). At the present time, in the majority of countries surveyed, toric soft Contact Lens Prescribing falls short of that required to correct clinically significant astigmatism (≥0.75 diopters) in all Lens wearers

    The aim was to determine the extent of daily disposable Contact Lens Prescribing worldwide and to characterise the associated demographics and fitting patterns. Up to 1,000 survey forms were sent to Contact Lens fitters in up to 40 countries between January and March every year for five consecutive years (2007 to 2011). Practitioners were asked to record data relating to the first 10 Contact Lens fits or refits performed after receiving the survey form. Survey data collected since 1996 were also analysed for seven nations to assess daily disposable Lens fitting trends since that time. Data were collected in relation to 97,289 soft Lens fits, of which 23,445 (24.1 per cent) were with daily disposable Lenses and 73,170 (75.9 per cent) were with reusable Lenses. Daily disposable Lens Prescribing ranged from 0.6 per cent of all soft Lenses in Nepal to 66.2 per cent in Qatar. Compared with reusable Lens fittings, daily disposable Lens fittings can be characterised as follows: older age (30.0 ± 12.5 versus 29.3 ± 12.3 years for reusable Lenses); males are over-represented; a greater proportion of new fits versus refits; 85.9 per cent hydrogel; lower proportion of toric and presbyopia designs and a higher proportion of part-time wear. There has been a continuous increase in daily disposable Lens Prescribing between 1996 and 2011. The proportion of daily disposable Lens fits (as a function of all soft Lens fits) is positively related to the gross domestic product at purchasing power parity per capita (r(2) = 0.55, F = 46.8, p < 0.0001).     Abstract Purpose To understand long-term Contact Lens Prescribing habits of Canadian optometrists. Methods One thousand optometrists were surveyed annually from 2000 to 2015. Information was requested on the first ten patients examined after receiving the survey. Results Over the 16-year survey period, 1987 optometrists provided information on 19,143 patients. Mean age of the patients was 32.7 ± 14.4 years. Ratio of females to males was 2:1, the ratio of new fits to refits was 2:3. Soft Contact Lenses represented 94.5% of all fits. Rigid Lenses were more often used as a refit compared to a new fit. Over the 16 years, market share for silicone hydrogel materials grew from 0% to 69.6%, mid-water content materials declined from 75.7% to 14.1%. The multifocal market share grew at the expense of spherical designs, with no change in toric Lens fitting. Monthly soft Lens replacement remained the preferred option at 48.2%, followed by daily disposable at 40.8%; two-weekly replacement declined to less than10% of patients by 2015. Extended wear was likely used to refit and only to a small proportion of wearers, representing 2.6% of SCL by 2015. The Lens care system of choice throughout the period was multipurpose solutions, although the proportion for peroxide systems more than doubled by 2015 from 9.6%, to 21.1%. Conclusions Over the 16-year period, SCL material preference changed to silicone hydrogels with monthly replacement being preferred; daily disposables replacing 2-weekly as the alternate. Lens care preference continued to be multipurpose solutions. Rigid Lenses appear to be sustained for specialist fitting.

    We have been collecting data on worldwide Contact Lens Prescribing habits for almost 20 years. Over this time period, we have amassed prospective information about 315,000 Contact Lens fits in 59 countries. This article marks our 15th report in Contact Lens Spectrum and features a breakdown of more than 23,000 Contact Lens fits in 34 markets. As in previous years, our international network of coordinators distributed survey forms to eyecare practitioners in their market who then recorded generic information about the first 10 patients fit with Contact Lenses after receipt. Information is gathered about patient age and gender; whether the Contact Lenses are prescribed as a new fit or a refit; Contact Lens material, design, and replacement frequency; number of intended days per week of use; wearing modality; and care system. Contact Lens fits are weighted to reflect the number of fits undertaken by each eyecare practitioner. The study data were entered and processed at the University of Manchester and at the University of Waterloo.

    Every year since 2001, we have reported data from an international survey of Contact Lens Prescribing in Contact Lens Spectrum. This work, which first started in the United Kingdom, has now recorded information about more than 250,000 Contact Lens fits in 54 countries. Our approach is simple. We ask Contact Lens prescribers (optometrists, opticians, or ophthalmologists, depending on the country) to record information about the first 10 Contact Lens fits that they perform after the start of the survey period each year. Each fit is then weighted to reflect the volume of fits performed by each practitioner. Information is collated at our two survey offices in Manchester, United Kingdom and Waterloo, Canada. For this report of Contact Lens Prescribing in 2013, we report data for 21,673 Lens fits in 31 markets around the world.

    For the past 12 years, the International Contact Lens Prescribing Survey Consortium has sent surveys to a selection of Canadian optometrists in order to collect information on the Contact Lenses they fit and basic demographic data of the patients. Canada is one of about 40 countries that contributes to the global study and while annual reviews of the study data are presented, information published for any one market is limited due to the size of the dataset.1 This manuscript presents a more detailed analysis on the Canadian market for 2011.

    This is the 11th annual report of Contact Lens Prescribing trends that we have prepared for Contact Lens Spectrum. Each year, we capture current modes of Contact Lens practice by asking practitioners in each market (optometrists, opticians or ophthalmologists, as appropriate) to provide information about the first 10 Lens fits undertaken after receiving our paper or electronic survey form. In 2011, we captured information about 22,362 fits in 29 countries.
