Foreign market entry as network entry: A relational-structuration perspective on internationalization in television Content Production
Scandinavian Journal of Management, 2010Co-Authors: Jorg Sydow, Arnold Windeler, Carsten Wirth, Udo StaberAbstract:Summary Our study of German television Content Production firms entering the Hungarian market and other markets, and of U.S. firms entering the German market shows that foreign market entry in this industry often takes the form of network entry and, in some cases, collective network entry. The network orientation is the preferred strategy, to help firms cope with the often substantial “cultural discount” on their products. To interpret these observations, we extend the network approach of the Nordic school of international business research and distinguish between networks as a (relational) perspective and a form of governance. Our data show that, in this industry, different “market” entry strategies are implicated in network entry. Foreign market entry is a process that includes a dynamic mix of market, hierarchical, and network arrangements. Using ideas from Giddens’ (1984) structuration theory, we conceptualize foreign market entry as a process driven by the recursive interplay of knowledgeable agents and the social structure of organizational networks and fields.

Binding Customers to Project Networks - The Case of Content Production for Television
2003Co-Authors: Stephan Manning, Jorg SydowAbstract:This paper proposes that managing customer relationships in project -based industries, such as the television industry, should be looked at in terms of managing project networks with pools of competent service providers. That is, the conventional dyadic view of customer relationship is extended towards a network perspective, which accounts for the fact that, in particular in dynamic and highly innovative industries, customers as well as suppliers, in order to stay competitive, must reconcile their needs for stability and flexibility in maintaining long-term relationships. This idea is developed from marketing concepts of customer relationship management and two concepts borrowed from structuration theory. With the help of these concepts essential binding practices are discussed in the context of project networks in the television industry. In terms of empirical evidence, this paper draws on a large number of expert interviews in the television industry and a particularly interesting case of a German Production firm which, as an organizer of project networks, sustains customer relationships with all major television channels in Germany.

Although these networks are of limited duration, co-ordination of actors and activities takes place with respect to past experiences and future expectations. Project networks depend on supportive institutions in the surrounding organizational field to provide the regulative and normative resources within which practices are given meaning. In this paper, we explore the role of 'institutional thickness' for the performance of project networks in television Content Production in two media regions in Germany. We use GIDDENS', 1984, structuration perspective, to emphasize the dynamics and ambiguities of institutional processes. The analysis suggests that the two media regions differ in institutional thickness in ways which explain, at least in part, differences in the growth and viability of project networks. In turn, the change in the Production organization recursively influences the reProduction of industry practices. The co-evolutionary analysis is based on structuration theory.

Our system uses a lexical analysis of an English text and statistical models of facial gestures in order to automatically generate the gestures related to the spoken text. It is intended for the automatic creation of the realistically animated virtual speakers, such as newscasters and storytellers and incorporates the characteristics of such speakers captured from the training video clips. Our system is based on a visual text-to-speech system which generates a lip movement synchronised with the generated speech. This is extended to include eye blinks, head and eyebrow motion, and a simple gaze following behaviour. The result is a full face animation produced automatically from the plain English text.

voyeurism and exhibitionism as gratifications from prosuming social networking sites
European Conference on Information Systems, 2014Co-Authors: Matti Mäntymäki, A Najmul K M IslamAbstract:In social networking sites (SNSs), the user has a dual role as one produces Content for both oneself and for the other users, and consumes the Content produced by other users. Thus, we argue the SNS users can be characterized as prosumers. Drawing on the Uses & Gratifications approach, we further argue that voyeurism and exhibitionism are important gratifications from prosuming SNSs. We thus examine voyeurism as an outcome of Content consumption and exhibitionism as an outcome of Content Production in SNS setting. To this end, we use Partial Least Squares (PLS) to analyse a sample of 289 Facebook users. The results show that Content consumption significantly predicts voyeurism and Content Production exhibitionism. The study contributes to the literature on SNS use by disaggregating SNS use into Content consumption and Content Production, and placing voyeurism and exhibitionism as the outcomes of the two. As its second main contribution, the study applies and further develops the concept of prosumption towards SNS use.
