problem solving as a sufficient condition of the Creative Process a case for closer cooperation of creativity research and problem solving research
Frontiers in Psychology, 2016Co-Authors: Lena Franziska WimmerAbstract:In this paper, I will question the traditional definition according to which the Creative Process is the solving of especially complex problems. After a brief introduction, I aim to show that every instance of successful problem solving constitutes a Creative Process which results in a Creative product. In this view, the conventionally assumed relationship of creativity and problem solving is reversed, for creativity is not regarded as a special case of problem solving but (successful) problem solving is regarded as creativity.

the influence of Creative Process engagement on employee Creative performance and overall job performance a curvilinear assessment
Journal of Applied Psychology, 2010Co-Authors: Xiaomeng Zhang, Kathryn M BartolAbstract:Integrating theories addressing attention and activation with creativity literature, we found an inverted U-shaped relationship between Creative Process engagement and overall job performance among professionals in complex jobs in an information technology firm. Work experience moderated the curvilinear relationship, with low-experience employees generally exhibiting higher levels of overall job performance at low to moderate levels of Creative Process engagement and high-experience employees demonstrating higher overall performance at moderate to high levels of Creative Process engagement. Creative performance partially mediated the relationship between Creative Process engagement and job performance. These relationships were tested within a moderated mediation framework.

linking empowering leadership and employee creativity the influence of psychological empowerment intrinsic motivation and Creative Process engagement
Academy of Management Journal, 2010Co-Authors: Xiaomeng Zhang, Kathryn M BartolAbstract:Synthesizing theories of leadership, empowerment, and creativity, this research built and tested a theoretical model linking empowering leadership with creativity via several intervening variables. Using survey data from professional employees and their supervisors in a large information technology company in China, we found that, as anticipated, empowering leadership positively affected psychological empowerment, which in turn influenced both intrinsic motivation and Creative Process engagement. These latter two variables then had a positive influence on creativity. Empowerment role identity moderated the link between empowering leadership and psychological empowerment, whereas leader encouragement of creativity moderated the connection between psychological empowerment and Creative Process engagement.

taking personal initiative and communicating about ideas what is important for the Creative Process and for idea creativity
European Journal of Work and Organizational Psychology, 2007Co-Authors: Carmen Binnewies, Sandra Ohly, Sabine SonnentagAbstract:Using multisource data, this study focused on the Process aspect of creativity at work. A modification of Amabile's (1988) stage model of the Creative Process with the stages of problem identification, preparation, idea generation, and idea validation served as the basis for our study. We examined personal initiative and idea-related communication as two important factors for the Creative Process and for the degree of creativity of one specific idea an employee recently produced at work. In a sample of 52 nurses, we found that idea-related communication was positively related to engagement in the Creative Process but not to idea creativity. Personal initiative boosted engagement in the beginning of the Creative Process and was positively related to creativity as an outcome. Results suggest that idea-related communication is important for showing engagement in the Creative Process, whereas personal initiative is important in the beginning of the Creative Process and for idea creativity.
