    Abstract:

    The Constructivist Learning Environment Survey is an instrument used for assessing students’ and teachers’ perceptions of their learning environments. The Teacher Constructivist Learning Environment Survey (TCLES) was created to better enable teachers and researchers to determine teachers’ perception of their use of constructivist approaches in their classrooms. This article reports the development and validation of a modified Turkish version of the TCLES with 449 teachers chosen randomly from primary schools in Turkey. The validity of the TCLES was investigated by means of explanatory and the confirmatory factor analyses, whereas the Cronbach Alpha Coefficient was used to assess the internal consistency of the scales. The factor analyses were carried out to check the factor structure of the Turkish adaptation of TCLES. The factor analysis revealed that the Turkish adaptation of the original survey consisted of 30 items with the same six-scale structure as the original survey.

    Abstract:

    Abstract Objective To translate into Arabic and validate the SF-36 quality of life index in a Tunisian Arabic population. Background No validated Arabic quality of life index is published. Design Arabic translation of the SF-36 scale was obtained by the “forward/backward translation” method. Adaptations were made after a pilot study involving 22 subjects from general population. Inter-rater reliability was assessed by use of intraclass correlation Coefficient (ICC) and Bland and Altman method. Construct validity was assessed by Spearman rank correlation Coefficient (convergent and divergent validity), and factor analysis with Varimax rotation. Internal consistency was assessed by Cronbach Alpha Coefficient. Results We note that 130 Tunisian subjects were included in the validation study. No items were excluded. Inter-rater reliability was excellent (ICC = 0.98). Cronbach Alpha Coefficient was 0.94 conferring to translated index a good internal consistency. Expected divergent and convergent validity results suggested good construct validity. Two main factors were extracted by factor analysis and explained 62.3% of the cumulative variance: the first factor represented mental component, the second physical component. The Cronbach Alpha Coefficient was 0.88 and 0.91 respectively for factor 1 and factor 2. Conclusion We translated into Arabic language and adapted the SF-36 scale for use in Tunisian population. The Arabic version is reliable and valid. Although the scale was validated in a Tunisian population, we expect that it is suitable for other Arab populations, especially North Africans. Further studies are needed to confirm such a hypothesis.

    We propose an information-theoretic alternative to the popular Cronbach Alpha Coefficient of item reliability. Particularly suitable for contexts in which instruments are scored on a strictly nonnumeric and non ordinal scale, our proposed index is based on functions of the entropy of the empirical distributions defined on the sample space of responses. Our proposed reliability index tracks the Cronbach Alpha Coefficient uniformly while offering several other advantages discussed in great details in this paper.

    Abstract:

    Objective The aim of this study was to test the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the diabetes quality of life (DQOL) questionnaire for use with patients with diabetes. Methods Turkish version of the generic quality of life (QoL) scale 15D and DQOL, socio-demographics and clinical parameter characteristics were administered to 150 patients with type 2 diabetes. Study participants were randomly sampled from the Endocrinology and Diabetes Outpatient Department of Dr. Lutfi Kirdar Kartal Education and Research Hospital in Istanbul, Turkey. Results The Cronbach Alpha Coefficient of the overall DQOL scale was 0.89; the Cronbach Alpha Coefficient ranged from 0.80 to 0.94 for subscales. Distress, discomfort and its symptoms, depression, mobility, usual activities, and vitality on the 15 D scale had statistically significant correlations with social/vocational worry and diabetes-related worry on the DQOL scale indicating good convergent validity. Factor analysis identified four subscales: satisfaction”, impact”, “diabetes-related worry”, and “social/vocational worry”. Conclusion Statistical analyses showed that the Turkish version of the DQOL is a valid and reliable instrument to measure disease related QoL in patients with diabetes. It is a simple and quick screening tool with about 15 ± 5.8 min administration time for measuring QoL in this population.
