  • development of a stand density management diagram for even aged pedunculate oak stands and its use in Designing thinning schedules
    Forestry, 2005
    Co-Authors: Barrio M Anta, J Alvarez G Gonzalez
    Abstract:

Summary Density management is the usual method used by silviculturists to achieve a desired future stand condition, and one of the most effective methods of Design, Display and evaluation of alternative density management regimes in even-aged stands is the use of stand density management diagrams. In the present study, we describe a method for developing thinning schedules for even-aged pedunculate oak ( Quercus robur L.) stands in Galicia (north-western Spain), using a density management diagram. The diagram integrates the relationships among stand density, dominant height, quadratic mean diameter and stand volume in a single graph. The data used in its construction were obtained from 172 sample plots located throughout Galicia. The diagram is basically composed of two equations: the fi rst relates the quadratic mean diameter to the stand density and dominant height; the second relates the stand volume to the quadratic mean diameter, stand density and dominant height. These equations were fi tted simultaneously using full information maximum likelihood. The relative spacing index is used to characterize the growing stock and the diagram provides isolines for dominant height, number of trees per hectare, quadratic mean diameter and stand volume. Dominant height isolines together with the site index curves allow specifi cation of the timing of thinnings while intermediate and fi nal harvest volumes are calculated using the stand volumes isolines.

  • Information security Display system based on Spatial Psychovisual Modulation
2014 IEEE International Conference on Multimedia and Expo (ICME), 2014
    Co-Authors: Chunjia Hu, Guangtao Zhai
    Abstract:

Privacy protection is of increasing importance in this era of information explosion. This paper introduces an information security Display system based on the idea of Spatial Psycho-visual Modulation (SPVM). With the rapid advance of modern manufacturing techniques, Display devices now support very high pixel density (e.g. the retina Display of Apple). Meanwhile the human visual system (HVS) cannot distinguish image signals with spatial frequency above a threshold, as predicted by the contrast sensitivity function (CSF). Therefore, it is now possible for us to devise a type of information security Display using the mismatch between resolutions of modern Display devices and the HVS. Given the desired visual stimuli for both the bystanders and the authorized users, we propose a method to Design Display signals accordingly. We select polarization as a way to effectively differentiate the bystanders and the authorized users. Operationally, applying complementary polarization to light emitted from different spatial sections of the Display could in itself be a challenge. Fortunately, the development of stereoscopic Display technologies has made available a lot of polarization based spatial multiplexing type of Display devices. Hardware of the information security Display system is based on a polarization based stereoscopic screen made by LG. Software of the information security Display system is written in C++ with SDKs of DirectX and etc. Kinect is also included into our system to enhance the experience of human-computer interaction. Extended experimental results will be given in this paper to justify the effectiveness and robustness of the system. The developed system serves both as a proof-of-concept of the SPVM method, as well as a test bed for future research of SPVM based Display technology.

  • Atomistic Simulations of COSAN: Amphiphiles without a Head‐and‐Tail Design Display “Head and Tail” Surfactant Behavior
Angewandte Chemie (International ed. in English), 2020
Co-Authors: David C. Malaspina, Clara Viñas, Francesc Teixidor, Jordi Faraudo
    Abstract:

Cobaltabisdicarbollide (COSAN) anions have an unexpectedly rich self-assembly behavior, which can lead to vesicles and micelles without having a classical surfactant molecular architecture. This was rationalized by the introduction of new terminology and novel driving forces. A key aspect in the interpretation of COSAN behavior is the assumption that the most stable form of these ions is the transoid rotamer, which lacks a "hydrophilic head" and a "hydrophobic tail". Using implicit solvent DFT calculations and MD simulations we show that in water, 1) the cisoid rotamer is the most stable form of COSAN and 2) this cisoid rotamer has a well-defined hydrophilic polar region ("head") and a hydrophobic apolar region ("tail"). In addition, our simulations show that the properties of this rotamer in water (interfacial affinity, micellization) match those expected for a classical surfactant. Therefore, we conclude that the experimental results for the COSAN ions can now be understood in terms of its amphiphilic molecular architecture.
