  • foodborne disease outbreaks in Correctional Institutions united states 1998 2014
American Journal of Public Health, 2017
Co-Authors: Mariel Marlow, Patricia M. Griffin, Ruth E Lunagierke, Antonio Vieira
    Abstract:

Objectives. To present the first update on the epidemiology of US foodborne Correctional institution outbreaks in 20 years.Methods. We analyzed data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Foodborne Disease Outbreak Surveillance System to describe Correctional institution outbreaks from 1998 to 2014 and compare them with other foodborne outbreaks.Results. Two hundred foodborne outbreaks in Correctional Institutions were reported, resulting in 20 625 illnesses, 204 hospitalizations, and 5 deaths. Median number of outbreak-associated illnesses per 100 000 population per year was 45 (range = 11–141) compared with 7 (range = 4–10) for other outbreaks. These outbreaks accounted for 6% (20 625 of 358 330) of outbreak-associated foodborne illnesses. Thirty-seven states reported at least 1 outbreak in a Correctional institution. Clostridium perfringens (28%; 36 of 128) was the most frequently reported single etiology. The most frequently reported contributing factor was food remaining at room temper...

  • VISCI - Viennese instrument for suicidality in Correctional Institutions
    Psychiatrische Praxis, 2007
Co-Authors: Patrick Frottier, Franz König, Teresa Matschnig, Michaele‐elena Seyringer, Stefan Frühwald
    Abstract:

OBJECTIVE The assessment and estimation of suicidal risk constitutes a serious and difficult task for any mental health professional. If we add to this the challenges that may be presented by a specific population at higher risk with little possibilities for thorough psychiatric evaluation, the task appears even more complicated. METHOD The "Viennese Instrument for Suicidality in Correctional Institutions" ("VISCI") presented here is based on the results of a case control study including all suicides in all Austrian jails and prisons between 1975 and 1999 and on research on literature examining suicide prevention in general and prison population in particular. RESULTS Sensitivity and specifity of VISCI are presented. CONCLUSIONS As suicide rates in custody are higher than in the general population, and these rates have been increasing within the last 20 years, the screening of offenders newly admitted to prison for their propensity to suicide is necessary to give a better estimation of the suicide risk and hopefully to stop further increase of suicide rates in jails and prisons. • Suicide prevention in Correctional Institutions: The significance of solitary cell accommodation
International Journal of Prisoner Health, 2007
Co-Authors: Patrick Frottier, Franz König, Teresa Matschnig, Michaele‐elena Seyringer, Stefan Frühwald
    Abstract:

The decision whether admitted inmates should be placed in solitary cells or shared cells has to take place immediately after intake. This decision can have major impact on the occurrence of suicide in custody. The ‘Viennese Instrument for Suicidality in Correctional Institutions’ presented here is based on the results of a case‐control study examining suicide prevention in general and within the prison population in particular. The administration of this instrument helps the officers to decide about the accommodation without an immediate psychiatric or psychological assessment. The screening of newly admitted offenders to prison for suicidality is necessary to better estimate the suicide risk.

  • Tell us how you Really Feel: Validating an Inmate Social Climate Survey
American Journal of Criminal Justice, 2020
    Co-Authors: Melissa W. Burek, John C. Liederbach
    Abstract:

Correctional facilities have a discernible social climate, or collection of contextual properties that derive in part from the perceptions of inmates. These properties include the physical, organizational, social, and emotional characteristics of Correctional Institutions. Social climate directly influences the attitudes and behavior of inmates, their well-being, and prison management. The present study describes the results of an applied research project conducted in association with a government agency that audits Ohio’s prisons and youth facilities through site inspection visits and survey data. The agency’s questionnaires, as well as the procedures used to sample inmates and administer the instruments, were evaluated to determine the degree to which they accurately reflected the perceptions of inmates and the social climate of the Correctional Institutions. We identified several problems related to survey construction and administration. The results suggest that the surveys are at least to some degree not measuring several important dimensions of the Correctional environment and the experiences of inmates as intended.
