  • strong quantum Darwinism and strong independence are equivalent to spectrum broadcast structure
    Physical Review Letters, 2019
Co-Authors: Thao P Le, Alexandra Olayacastro
    Abstract:

How the objective everyday world emerges from the underlying quantum behavior of its microscopic constituents is an open question at the heart of the foundations of quantum mechanics. Quantum Darwinism and spectrum broadcast structure are two different frameworks providing key insight into this question. Recent works, however, indicate these two frameworks can lead to conflicting predictions on the objectivity of the state of a system interacting with an environment. Here, we provide a resolution to this issue by defining strong quantum Darwinism and proving that it is equivalent to spectrum broadcast structure when combined with strong independence of the subenvironments. We further show that strong quantum Darwinism is sufficient and necessary to signal state objectivity without the requirement of strong independence. Our Letter unveils the deep connection between strong quantum Darwinism and spectrum broadcast structure, thereby making fundamental progress toward understanding and solving the emergence of classicality from the quantum world. Together they provide us a sharper understanding of the transition in terms of state structure, geometry, and quantum and classical information.

  • Social Darwinism in American Human Geography: a study of selected works by Ellsworth Huntington and Ellen Semple
Faculdade de Filosofia Letras e Ciências Humanas, 2020
    Co-Authors: Coscioni, Fernando José
    Abstract:

The thesis seeks, under a methodological concern that puts in dialogue Intellectual History and History of Geography, to understand the impact of Social Darwinism on late nineteenth and early twentieth century thinking in order to elucidate existing relationships between this intellectual current and the epistemological and philosophical foundation of the works of Ellsworth Huntington (1876-1947) and Ellen Semple (1863-1932), two of the leading authors of Human Geography in the USA national context from the 1900s to 1930s. The relationships among the institutionalization of academic geography in the USA, the strength of Social Darwinism as a philosophical and epistemological reference framework in the intellectual field of the period, the trajectories of the two geographers and the ideas contained in the works \"Civilization and Climate\" (1915/1924), by Ellsworth Huntington, and \"Influences of Geographic Environment\" (1911), by Ellen Semple, are studied along the thesis. In addition to these two works which receive more detailed analysis, other contributions of both of them for the discipline are addressed in order to situate their respective intellectual efforts in the broader socioeconomic, geopolitical, epistemological and ideological scenario that characterized the first decades of the twentieth century

  • Social Darwinism in early twentieth century Human Geography: the case of Ellen Semple’s work Influences of Geographic Environment
Programa de Pós-Graduação de Geografia Humana e Programa de Pós-Graduação de Geografia Física, 2018
    Co-Authors: Coscioni, Fernando José
    Abstract:

The article seeks to explain the relationship between Social Darwinism, the institutionalization of Human Geography in the United States in the first decades of the twentieth century, and the epistemological and philosophical positions underlying the work Influences of Geographic Environment(1911) written by Ellen Semple (1863-1932). The book in question was one of the main comprehensive attempts at theoretical systematization of Human Geography produced in the US during the critical period of expansion of the discipline university's presence in the country. We’ll defend the hypothesis that the ideas presented by the geographer in this work clearly demonstrate that the construction of the disciplinary field in the English-speaking world took place from the internalization of intellectual positions derived from the evolutionary debate that arrived at the Human Sciences through Social Darwinism and that were favored by the geopolitical context of the rise of imperialism.O artigo busca explicar a relação entre o Darwinismo Social, a institucionalização da Geografia Humana nos EUA nas primeiras décadas do século XX e as posturas epistemológicas e filosóficas que fundamentam a obra “Influences of Geographic Environment” (1911), escrita por Ellen Semple (1863-1932).

  • Anti-Zeno-based dynamical control of the unfolding of quantum Darwinism
    'American Physical Society (APS)', 2020
Co-Authors: Lorenzo Salvatore, Paternostro Mauro, Palma G. Massimo
    Abstract:

We combine the collisional picture for open system dynamics and the control of the rate of decoherence provided by the quantum (anti-)Zeno effect to illustrate the temporal unfolding of the redundant encoding of information into a multipartite environment that is at the basis of quantum Darwinism, and to control it. The rate at which such encoding occurs can be enhanced or suppressed by tuning the dynamical conditions of system-environment interaction in a suitable and remarkably simple manner. This would help the design of a new generation of quantum experiments addressing the elusive phenomenology of quantum Darwinism and thus its characterization

    'FapUNIFESP (SciELO)', 2017
Co-Authors: Vetö Honorato Silvana, Vallejo, Mauro Sebastián
    Abstract:

The theoretical work of Sigmund Freud contains multiple references to the topic of archaic inheritance and phylogeny. The aim of this paper is to analyze this aspect of his work, in order to point out the limitations of its most frequent interpretations, which tend to perceive the impact of Darwinism on Freud, or simply deny its relevance. We intend to prove that using phylogeny responded entirely to a clinical question regarding the etiology of neuroses.
