This method provides a positive identification. The importance of forensic odontology was especially recognized through the identification of the victims of the JAL crash in 1985. With this as a start, police Dental Surgeon system and Japanese Society of Forensic Odontology were founded and fulfilled an important function. In this paper, the history, education and present condition of forensic odontology in Japan are described.

International Arab Journal of Dentistry, 2015Co-Authors: Islam Khalil, Khadiga Hassan, Eman KheirAbstract:The present study is a descriptive cross-sectional study that was conducted to assess the level of knowledge about halitosis among Dental Surgeons in Khartoum city. One hundred and six Dental Surgeons were randomly selected from two Dental teaching hospitals: Khartoum Dental Teaching Hospital and Ribat Teaching Hospital in Khartoum city. A fully structured, close ended questionnaire was used. Data collected was assembled and analyzed using the SPSS statistical software. Most of the respondents were general practitioners. The knowledge about the causes and diagnosis of halitosis was generally poor (81%). The awareness about the treatment was generally moderate (37%) and good (38%).No association was found between gender and the level of knowledge about halitosis (p>0.05).A significant association was noted between the level of qualification or the years of clinical experience and the knowledge about the causes and diagnosis of halitosis (p<0.05). The study revealed that dentists lack adequate knowledge regarding causes and diagnosis of halitosis especially for those with lesser years of clinical experience. An increase in knowledge levels could be achieved by emphasizing on this subject during professional training.

The role of Dental Surgeon in early oral cancer diagnosis

Most of the cases are diagnosed late, and the prognosis and survival improves considerably when the patient has an early diagnosis. In Brazil, the neoplasia still presents high levels of incidence and mortality, mainly affecting males sex. The oral cavity is an anatomical site that is easy to access for the examination and allows direct vision of the structures, which facilitates the identification of initial lesions, making possible the early diagnosis of oral pathological conditions. This paper describes a case of Epidermoid Carcinoma affecting the ventral of the tongue, classified as T2N0M0, in a male patient, feoderma , 57 years old, smoker and alcoholic. Etiological factors, clinical features and prognosis are discussed, as well as the role of the Dental Surgeon in the early diagnosis of oral cancer, suggesting the need for population education programs and professionals to identify early symptoms of the disease
