Removing the ink, clay, coatings and contaminants from paper waste in order to produce recycled fibres creates large amounts of Deinking paper sludges. The preparation of biochar from pyrolysis of this waste and its use in soil remediation contaminated with heavy metals could be an interesting valorization alternative. Our aim was to study the influence of biochar from Deinking paper sludge (HP) pyrolysis in the treatment of Zn-polluted soils. Three different soils contaminated with 2000 mg Zn kg−1 were amended at a rate of 10% with Deinking paper sludge and Deinking paper sludge biochar prepared at three different temperatures (300, 400 and 500 °C). Soils were incubated under laboratory conditions, and soluble Zn was measured. The addition of biochar reduced the amount of mobile Zn. Finally, Zn solubility decrease was more pronounced for biochars prepared at a higher temperature. Copyright © 2016 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Enzymatic deinked pulp decreased the requirement of chemicals to nearly 50% and gave same optical properties of pulp as obtained by conventional Deinking process. This bioDeinking plus chemical Deinking approach resulted in a decrease of 20.15% and 22.64% in BOD and COD values of effluents and a gain of 10.71% in viscosity, 7.49% in breaking length, 10.52% in burst factor and 6.25% in tear factor as compared to conventional chemical Deinking. This is the first report mentioning the use of xylanase and pectinase produced from a cellulase free alkalo-thermotolerant bacterial strain in the same cost effective agricultural residues based production medium for Deinking and will help in making the process ecofriendly with 50% reduction in chemicals, commercially viable with better paper quality.

Increasingly, drinking source water protection programs rely on the active participation of various stakeholders with differing degrees of water science knowledge. A drinking source water quality index presents a potential communication and analysis tool to facilitate cooperation between diverse interest groups as well as represent composite water quality. We tested the effectiveness of the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment Water Quality Index (CCME WQI) in capturing expert assessments of drinking water quality. In cooperation with a panel of drinking water quality experts we identified a core set of parameters to reflect common source water concerns. Drinking source water target values were drafted for use in the index corresponding to two basic treatment levels. Index scores calculated using the core parameter set and associated source water target values were strongly correlated with expert assessments of water quality. We recommend a modified index calculation procedure to accommodate parameters measured at different frequencies within any particular study period. The resulting drinking source water CCME WQI provides a valuable means of monitoring, communicating, and understanding surface source water quality.

This study compares the use of cellulases/hemicellulases versus the laccase-mediator system for Deinking printed fibers from newspapers and magazines. For this purpose, two commercial enzyme preparations with endoglucanase and endoxylanase activities (Viscozyme Wheat from Aspergillus oryzae and Ultraflo L from Humicola insolens, Novozymes) and a commercial laccase (NS51002 from Trametes villosa, Novozymes), the latter in the presence of synthetic or natural (lignin-related) mediators, were evaluated. The enzymatic treatments were studied at the laboratory scale using a standard chemical Deinking sequence consisting of a pulping stage; an alkaline stage using NaOH, sodium silicate and fatty acid soap; and a bleaching stage using hydrogen peroxide. The handsheets were then prepared and their brightness, residual ink concentration, and strength properties were measured. Among the different enzymatic treatments assayed, both carbohydrate hydrolases were found to deink the secondary fibers more efficiently. Brightness increased up to 3–4% ISO on newspaper fibers, being Ultraflo 20% more efficient in the ink removal. Up to 2.5% ISO brightness increase was obtained when magazine fibers were used, being Viscozyme 9% more efficient in the ink removal. Regarding the laccase-mediator system, alone or in combination with carbohydrate hydrolases, it was ineffective in Deinking both newspaper and magazine fibers, resulting in pulps with worse brightness and residual ink concentration values. However, pulp Deinking by the laccase-mediator system was displayed when secondary fibers from printed cardboard were used, obtaining up to 3% ISO brightness increase and lower residual ink concentrations.
