Research Policy, 2008Co-Authors: Jasjit SinghAbstract:Abstract We explore the impact of geographic dispersion of a firm's R&D activities on the quality of its innovative output. Using data on over half a million patents from 1127 firms, we find that having geographically distributed R&D per se does not improve the quality of a firm's innovations. In fact, distributed R&D appears to be negatively associated with average value of innovations. This suggests that potential gains from access to diverse ideas and expertise from different locations are, on average, offset by difficulty in achieving integration of knowledge aCross multiple locations. To investigate whether the innovating teams that do manage Cross-Fertilization of ideas from different locations achieve more valuable innovations, we analyze innovations for which there is evidence of such knowledge Cross-Fertilization along any of the followings dimensions: knowledge sourcing from other locations within the firm, having at least one inventor with Cross-regional ties, and having at least one inventor that has recently moved from another region. Analysis along all three dimensions consistently reveals a direct positive effect Cross-regional knowledge integration has on innovation quality, as well as a positive interaction effect of Cross-regional knowledge integration and distributed R&D for innovation quality. More generally, our findings provide new evidence regarding the importance of Cross-unit integrative mechanisms for achieving superior performance in multi-unit firms.

Recently, the formal link between this research area and satisfiability modulo theories (or SMT) was established. This link allows the Cross-Fertilization between traditionally different solving technologies. The paper presents the system ezsmt, one of the first SMT-based solvers for constraint answer set programming. It also presents the comparative analysis of the performance of ezsmt in relation to its peers including solvers EZCSP, CLINGCON, and MINGO. Experimental results demonstrate that SMT is a viable technology for constraint answer set programming.

Size-dependent discrimination of mating partners in the simultaneous hermaphroditic cestode Schistocephalus solidus
Behavioral Ecology, 2002Co-Authors: Annelis Lüscher, Claus WedekindAbstract:The cestode Schistocephalus solidus is a simultaneous hermaphrodite that reproduces in the gut of birds, or for this study in an in vitro system that simulates the gut of the bird. Like many other helminth parasites, S. solidus can reproduce by self- and Cross-Fertilization. Hermaphrodites are expected to mate not primarily to get their own eggs fertilized, but rather to get the opportunity to fertilize a partner’s eggs. Because S. solidus has a size-dependent sex allocation (i.e., larger worms are more biased toward female allocation and produce more egg mass), we expect larger individuals to be attractive mating partners for smaller ones. However, this may be a one-directional preference, as smaller individuals may not be attractive to larger ones. We tested this experimentally by studying the reaction of focal worms of different sizes to a compartment containing a potential mating partner that was either smaller or larger than the focal worm. The focal worms were, on average, closer to the compartment containing the stimulus than to an empty control compartment. Moreover, they indeed showed a preference for larger stimulus worms than for smaller ones. They even tended to avoid being close to stimulus worms of very small size compared to themselves. This may reveal a general preference for Cross-Fertilization over selfing, but it also indicates that all the genetic benefits from outCrossing do not necessarily outweigh the costs of mating with a relatively small individual and that the worms may take this into account in their reproductive decisions.
