This paper analyzes changes in job satisfaction and job preferences of Craft Workers in the US construction industry across successive economic recession–expansion cycles. The analysis used data from the General Social Survey (GSS) collected from 1974 to 2014 and compared job satisfaction and preferences of construction Craft Workers with those in other industries. The authors found that job preferences of the sampled construction respondents changed with each successive recession–expansion cycle and that the desire for high income became more prevalent than that for a sense of accomplishment in physical work, which has traditionally been the top job preference among construction Workers in general. Differences in Perspectives regarding Labor Productivity between Spanish- and English-Speaking Craft Workers

In 2009, Hispanics accounted for nearly a quarter (22.5%) of the construction workforce in the United States. However, no research has been conducted to examine how various factors influence Hispanic Craft Workers’ productivity. This paper analyzes the data from a nationwide survey to obtain Craft Workers’ perspective on construction productivity. The respondents were categorized as Spanish- or English-speaking Workers according to their declared primary language, irrespective of their ethnic background. The findings reveal that Spanish- and English-speaking Craft Workers generally agreed on the priority of the factors affecting labor productivity. However, Spanish-speaking Workers rated factors associated with supervisor direction, safety, and labor more severely than English-speaking Craft Workers. Worker Satisfaction and Work-Life Related Characteristics in the U.S. Construction Industry

Previous research argues that worker satisfaction plays an important role in retaining and attracting more Workers into the construction industry. The authors previously presented a longitudinal study at the 2003 ASCE Construction Research Congress that examined construction worker characteristics related with satisfaction, including race, union status, education attainment, age, and worker preference from 1970s to 1990s. This paper extends those analyses along with investigation of work-life related characteristics (e.g. respondents' annual income and spousal employment) among U.S. construction Workers from 1970s to 2000s, utilizing the General Social Survey (GSS) data. A comparison of these demographic characteristics between construction and other industries is made as well.

Construction Craft Workers’ Perceptions of the Factors Affecting Their Productivity

MaloneyAbstract:In efforts to quantify Craft Workers’ perspective of construction productivity, a nationwide survey involving 1,996 Craft Workers was employed. The survey quantified the relative impact of 83 productivity factors, which had been identified through a series of focus group sessions involving Craft Workers conducted on construction jobsites located throughout the United States. The findings show that Craft Workers do have a good understanding of the factors affecting their daily productivity, and most of the adversarial factors affecting productivity can be addressed by site management teams. Factors involving tools and consumables, materials, engineering drawing management and construction equipment were identified as having the greatest impact on productivity from the Craft Workers’ perspective. Analysis of Observed Skill Affinity Patterns and Motivation for Multiskilling among Craft Workers in the U.S. Industrial Construction Sector

Using extensive Craft certification and skills data, the writers apply correlation and cluster analyses to identify actual patterns of multiskilling among Craft Workers using two separate data sources. The results of the cluster analysis indicate that current Craft skills aggregate into four groups: civil, mechanical, electrical, and general support. This has resulted in the infrequent use of comprehensive workforce management strategies in the industry. Researchers at the Center for Construction Industry Studies (CCIS) have proposed a Two-Tier Approach to workforce management. The Tier I strategy is designed to improve the effectiveness and productivity of the construction workforce through effective supervision and project management. This paper presents the concepts behind the Tier I strategy and discusses the metrics and the procedures needed to implement this strategy. An analysis of 19 on-site project visits of industrial construction projects, including surveys collected from over 900 journey-level Craft Workers and supervisors, is also presented in order to validate the feasibility and potential of the Tier I strategy. Latent Structures of the Factors Affecting Construction Labor Productivity

Utilizing the knowledge of thousands of construction Craft Workers, the writers quantitatively analyzed the underlying structure of the factors affecting construction productivity and identified which factors the Craft Workers consider to be more relatively important as well. This research identified 83 factors affecting construction labor productivity through 18 focus groups with Craft Workers and their immediate supervisors on nine jobsites throughout the U.S. Next, a nationwide survey was administered to 1,996 Craft Workers to assess the impact of these factors on construction labor productivity. Principal factor analyses identified 10 latent factors to represent the underlying structure of 83 productivity factors. In addition, the relative importance of the factors' impact on construction productivity was examined based on the Crafts' union status, trade, and position (Craft worker versus foreman). The writers also compared their results to similar previous efforts, and more importantly, identified significant differences that may impact future productivity improvement strategies. This research will help industry and the research community better understand the factors affecting construction labor productivity and more effectively direct future efforts to improve its performance.

Maloney, Colwyn SayersAbstract:This paper examines the preliminary findings of an ongoing research project to identify the factors that influence construction productivity from the perspective of construction Craft Workers and their immediate supervisors. Eighteen focus group sessions with Craft Workers and their immediate supervisors from nine construction project sites were conducted to discuss the factors which reduce their productivity. Eighty-nine issues affecting construction productivity emerged from the group discussions. The major factors are recognized through Pareto analysis. Based on these preliminary data, differences in group responses are analyzed with respect to different criteria including project size, union status, level of project completion, and Craftsman/non-Craftsman status.

Sleep duration and sleep-related problems in different occupations in the Hordaland Health Study.

MoenAbstract:Objectives The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between occupation and sleep duration, sleepiness, insufficient sleep, and insomnia in day Workers and shift Workers (including night work and watches). Methods The study was population-based and cross-sectional, and relied on self-administered questionnaires. It was conducted as part of the 1997-1999 Hordaland Health Study in collaboration with the Norwegian National Health Screening Service. Aged 40-45 years, 7782 participants answered a sleep questionnaire, reporting their occupation and whether or not they were employed in shift work. Results Our study found differences in sleep duration during the working week between occupational groups; in both shift and day Workers. Craft Workers, plant operators, and drivers slept less than leaders, and non-personal and personal service Workers. Within some occupations (leaders, personal service Workers, and plant operators), shift Workers slept less than day Workers. The mean sleep duration of shift Workers was 15 minutes shorter than that of day Workers. Rise times, but not bedtimes, were earlier in Craft-and construction Workers, plant operators, and drivers than in leaders and non-personal and personal service Workers, particularly day Workers. When adjusted for shift work and working hours-compared to leaders-Craft Workers, plant operators, and drivers had an increased risk of daytime sleepiness (odds ratio 1.5, 1.8, and 1.8 respectively) and of falling asleep at work (odds ratio 1.6, 2.1 and 2.0 respectively). Shift Workers had an increased risk of falling asleep at work and insomnia. Conclusions Occupation has separate effects on sleep duration and sleep-related problems, independent of the effects of shift work.
