  • Continuing Education needs of registered dietitians regarding nutrigenomics

    Abstract:

    Abstract The purpose of this study was to assess Continuing Education needs for registered dietitians regarding application of the science of nutritional genomics in clinical settings. A cross-sectional survey was mailed to a random national sample of 2,500 registered dietitians with a 40% response rate (n=995). The survey assessed knowledge; attitudes related to benefits and barriers to application; perceptions of consumer motivators and barriers; attitudes regarding ethical, legal, and social issues; and preferences for Continuing Education. Differences were determined according to year of registration using nonparametric Kruskal-Wallis tests. Survey respondents had little previous exposure to nutrigenomics, had not applied nutrigenomics in their practice in the past year, and were not confident in their ability to apply nutrigenomics in a clinical setting, but were interested in learning more about its application. Few differences existed in attitudes about benefits and barriers to application of nutrigenomics by year of registration. The most favored learning activity for Continuing Education was seminars/workshops. The most important content areas for Continuing Education were foundational knowledge, application, and communication to the lay public. Continuing Education should focus on these content areas to allow application based on the supporting science and ways to effectively communicate the information to consumers.

  • Analysis of the Concept “Continuing Education’’ in Nursing Education

    Abstract:

    The term Continuing Education is extensively used throughout nursing Education literature. This paper sought to re-examine the concept “Continuing Education” for its meaning, relevance and appropriateness of application. The authors examined the definitions of Continuing Education from dictionaries, thesauruses, and current nursing Education literature was reviewed for meanings, usages, attributes, antecedents and consequences in line with Walker and Avant method of concept analysis. Model, borderline, and contrary cases were also presented. The paper concludes that the first step towards developing a theory of Continuing Education is a systematic analysis of the concept which includes defining attributes, antecedents and consequences of Continuing Education. The next step in the development of the theory of Continuing Education is the construction and testing of theoretical relationships between perceptions, motivation and barriers to Continuing Education. However, systematic studies of Continuing Education, whether quantitative or qualitative can be carried out to find out the impact of Continuing Education on nursing practice and this will ultimately enhance nursing science and promote professionalism in nursing.

    The term Continuing Education is extensively used throughout nursing Education literature. This paper sought to re-examine the concept ‘Continuing Education’ for its meaning, relevance and appropriateness of application. The authors examined the definitions of Continuing Education from dictionaries, thesauruses, and current nursing Education literature for meanings, usages, attributes, antecedents and consequences in line with Walker and Avant (2005) method of concept analysis. Model, borderline, and contrary cases were also presented. The paper concludes that the development of a theory of Continuing Education is usually preceded by a logical analysis of the concept which includes distinguishing properties, antecedents and outcomes of further Education. The subsequent step in the development of the theory of lifelong Education requires establishing theoretical relationships between perceptions, motivation and barriers to Continuing Education. It recommends that empirical studies of further Education, whether qualitative or quantitative can be carried out to find out the effects of lifelong Education on the nursing profession to enhance research in nursing and advance professionalism in nursing.

This work presents the strategies and guidelines for Continuing Education in power electronics. Critical issues pertaining to engineering Education, such as how to identify learning needs, define learning outcomes, design course contents, select instructional methods, assess student performance, and conduct course evaluation, are discussed in detail.
