Gevriesdroogde deelmonsters zijn onderzocht op het gehalte aan cholesterol, Coprosterol, brassicasterol, campesterol, stigmasterol en beta-sitosterol. De gemiddelde inname aan cholesterol bedroeg 202 mg/persoon/dag, aan brassicasterol 1 mg/persoon/dag, aan campesterol 27 mg/persoon/dag, aan stigmasterol 15 mg/persoon/dag en aan beta-sitosterol 102 mg/persoon/dag. Coprosterol is in geen enkel monster aangetoond. De gemiddelde inname aan plantsterolen bedroeg 146 mg/persoon/dag en de gemiddelde totale inname aan sterolen was 348 mg/persoon/dag. Van 32 respondenten was de cholesterolinname hoger dan de huidige aanbeveling van de Voedingsraad van maximaal 33 mg/MJ. De gemiddelde inname aan cholesterol bleef met 25 mg/MJ echter onder deze aanbeveling. De nu bepaalde totale inname aan sterolen kwam goed overeen met de in het 24-uurs duplicaatvoedingenonderzoek van 1984/1985 gevonden inname. Oral sterol intake in The Netherlands : evaluation of the results obtained by GC analysis of duplicate 24-h diet samples collected in 1994

One of the goals of this study was to determine the amount of sterols in the duplicates of 24-h diets so that we could establish the oral daily intake of these analytes. Lyophilised samples were analysed for cholesterol, Coprosterol, brassicasterol, campesterol, stigmasterol and β -sitosterol content. The mean intake of all participants was: for cholesterol, 202 mg person −1 day −1 ; for campesterol, 27 mg person −1 day −1 ; for stigmasterol, 15 mg person −1 day −1 ; and for β -sitosterol, 102 mg person −1 day −1 . The median intake of all participants was: for cholesterol, 160 mg person −1 day −1 ; for campesterol, 26 mg person −1 day −1 ; for stigmasterol, 14 mg person −1 day −1 ; and for β -sitosterol, 98 mg person −1 day −1 . The mean and median intake for brassicasterol could not be calculated because too many values were below the limit of determination. The Coprosterol intake was below the limit of determination for all samples. The mean intake for the plant sterols was 146 mg person −1 day −1 , and the mean total sterol intake was 348 mg person −1 day −1 . The median intake for the plant sterols was 138 mg person −1 day −1 and the median total sterol intake was 313 mg person −1 day −1 . Samples were analyzed for cholesterol, Coprosterol, brassicasterol, campesterol, stigmasterol and β-sitosterol. The quality control checks showed that the sterol contents of 26 lyophilized subsamples were unstable. In these cases, non-lyophilized subsamples were taken for analysis. The mean intake for all participants was: for cholesterol 202 mg/day per person, for campesterol 27 mg/day per person, for stigmasterol 15 mg/day per person and for β-sitosterol 102 mg/day per person. The mean intake for brassicasterol could not be calculated because too many values were below the limit of detection. Coprosterol could not be detected in the samples.

Effects of increasing levels of raw or defatted wheat germ on liver. Feces and plasma lipids and lipoproteins in the rat

Ferezou, Denis LaironAbstract:Abstract The influence of increasing levels of either raw or partially defatted wheat germ on the lipid status was examined in adult rats fed a diet rich in fat (19.5%) and cholesterol (0.5%) for 6 weeks. Addition of 1.8% raw wheat germ had no effect on blood lipids, whereas the addition of 3.5% and 5.4% significantly decreased plasma total and esterified cholesterol, VLDL and LDL cholesterol, and plasma, VLDL and LDL triglycerides. The effects on liver and fecal lipids were studied with 3.5% wheat germ. Raw wheat germ decreased liver triglycerides and cholesterol and exerted no influence on the fecal excretion of fat and bile acids, but increased the ratio of Coprosterol to cholesterol. Defatted wheat germ had no effect on liver and fecal lipids, but induced a significantly higher fecal excretion of bile acids. The results indicate that either raw or defatted wheat germ can lower blood lipid parameters when present in small quantities in the diet, possibly by different mechanisms of action.

Antilithiasic and hypocholesterolemic effects of diets containing autoclaved amylomaize starch in hamster

LuttonAbstract:The prevention of cholelithiasis by dietary manipulation was investigated in hamsters receiving a fat-free lithogenic (L) diet or this diet in which sucrose was replaced by 12 (group AS_12), 36 (group AS_36), 48 (group AS_48), or 72.5% (group AS_72.5) of autoclaved amylomaize starch for seven weeks. All hamsters (6/6) had cholesterol gallstones in groups L and AS_12, while only 3/6 hamsters in group AS_36 had gallstones. None were present in groups AS_48 and AS_72.5. Excent in group AS_12, biliary cholesterol level and lithogenic index, (LI) decreased significantly in hamsters receiving amylomaize starch. Plasma cholesterol concentration was reduced by 31 and 54%, respectively, in groups AS_48 and AS_72.5 as compared to group L. The concentration of esterified cholesterol in the liver was also reduced significantly in all groups receiving amylomaize starch. Hepatic cholesterogenesis was decreased by 74 and 65%, respectively, in groups AS_48 and AS_72.5 as compared to group L. The transformation of cholesterol to bile acids was increased in group AS_72.5 (+152%) as compared to L, while fecal cholesterol excretion was strongly lowered (−31%). Amylomaize starch reduced the microbial transformation of cholesterol to Coprosterol and epiCoprosterol, and in group AS_72.5 it decreased the degradation of cholic acid. Thus, this autoclaved amylomaize starch, which could be used in human nutrition, prevents cholelithiasis and lowers cholesterolemia.
