    Abstract:

    This study deals with the synthesis of nano-copper on Denim Garment for antibacterial properties and the combination with nano-clay to achieve decolored and old looking Garment. In-situ synthesis of nano-copper was carried out on Denim Garment by the reduction of copper(II) sulfate with glucose as a reducing agent through a simple and cost-effective route. Color of the samples were determined by L*a*b* indices and also color differences were measured to realize the action of nano-copper and nano-clay on the Garments. UV–visible spectrum of the remaining solution after the treatment confirmed synthesis of copper nanoparticles in the solution. XRD and EDX analyses on the treated Garments proved the synthesis of the nano-copper and presence of nano-clay on the treated samples. SEM images showed the shapes, sizes and distributions of the nano-copper and nano-clay particles on the Garments. A significant reduction for the growth of Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria was obtained on the treated Garment that was durable against washing.

    Abstract In this research, discoloration of indigo dyed Denim Garment along with color free effluent is introduced by using a combination of bio and nano-treatment. Indigo dyed Denim Garment were treated with amylase, cellulase, laccase and their combination with modified Montmorillonite based nano clay and mineral clay in the conventional washing machine. Adsorption of released indigo dye in the washing machine on the clay particles essentially open up new opportunity for possible reuse of washing effluent. The colorimetric properties of the treated Garments were measured and the color changes expressed in CIE L*a*b* system. The surfaces of the treated fabrics were studied by scanning electron microscope and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. UV-Vis, Raman and transmission electron microscopy were used to study the possible interaction between the Montmorillonite and indigo dye. The results revealed the possibility of using combination of laccase and Montmorillonite in Denim washing as a competitor process with conventional bio-washing with enzyme producing lower indigo staining on the Denim Garment.

    Abstract:

    In this study a simple green route was used for producing worn-look Denim Garments with antibacterial property. Silver nanoparticles were successfully synthesized on Denim fabrics by reducing silver nitrate using cellulosic chains of cotton, starch and/or glucose in alkali media. Glucose had the ability to reduce indigo dye and resulted in better control of particle size and stability. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and UV–vis spectroscopy were employed to characterize the synthesized Ag nanoparticles. The treated Denim fabrics were also characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman spectroscopy and colorimetric measurements. The results indicated the successful synthesis of nano silver particles with average particle size of 30–40 nm on the indigo dyed cellulosic fabric along with Denim color reduction. Although the fabrics showed antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus, a decrease in the antibacterial feature was observed in presence of glucose as a suitable nutrient for the growth of bacteria.

  • Physico-Mechanical Properties of Finished Denim Garment by Stone-Enzymatic Treatment

    Washing of fresh-assembled Denim Garment is a fundamental finishing treatment in textile and Garment industries and has the largest effect on the physico-mechanical properties on finished Denim Garment. In this study, modification of Denim Garment by washing using pumice stone mixed with cellulase enzyme was investigated. The fresh-assembled Denim pants, twill 3/1 weave and composition 100% cotton, have been processed by stone-enzymatic treatment using parameters namely concentrations of pumice stone (10 to 70%) (owg) mixed with concentration of cellulase enzyme (2.0%) (owg) at washing temperature (55oC) and pH (4.5-7.0) for treatment time (40 min) in the fiber to liquor ratio of 1:10 in an industrial sample washing machine. In order to evaluate the influence of these washing parameters on the properties of Denim Garment like tensile strength, elongation at break, fabric weight, color change, dimensional characteristics, stiffness and water absorption, has been determined. Fabric surface was also examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and fluorescence microscope (FM). It can be concluded that the washing parameters had influence on the physico-mechanical properties of finished Denim Garment. Especially stone-enzymatic treatment helps to get the required color fading effect and softness of Denim Garment, which gave a new-look appearance and good wear performance to the fabric distinctly. The results indicate that for producing sustainable Denim Garment the optimized washing condition for the best value is 30% pumice stone mixed with 2.0% cellulase enzyme in the stone-enzymatic treatment.

  • Sustainable Washing for Denim Garments by Enzymatic Treatment

    Abstract:

    Denim Garment is the most preferred of today’s youth. This paper presents the effect of enzyme wash using cellulase enzyme on the properties of Denim Garments to develop novel design and fashion. Three parameters in enzyme washing namely concentration of enzyme, washing temperature and time at pH 5.5 were considered. To investigate the optimum washing condition, indigo dyed cotton Denim Garments (trousers) were chosen and processed by enzyme with the concentration of 0.5% to 3.5%, temperature 40°C to 70°C and time 20 min to 60 min for the achievement with desired worn and aged effect. The effect of each parameter is discussed, and Denim Garment’s properties like tensile strength, elongation at break, weight loss, stiffness, water absorption, shrinkage, color fading and morphological values by SEM were evaluated. The optimized washing condition for the best value is 2% enzyme concentration at 55°C for 40 min.   • Bleach Washing Combined with Pumice Stone for the Modification of Denim Garments

    Abstract:

    Washing of Denim Garment with pumic stone combined with bleaching powder was investigated to preserve the quality and to create more distress worn-look fashionable Denim Garment. For this, regular Denim trouser (twill 3/1 weave, composition 100 % cotton) was selected for the present investigation. The Denim trouser has been processed by stone-bleach washing technique, using various concentrations of pumice stone (10 to 70%) (owg) with 10 g/L bleaching powder at 40 oC for 20 min. In order to evaluate the influence of pumice stone on physicomechanical properties like tensile strength, elongation at break, fabric weight, colour change, the dimensional characteristics (shrinkage/ extensibility), stiffness and water absorption has been determined. Fabric surface was also examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM). It can be concluded that pumice stone made the influence on Denim properties, whereas in producing durable and distressed worn look Denim Garment the optimised washing condition for the best value is determined.
