    Abstract:

    Scientific experiments are supported by activities that create, use, communicate and distribute information whose organizational dynamics is similar to processes performed by distributed Cooperative Enterprise units. On this premise, the aim of this paper is to apply existing Enterprise models and processes for designing Cooperative scientific experiments. The presented approach assumes the Service Oriented Architecture as the enacting paradigm to formalize experiments as Cooperative services on various computational nodes of a network. Specifically, a framework is proposed that defines the responsibility of e-nodes in offering services, and the set of rules under which each service can be accessed by e-nodes through service invocation. By discussing a representative case study, the paper details how specific classes of experiments can be mapped into a service-oriented model whose implementation is carried out in a prototypical scientific environment.

    Abstract:

    With global neoliberal capitalism coming within a hair’s breadth of entirely collapsing in late 2008, and with many resigned to the fact that there is a lot more deprivation, pain and humiliation to come, the search for a far more stable, equitable,dignified, environmentally sustainable and democratic/participative economic model is now more urgent than ever for humanity. This paper is about the construction of the economic model that embodies all of these important aspirations – the solidarity economy model – and the central role that Cooperative Enterprises will play in this important endeavor. I argue here that the key practical task involved in promoting Cooperative Enterprises involves ‘getting the local institutions right’. I maintain that the optimal way to promote the solidarity economy is through the adoption of a ‘local developmental state’ (LDS) approach, an approach that has achieved much more success around the globe than many analysts are aware, and which in future can and should be directed towards building the solidarity economy model from the bottom-up through a strategic and determined focus upon Cooperative Enterprise development.

  • A collaborative architecture of the industrial internet platform for manufacturing systems

    Abstract:

    Abstract One of the most significant advances in the development of intelligent manufacturing is represented by the industrial Internet, which is combining the physical and cyber components in manufacturing systems together. Aiming to manage the interaction between the physical and cyber components, this paper proposes a collaborative architecture for industrial Internet platform (IIP) called industrial operation system (Ind-OS), which contains the industrial driver, digital thread and micro-services to provide a better Cooperative Enterprise information system (EIS) environment for manufacturing systems. The industrial driver in the edge layer is presented for each resource unit for communication, computation, control, identification, insight and interoperation, realizing a ``plug and play" fashion in IIP. The digital thread is designed to link all resource units and meta-data, which consists of a digital resource chain and an integrated information chain. In the application layer, all the businesses in EIS are decoupled into different micro-services, and a “Jigsaw Apps” is recombined to support the operation of manufacturing systems. A case study illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed Ind-OS, and the impacts caused by the Ind-OS are discussed.
