The Journal of orthopaedic and sports physical therapy, 2006
Co-Authors: A. Lynn Millar, Philip A. Jasheway, Wendy Eaton, Frances Christensen
    Abstract:

  • Maternal behaviors associated with smothering: a preliminary Descriptive Study.
    Child abuse & neglect, 2000
Co-Authors: Gwen Adshead, Deborah Brooke, Martin Samuels, S. U. E. Jenner, David P. Southall
    Abstract:

Abstract Objectives: To describe maternal behavior in 15 women identified as having smothered their children. Design: A Descriptive Study of maternal behavior and interaction with her child, using videotapes of mother and child together. These were obtained by covert video surveillance in a hospital setting. Maternal behavior was rated using an assessment schedule designed to be used with video. Results: The mothers showed a range of behaviors. Three groups emerged; one whose interaction with the child resembled normal maternal behavior, a second who interacted in a hostile way, and a third who showed a paucity of interaction. Conclusion: These preliminary data suggest that smothering may reflect more than one type of abnormal maternal relationship or attitude towards children. This may have implications for treatment and prognosis.

  • Self-reported practices among traditional birth attendants surveyed in western Kenya: a Descriptive Study.
    BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth, 2016
Co-Authors: Sherri Bucher, Olive Konana, Edward A. Liechty, Peter Gisore, Irene Marete, Constance Tenge, Evelyn Shipala, Ana Garces, Linda L. Wright, Fabian Esamai
    Abstract:

Background The high rate of home deliveries conducted by unskilled birth attendants in resource-limited settings is an important global health issue because it is believed to be a significant contributing factor to maternal and newborn mortality. Given the large number of deliveries that are managed by unskilled or traditional birth attendants outside of health facilities, and the fact that there is on-going discussion regarding the role of traditional birth attendants in the maternal newborn health (MNH) service continuum, we sought to ascertain the practices of traditional birth attendants in our catchment area. The findings of this Descriptive Study might help inform conversations regarding the roles that traditional birth attendants can play in maternal-newborn health care.
