Alternative media and alternative journalism: Theoretical approaches -AND- Alternative media: The life support of journalism in Turkey
2017Co-Authors: Gurleyen PinarAbstract:Essay 1: “Alternative Media and Alternative Journalism: Theoretical Approaches” sets the theoretical framework of two interrelated essays that seek to understand the democratic significance of alternative journalism in Turkey. The essay first examines the process- and content-oriented approaches outlining how they define alternative media and conceptualize alternative media’s democratizing potentials. Next, the essay presents some of the characteristics of alternative journalism such as native reporting and inverting the hierarchy of access as well as discussions around journalistic objectivity and funding in relation to the process- and content-oriented approaches. The essay argues that while different theorizations enable us to understand the democratic significance of alternative media and alternative journalism, in practice, they should not be used as a Definitive Criterion due to the dynamic and context -bound nature of alternative media. Communities and social movements may prioritize or combine these approaches depending on their needs and goals. Essay 2: “Alternative Media: The Life Support of Journalism in Turkey” applies the theories explored in the first essay to the Turkish context, focusing particularly on the period under the rule of the Adalet ve Kalkinma Partisi (The Justice and Development Party- AKP) which came to power in 2003.The essay argues that in the absence of a functioning mainstream media in Turkey, alternative media and alternative journalism take on the watchdog and information roles which are attributed to mainstream media in liberal theories. Furthermore, they act as a rhizome for different dissident groups and change the epistemology of traditional journalism by broadening the definition of news, adopting news values that are more relevant for their audiences and changing the sourcing routines. Finally, they offer a suitable venue of collaboration between scholars and activists in order to develop a more dynamic and responsible form of journalism

Thus, the development of a Criterion which takes into account the maximum number of indicators and hydraulic devices and is based on common methodological principles is an important scientific and technical task for the assessment of the technical level of hydraulic machines, hydraulic units, and hydraulic devices. Based on a systematic analysis of the technical level evaluation indicators of a wide range of hydraulic drive system elements, namely hydraulic machines, hydraulic units, and hydraulic devices, a Definitive Criterion for assessing their technical level is synthesized. There were two stages in the study: theoretical and experimental. Initially, the most important factors influencing the reliability and efficiency of hydraulic devices were defined on the basis of operations research methods (hierarchy analysis method and multi criteria optimization). After the synthesis of the Criterion, an experimental test was carried out based on a comparison of maintenance costs of real hydraulic devices. The obtained Criterion allows one to make an assessment depending on constructive and operational indicators, based on common methodological principles. A comparison of the characteristics of maintenance costs of hydraulic devices per unit of power was made. Characteristic curves are hyperbolic, which proves the validity of the Criterion.

This prospective study blindly investigates the accuracy of an ultrasonographic score, derived from liver, spleen and portal vein features, in predicting the final diagnosis in 212 patients with compensated chronic liver disease undergoing percutaneous liver biopsy. Results: Taking biopsy as the standard, the ultrasonographic score differed significantly between chronic hepatitis (39±33) and cirrhosis (100±35) ( p p Conclusions: Our data suggest that ultrasound is accurate in predicting the final diagnosis in patients with compensated chronic liver disease and may identify cirrhosis even in the absence of a typical histopathological pattern. However, neither percurtaneous liver biopsy nor ultrasonography can be assumed to be the Definitive Criterion for the diagnosis of compensated cirrhosis.

FRONTLINE: Gentle sounds, distant roar: a watershed year for journalism as research
'Auckland University of Technology (AUT) Library', 2020Co-Authors: Nash ChrisAbstract:The Australian and New Zealand Standard Research Classification (ANZSRC) 2020 decision on disciplinary categories has profound implications for journalism as a research discipline. Journalism Practice and Professional Writing retain their six-digit Fields of Research (FoR) code within the Creative Arts and Writing Division, a new six-digit FoR of Journalism Studies has been created in the Division of Language, Communication and Culture, and three new FoR codes of Literature, Journalism and Professional Writing have been created for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, Māori and Pacific Peoples within the new Indigenous Studies Division. This categorisation both confirms Journalism as a sovereign and independent discipline distinct from Communication and Media Studies, which has been in bitter contention for more than two decades. The ANZSRC confirmed its 2008 policy that the sole and Definitive Criterion for categorisation was methodology. This article explores the welcome ramifications of this decision for Journalism within Australasian university-based journalism and charts some of the issues ahead for journalism academics as they embark on the long overdue and fraught path to disciplinary self-recognition as an equal among the humanities and social sciences.
