    Abstract:

    Road Design, Evaluation (analysis), and construction are closely connected processes in which Design and analysis are iterated to converge on the optimal solution. Many errors and delays frequently appear when data are exchanged between particular tasks; intertask connections are therefore of great importance for the quality of the final product. This article describes an integrated information system that is intended to support all important stages of the road life cycle: Design, Evaluation (through different analysis procedures), and construction. The concept of the system is object oriented. However, existing program packages are included to solve some common tasks. The system includes a conventional relational database as well as a spatial database with all relevant geographic information system (GIS) functionality. Since particular tasks often are executed at different places and by different companies, the interconnections are supported by a special metafile that contains all specific data about the project as it progresses toward the construction phase.

    Abstract:

    Abstract To achieve robust product Design with high accuracy and reliability, a digital twin (DT)–driven product Design Evaluation (PDE) method is presented in this chapter. First, a DT-driven PDE framework, which integrates various stages of product life cycle between virtual and physical spaces, is proposed. In the PDE framework, three complex networks are established: mapping network, prediction network, and feedback network. In order to embed the complex networks accurately in the framework, the PDE algorithms based on artificial neural network are introduced. Finally, a cased study of roll granulator Design Evaluation is presented to illustrate the application of the proposed PDE method.

    Design Evaluation and modification plays a critical role in the Design process to develop products that meet the user requirements. Physical prototypes are commonly used to evaluate a Design and justify Design changes. However, physical prototypes are costly and cannot be modified. Virtual prototypes have been used but it is difficult to simulate virtual prototypes accurately and contextualize them. In this paper, a gesture-based augmented reality Design Evaluation system (GARDE) is presented. Using AR, GARDE is able to enjoy the benefits of both physical and virtual prototyping in Design Evaluation. In addition, the use of hand gestures as the main interaction input allows for interactive and intuitive Design Evaluation. Through the use of an off-the-shelf CAD software API, modifications of the 3D models in an AR environment can be achieved. As Design Evaluation is conducted in a real environment, in-situ Design can also be performed using GARDE. Two case studies have been carried to demonstrate the GARDE system and are described in this paper.

    Abstract:

    Abstract The process of Design Evaluation is a complicated task for Designers due to the need to employ sufficient multi-disciplinary Design knowledge. To aid this task, the sharing, reuse and integration of multi-disciplinary knowledge between workers, who play different roles and perform different operations in the Design Evaluation process, is of great importance. Web services provide an appropriate means to transfer Design knowledge between individuals and teams in different disciplines, offering reductions in operation costs and enhanced efficiency, with a better, more streamlined service. This paper identifies and clarifies the knowledge needs required in the Design Evaluation process, models the knowledge flow among various organizations and the knowledge shared between them, and proposes a web services-based knowledge flow framework to enhance collaboration among various disciplinary experts. An illustrative case is presented to demonstrate how the proposed model may be used to represent Design knowledge and integrate it into the Design Evaluation process. Results from this study contribute significantly to efforts in fulfilling the diverse knowledge needs of workers in the Evaluation process. It also helps integrated Designers to obtain a clear view of knowledge flow during Design Evaluation and facilitates knowledge sharing, exchange and reuse among various organizations via a web service-based method.

    Abstract To realize the virtual Design and prototyping of every digital consumer product faithfully, it is important to allow all the people involved in the Design process to experience its realistic appearance and functional behaviour. Proposed in this paper is a novel approach to Design Evaluation of a digital consumer product, which can satisfy such requirements using virtual reality-based functional behaviour simulation. In the approach, a product model, multimedia contents data, a functional behaviour model and a finite state machine are combined to constitute the virtual product model of a product of interest. A state transition methodology is adopted to capture the functional behaviour of the product, which is simulated by the finite state machine in a virtual reality environment.
