    Cancer vaccines have represented the holy grail of tumor immunology to many. In 2003, there are innumerable approaches to active specific immunotherapy for cancer. The identification of tumor antigens recognized by and able to activate human T-lymphocytes has heightened the enthusiasm for this approach. Melanoma is one of the diseases that has been primarily targeted by vaccine approaches. The identification of peptides and proteins associated with cancer has provided strategies to target specific components of the cancer cell. However, older vaccines utilizing products from whole cells may have a number of advantages. Melacine® (Corixa Corp.) is an allogeneic melanoma tumor cell lysate combined with the adjuvant DETOX. Pioneered by Malcolm Mitchell, it has rare but confirmed antitumor activity in metastatic melanoma (5–10%).     PURPOSE: An association between expression of ≥ two of five HLA class I antigens (HLA-A2, HLA-A28, HLA-B44, HLA-B45, and HLA-C3; collectively called M5) and response to an allogeneic melanoma vaccine (Melacine; Corixa Corporation, Seattle, WA) has been described in stage IV melanoma. This study investigated whether class I antigen expression impacted relapse-free survival (RFS) after adjuvant therapy with this vaccine. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed class I (HLA-A, HLA-B, and HLA-C) serotyping on patients enrolled onto Southwest Oncology Group Trial 9035, a randomized, observation-controlled, phase III trial of adjuvant Melacine. All patients had clinically node-negative cutaneous melanoma (1.5 to 4.0 mm). Interactions between treatment and class I antigen expression were tested. Analyses involved all serotyped patients and were adjusted for tumor thickness, method of nodal staging, sex, ulceration, and primary tumor site.     Abstract:

    The water bugs represent a significant component of the freshwater biota, play an important role in trophic webs, and may have considerable economic importance. Nevertheless, systematic research of this group has been underdeveloped in Slovakia (central Europe) for decades. This work presents a list of water bug species of Slovakia based on an exhaustive review of the literature (time span: 1808–2013) and on more than 14,000 individuals collected during extensive field campaigns (2010–2014) or obtained from insect collections. Fifty-six species belonging to 11 families of Heteroptera were recorded from a total of 767 sites. Seven species were recorded for the first time from Slovakia during our research. Among those, the first exact records of Corixa panzeri Fieber, 1848, Sigara ( Subsigara ) distincta (Fieber, 1848), Notonecta ( Notonecta ) lutea Muller, 1776, Notonecta ( Notonecta ) maculata Fabricius, 1794 and Microvelia ( Microvelia ) buenoi Drake, 1920 are provided here. Confusion concerning the records of two additional species, Arctocorisa carinata carinata (C. R. Sahlberg, 1819) and HesperoCorixa parallela (Fieber, 1860) is clarified. The water bugs species inventory appears to be nearly complete (~97 %) given an asymptotic richness estimate. The occurrence of other species is discussed taking into account their habitat requirements and distribution in neighbouring countries. Recommendations for future research are provided.

    Abstract:

    An updated check-list of the aquatic and semi-aquatic bugs of Croatia is provided. Altogether, we list 14 families and 59 species (Nepidae – 2, Belostomatidae – 1, Ochteridae – 1, Micronectidae – 2, Corixidae – 21, Naucoridae – 1, Aphelocheiridae – 1, Notonectidae – 7, Pleidae – 1, Mesoveliidae – 2, Hebridae – 2, Hydrometridae – 1, Veliidae – 7, Gerridae – 10). However, for 11 of the listed species no exact locality record has ever been published. Five species, Micronecta minutissima (Linnaeus, 1758), Velia caprai Tamanini, 1947, Velia rivulorum (Fabricius, 1775), Velia saulii Tamanini, 1947, and Limnoporus rufoscutellatus (Latreille, 1807) are omitted from the list for the time being due to the lack of reliable records. Based on an examination of new material, we provide two new records for Croatia – Corixa panzeri Fieber, 1848 and Sigara semistriata (Fieber, 1848), first exact records of HesperoCorixa linnaei (Fieber, 1848) and Notonecta meridionalis Poisson, 1926, as well as new findings of Aphelocheirus aestivalis (Fabricius, 1803) and Anisops sardeus sardeus Herrich-Schaeffer, 1843 not recorded from Croatia for many decades.

    Abstract:

    In the course of surveys in the years 2000-2003 and especially in 2009, 162 species of Odonata, Heteroptera and Coleoptera (Haliplidae, Noteridae, Dytiscidae, Carabidae, Helophoridae, Hydrophilidae, Hydraenidae, Scirtidae, Dryopidae, Heteroceridae) were recorded within the area of the proposed Uvalský rybnik Nature Monument. One species, Corixa panzeri Fieber, 1848 (Heteroptera: Corixidae), was recorded for the first time in the Czech Republic. Six of the recorded species are classified as critically endangered in the Czech Republic, five species are endangered, fourteen are classified as vulnerable and five as near threatened. The occurrence of the endangered species is commented upon and suggestions made concerning the management of this unique locality.

    : Corixa (formerly Anergen), in collaboration with Organon, is developing AnergiX.RA, a complex of solubilized HLA DRB1-0401(a) together with a specific peptide from the human cartilage glycoprotein HCgp39, for the potential treatment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) [307156]. Phase I/II trials were completed in April 2000 and the final results from the randomized, blinded, placebo-controlled dose-escalation study are expected later this year [363409]. The product utilizes Anergen's AnergiX technology, and combines an MHC-derived protein with an Organon autoantigen peptide, derived from myelin basic protein and involved in the development of RA [212659,363409]. Engagement of T-cell receptors with AnergiX.RA induces apoptosis in autoreactive T-cells [227421]. Researchers at Organon identified the central component in AnergiX.RA; results from preclinical studies identifying this target protein were published in June 1997 in Arthritis & Rheumatism. Researchers demonstrated that HC (human cartilage) gp39 is recognized by T-cells from RA patients and has the potential to block arthritis in the mouse model [248543,354821].
