    Abstract:

    In advanced technological applications, there is a constant need to ensure that the design of the human–machine interface does not add to operator Workload. This is particularly true in applications that involve safety-critical and life-threatening situations, such as those encountered in armored vehicles during combat. In this study, we examined the concept of providing the drivers of these vehicles with a new form of electronic navigation aid, which was predicted to reduce Workload levels. Experiments indicated that using these digital maps significantly reduced overall Crew Workload, primarily due to significantly decreased Workload of the driver working with the digital map. Furthermore, the new maps improved the performance of keeping to the determined route and the performance of the commander's secondary task of reporting the number of stationary vehicles.     In the special vehicle research, the Crew Workload quantitative assessment may be a human-vehicle system function rationally allocated, the occupants optimal design tasks provide important reference. In this paper, base on special vehicles semi-physical simulation simulator test environment, explores the impact of breakthrough deep attack Workloads quantitative assessment method of two typical mission profiles. The study innovative uses of cognitive attention measuring device measured the Crew Workload, to decompose mission profile, cognitive channel subjective evaluation questionnaires, and task performance and subjective evaluation of the results of the analysis.     Abstract:

    Advancements in technology have enabled increasingly sophisticated automation to be introduced into the flight decks of modern aircraft. Generally, this automation was added to accomplish worthy objectives such as reducing flight Crew Workload, adding additional capability, or increasing fuel economy. Automation is necessary due to the fact that not all of the functions required for mission accomplishment in today’s complex aircraft are within the capabilities of the unaided human operator, who lacks the sensory capacity to detect much of the information required for flight. To a large extent, these objectives have been achieved. Nevertheless, despite all the benefits from the increasing amounts of highly reliable automation, vulnerabilities do exist in flight Crew management of automation and Situation Awareness (SA). Issues associated with flight Crew management of automation include: • Pilot understanding of automation’s capabilities, limitations, modes, and operating principles and techniques. • Differing pilot decisions about the appropriate automation level to use or whether to turn automation on or off when they get into unusual or emergency situations. • Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs) are not always easy to use, and this aspect could be problematic when pilots experience high Workload situations. • Complex automation interfaces, large differences in automation philosophy and implementation among different aircraft types, and inadequate training also contribute to deficiencies in flight Crew understanding of automation

  • Effects of Automation on AirCrew Workload and Situation Awareness in Tactical Airlift Missions

    In tactical aviation, decision superiority brought upon by high situation awareness remains the arbiter of combat effectiveness. The advancement of sophisticated avionics and highly automated cockpits has allowed for the reduction of airCrew size, and in certain platforms, removal of the Crew from the aircraft entirely. However, these developments have not reduced the complex and dynamic interaction between situation awareness and Crew Workload. While many predictive and experimental methods of evaluating Workload exist, situation awareness can only be measured by conducting trials with human operators in a functional prototype. This thesis proposes an innovative methodology to predicatively determine situation awareness potential with discrete-event simulation software. This methodology measures situation awareness as both a function of task accomplishment and Workload experienced. Utilizing two common but complex tactical scenarios, this method and existing Workload measurement techniques can derive a direct comparison between a reduced-Crew highly automated cockpit and a less automated legacy aircraft. Finally, conclusions regarding the effectiveness of replacing human operators with automation in tactical events can be made and tested in future experiments with actual aircraft and airCrews
