  • Critical Evaluation and Thermodynamic Optimization of the Fe-P System
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions B, 2020
    Co-Authors: In-ho Jung
    Abstract:

Thermodynamic optimization of the Fe-P system was performed using the CALculation of PHAse Diagrams (CALPHAD) method based on Critical Evaluation of all available phase equilibria and thermodynamic data. The Gibbs energies of liquid phase and solid solutions were described using the Modified Quasichemical Model and Compound Energy Formalism, respectively. The Fe-P phase diagram, thermodynamic properties of P in liquid Fe and stability of intermediate iron phosphides (Fe_3P, Fe_2P, FeP and FeP_2) in the entire composition range were reoptimized for resolving the discrepancies left in the previously optimized database. Several problems in previous assessments were resolved, and a more accurate and consistent description of the Fe-P system was achieved compared to experimental data. The distribution of P between molten Fe-P alloys and slag at different temperatures was also calculated to present the applicability of the present work to steel dephosphorization calculation.

  • Critical Evaluation and Thermodynamic Optimization of the Al-P and Fe-Al-P Systems
Journal of Phase Equilibria and Diffusion, 2020
    Co-Authors: In-ho Jung
    Abstract:

The Al-P system and Fe-Al-P system have been thermodynamically optimized using the CALculation of PHAse Diagrams (CALPHAD) method based on Critical Evaluation of all available experimental data. The liquid phases and solid solutions were modeled using the Modified Quasichemical Model and Compound Energy Formalism, respectively. The Gibbs energies of stoichiometric AlP compound and liquid Al-P solution were Critically optimized to reproduce the melting point of AlP and the liquidus of Al-P system on the Al-rich corner. In the ternary Fe-Al-P system, the behavior of P in the liquid was also well optimized with introduction of Toop interpolation technique (Al as an asymmetric component). In addition, various phase equilibria of Fe-Al-P alloys containing up to 30 wt.%Al and 15 wt.%P, isothermal sections at 450, 650 and 800 °C, and the solubility of P in BCC_A2 Fe-Al alloys were excellently described, compared to experimental data. According to the present optimization, an accurate and consistent thermodynamic database of the Fe-Al-P system has been developed.

  • Critical Evaluation and Optimization of the Fe-N, Mn-N and Fe-Mn-N Systems
Journal of Phase Equilibria and Diffusion, 2018
    Co-Authors: Zhimin You, Min-kyu Paek, In-ho Jung
    Abstract:

Thermodynamic optimization of the Fe-Mn-N system was performed using CALculation of PHADiagram method based on Critical Evaluation of all available phase diagrams and thermodynamic data. The Gibbs energies of liquid phase and solid solutions were described using the Modified Quasichemical Model and Compound Energy Formalism, respectively. The Gibbs energies of pure monoatomic N in both liquid and various solid states were newly reassessed for resolving the discrepancies left in the currently available database. Several existing problems in the previous assessments for the binary Fe-N and Mn-N systems were resolved and more precise and consistent description of the ternary Fe-Mn-N system was achieved with less number of model parameters, comparing to the previous assessment.

  • Critical Evaluation and thermodynamic optimization of the ti c o system and its applications to carbothermic tio2 reduction process
Metallurgical and Materials Transactions B-process Metallurgy and Materials Processing Science, 2015
Co-Authors: Zhanmin Cao, In-ho Jung, Wei Xie, Zhiyu Qiao
    Abstract:

Based on the Critical Evaluation of available phase diagram, thermodynamic, and crystal structure data, the ternary Ti-C-O system is thermodynamically assessed using the Calculation of Phase Diagram method. Both binary Ti-C and Ti-O systems are reassessed to obtain the successful description of ternary Ti-C-O system for the first time. The liquid phase is described by the modified quasichemical model, which takes short-range ordering in liquid solution into account. All solid solutions are described using compound energy formalism. In particular, a completed solid solution between TiC x and TiO y with the excess solubilities of Ti, C, and O is accurately described with the (Ti, Va)1(C, O, Va)1 solution structure. The thermodynamic models with a set of optimized self-consistent model parameters can reproduce available reliable experimental data within experimental error limits. The results are also applied to the thermodynamic analysis of complex carbothermic TiO2 reduction process.

  • a Critical Evaluation of salivary testosterone as a method for the assessment of serum testosterone
    Steroids, 2014
Co-Authors: Tom Fiers, Joris R Delanghe, Guy Tsjoen, Eva Van Caenegem, Katrien Wierckx, Jeanmarc Kaufman
    Abstract:

Abstract Although salivary testosterone (T) is often used in clinical studies accuracy is mostly questionable. State of the art data for men is sparse and for women absent. Our objective was to perform a Critical Evaluation of salivary T (Sal-T) as a method for indirect assessment of serum T using state of the art methods. Saliva was collected via ‘Salivette’ and ‘passive drooling’ methods. Sal-T and free T in serum after equilibrium dialysis were measured by LC-MS/MS Results Evaluation of Sal-T results versus free T by equilibrium dialysis (ED-T) for men gave: ‘Salivette’ Sal-T = 0.05 + 0.88 x ED-T, r  = 0.43; ‘passive drooling’ Sal-T = 0.17 + 0.91 x ED-T r  = 0.71. In women, correlation was comparable but values are higher than free T: ‘passive drooling’ Sal-T = 0.12 + 2.32 x ED-T, r  = 0.70. The higher than expected T values in saliva, appear to be explained by T binding to salivary proteins. Iso-electric focusing of saliva proteins, followed by fractionation and LC–MS/MS assay of T showed marked testosterone peaks at pH 5.3 and 8.4, providing evidence for T binding in saliva to proteins such as albumin and proline rich protein (PRP). Conclusions Passive drooling is the collection method of choice for testosterone in saliva. Sal-T is not directly comparable to serum free T due to T binding to saliva proteins, which substantially affects the low Sal-T in women but not the higher Sal-T in healthy adult men.

  • Critical Evaluation of standardized tests.
Occupational therapy in health care, 1996
    Co-Authors: Susan Kaplan
    Abstract:

Occupational therapists are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of providing intervention that can be accurately measured and documented. Standardized Evaluations not only provide a uniform administration and scoring procedure, but also allow for a comparison of an individual's performance to that of a normative sample. The effective and ethical use of standardized test scores requires that the examiner be proficient in test administration and understand the basic measurement and statistical concepts behind the interpretation process. This article addresses concepts relevant to the Critical Evaluation of a standardized test.

  • Critical Evaluation of municipal solid waste composting and potential compost markets
    Bioresource Technology, 2009
Co-Authors: Mark Farrell, Davey L Jones
    Abstract:

Mechanical biological treatment (MBT) of mixed waste streams is becoming increasingly popular as a method for treating municipal solid waste (MSW). Whilst this process can separate many recyclates from mixed waste, the resultant organic residue can contain high levels of heavy metals and physical and biological contaminants. This review assesses the potential end uses and sustainable markets for this organic residue. Critical Evaluation reveals that the best option for using this organic resource is in land remediation and restoration schemes. For example, application of MSW-derived composts at acidic heavy metal contaminated sites has ameliorated soil pollution with minimal risk. We conclude that although MSW-derived composts are of low value, they still represent a valuable resource particularly for use in post-industrial environments. A holistic view should be taken when regulating the use of such composts, taking into account the specific situation of application and the environmental pitfalls of alternative disposal routes.
