Gross "Instruction for forensic investigators" contains instructions how to make sketches of the room in which the murder was committed. Gross gave detailed instructions how to make crime scene investigation. Explaining pictures is accompanied by instructions. Thus, the graphical method proposed by G. Gross has great importance for the development of the practice of crime scene investigation in Russia. "Transition" of the physical space of the crime scene on the square grid was a breakthrough in the analysis of the crime scene. G. Gross is one of the creators of modern forensic science significantly influenced on the development of forensic knowledge in Russia.

Objectives of crime scene investigation

In forensic science we considered five reasons of crime scene investigation: development of direction of inquiry and investigative variants for investigators; search of specific information in the form of evidence or logic investigation; search of convincing evidence justifying or evidence of guilt; search for important information in the form of evidence in order to successfully carry out accurate reconstruction of the crime scene, and find the connection between criminals with the help of the evidence. This set of objectives allows to get more knowledge about the mechanism of a crime in order to obtain detailed information from the investigation. According to Fischer, objective of crime scene investigation are the following: Reconstruction of the incident; determination the sequence of events; determination the method of committing the crime; disclosure of motive; revealing what offender might do; finding real evidence of a crime. We made the conclusion that for some Russian investigators involved in crime scene investigation, the answers to these questions are difficult, because it requires a scientific approach, deep knowledge of methods of crime scene investigation and forensic science and experience in the inspection of the crime scene.

Features of Tactics of crime scene investigation in Modern Russia

From the Berezutskiy’s point of view, tactics of crime scene investigation includes methods of the preparation to investigative action and methods of research of crimes traces, means of analysis of harmful effects, that is, those methods which are not directly included into the system of methods of crime scene investigation. The whole strategy, all its elements and tactical decisions have the procedural nature. In article we clarified understanding of Belkin R. and A. Winberg. The tactics of the crime scene examination is the system of knowledge about forms and methods of crime scene investigation in different conditions for different types of cases. We made the conclusion that crime scene investigation necessarily involves the use of criminal tactics. It is an important first step in the investigation process.

The main principles of new paradigm of crime scene investigation are the following: improvement of new scientific methods, tools and technologies that are used for crime scene investigation matches the tempo of scientific progress: relevant information about the crime scene should be as soon as possible available to the investigators; scientific and trained criminologists and scientists should control crime scene investigation in order to give guarantee that these methods are applied properly, that the data are reliable and the correct interpretation is given for these data. Development paradigm is based on legal system that is evidences lead to conviction of the accused by a court. Me made conclusion that the new paradigm of the investigation of the crime scene investigation based on the following discussion statement: crime scene investigation is the scientific study. Only upon this condition crime scene investigation will be completed successfully and on time.

Deductive and Inductive Methods of crime scene investigation

During this process it is needed apply the scientific method, logic and reasoning. We considered the examination of crime scene as deductive and/or inductive process. The deductive logic is movement of thought from the general questions to the narrow specialized questions. It often referred to a logical movement of thought "top-down". It begins from a theory and then moves to the level of testable hypotheses. Testing and verification required observations or experiments directed on testing of hypothesis. This is similar to actions in the crime scene. With regard to the deductive criminal analysis, the modern researcher Turvy (Turvey) argues that the advantages of the deductive model of a criminal investigation are very important This model requires special education and training in the field of forensic science, the reconstruction of the crime scene, and the analysis of samples and damage in general deductive criminal record. They tend to be more specific than inductive criminal record, providing significant help in achieving the main objectives of the investigation process. crime scene investigation constructed by inductive method begins from the observation and moves to the hypothesis which is more or less open and verifiable. During this investigation, the investigator understand what happened at the crime scene. This theory passes from the specific to the general questions. The main contribution of this paper includes: (1) a DCT domain texture feature extraction algorithm is proposed for CSI images, which is shown to be simple and effective. (2) the use of GIST descriptor on CSI images for the first time and combined with color histogram and the DCT domain texture feature as a fused feature, which describes CSI images from different aspects including color, texture, and scene content. Experimental results prove that the proposed method is effective for CSI image retrieval.

Integrating object ontology and region semantic template for crime scene investigation image retrieval

However, there has been little work done in this area due to limited public data access by researchers. Tested on real-world CSI images, it was observed that existing content-based image retrieval (CBIR) methods do not necessarily retrieve as effectively on CSI image database as compared to other general image databases. Hence, it is important to design CBIR algorithm tuned to CSI image database. This paper proposes a region-based semantic learning method based on object ontology which associates image categories with `objects' in CSI images. Each object corresponds to a pre-defined semantic template (ST) which is defined as the average color and texture feature of a set of sample regions. In this way, low-level features of each region in a CSI image can be converted to an `object' by comparing the region features with the set of pre-defined STs. The `objects' in an image categorize the image based on the object ontology. The above process is referred to as `On-Set'. To further improve retrieval performance of On-Set, a weighting strategy named object-frequency-based weighting (OFW) is designed inspired by the idea of term frequency-inverse document frequency (TF-IDF). In OFW, heavier weight is assigned to regions that appear more often in one class and less often in other classes. Experimental results on real-world image data proved the effectiveness of the proposed method for CSI image database retrieval.

Virtual reality for teaching and learning in crime scene investigation.

Virtual reality (VR) is an emerging technology which offers exciting prospects for teaching and learning, especially for imparting practical skills. We document here a multidisciplinary experimental study in which a bespoke VR crime scene app was designed and implemented, after which it was tested by both undergraduate student and staff/postgraduate student cohorts. Through both qualitative and quantitative analyses, we demonstrate that VR applications support learning of practical crime scene processing skills. VR-based practical sessions have the potential to add value to forensic science courses, through offering cost-effective practical experience, the ability to work in isolation and in a variety of different scenarios. Both user groups reported high levels of satisfaction with using the app and reports of adverse effects (motion sickness) were minimal. With reference to user feedback, we proceed to evaluate the scalability and development challenges associated with large-scale implementation of VR as an adjunct to forensic science education.

The semantic analysis found thatwords and phrases in case reportsaresemantic structures. Moreover, the content of a case report can be represented by the knowledge base concept (Ontology). This research developed ontology to recommend words to fill-in a case report of the crime scene investigation report about properties for the Forensic Science Police Center 4 of Thailand. The purpose is to suggest words or sentenceswhich areappropriate and have most possibilities to be used by users. The rules of ontology were defined based on theexisting documents. The ontology was bringing into acknowledge feeding unitof an application program on a tablet with Android OS to enhance the performance of the crime scene investigation process. The figures of merit of the ontology were measured by filling-in of 30 real crime cases. The results were 82.50%, 96.67% and 88.49% of precision, recall and F-measure, respectively.Thus, the suggestions based on the developed ontology can reduce the key stroke and get a shortening the time, higher accuracy and more standardized document.

An obstacle is the sentence that is needed to be typed is a long sentence. However, the format of the report can be structured. Nouns or phases of 50 criminal cases were extracted and analyzed using noun-phase analysis. Ontology was constructed from the analysis. The ontology has five topics that are Indoor scene, Outdoor scene, Clue at scene, Evidence, Lost asset and Criminal gate. Each topic comprises of several categories. The system was also developed to test the coverage of the ontology. As measured by Precision, Recall and F-measure which is 74.21%, 95.71% and 83.86% respectively.
