Behavior tools based on data mining technology, such as Flurry and Google Analytics, is widely used in web-based applications to support quantitative user research. However, information visualization provided by those tools is usually adapted to business other than Design needs, which could be hardly used by Designers. In this paper, successful experience from CRM system is analyzed, relations between user behavior and pattern is studied according to Design factors. A prototype visualizing user data gathered from a social photo app is developed to integrate user behavior visualization into interaction Design Iteration process. User experiments are conducted to evaluate the prototype system. Results shown, interactive visualization on real-time user data could help to promote Design Iteration.

Designing for Relationality in Virtual Reality: Context-Specific Learning as a Primer for Content Relevancy

Boda, Bryan BrownAbstract:Science achievement gaps exhibit racial disparities starting in primary grades and have been shown to persist through middle and high school. In turn, increasing positive attitudes toward science have been shown as one factor that affects academic achievement and motivation among K-12 students. Exploring novel ways that technology can influence diverse students’ attitudes toward science, and the Design elements pertinent therein, is thus one prominent goal toward achieving science education for all. Leveraging the immersive nature of Virtual Reality 360 videos, we present a Design-based research Iteration testing how a novel technology-enhanced learning experience influenced close to 400 urban elementary students’ attitudes toward science. Using a two-way MANCOVA analysis, the data support that our Design Iteration emphasizing context-specific learning can prime students that do not see science as relevant to them to change these attitudes in significantly positive ways. Implications are discussed around relationality, technology use in urban schools, and local contexts as learning resources.

Shape optimization of heavy load carrying components for structural performance and manufacturing cost

ChangAbstract:This paper addresses the trade-off between structural performance and manufacturing cost of heavy load carrying components by incorporating virtual machining (VM) technique in computer-aided Design (CAD)-based shape optimization problem. A structural shape optimization problem is set up to minimize total cost, subject to the limits on structural performance measures. For every Design Iteration, finite element analysis (FEA) is conducted to evaluate structural performance, and VM is employed to ascertain machinability and estimate machining time. Design sensitivity coefficients of objective function and constraints are computed and supplied to the optimization algorithm. Based on the gradients, the algorithm determines Design changes, which are used to update FEA and VM models. The process is repeated until specified convergence criterion is satisfied. Application programs developed to integrate commercially available CAD/CAM/FEA/Design optimization tools enable implementation in virtual environment and facilitate automation. The application programs can be reused for similar Design problems provided that the same set of tools is used.

ALOHA: developing an interactive graph-based visualization for dietary supplement knowledge graph through user-centered Design

However, consumers know little about the safety and efficacy of DSs. There is a growing interest in accessing health information online; however, health information, especially online information on DSs, is scattered with varying levels of quality. In our previous work, we prototyped a web application, ALOHA, with interactive graph-based visualization to facilitate consumers’ browsing of the integrated DIetary Supplement Knowledge base (iDISK) curated from scientific resources, following an iterative user-centered Design (UCD) process. Methods Following UCD principles, we carried out two Design Iterations to enrich the functionalities of ALOHA and enhance its usability. For each Iteration, we conducted a usability assessment and Design session with a focus group of 8–10 participants and evaluated the usability with a modified System Usability Scale (SUS). Through thematic analysis, we summarized the identified usability issues and conducted a heuristic evaluation to map them to the Gerhardt-Powals’ cognitive engineering principles. We derived suggested improvements from each of the usability assessment session and enhanced ALOHA accordingly in the next Design Iteration. Results The SUS score in the second Design Iteration decreased to 52.2 ± 11.0 from 63.75 ± 7.2 in our original work, possibly due to the high number of new functionalities we introduced. By refining existing functionalities to make the user interface simpler, the SUS score increased to 64.4 ± 7.2 in the third Design Iteration. All participants agreed that such an application is urgently needed to address the gaps in how DS information is currently organized and consumed online. Moreover, most participants thought that the graph-based visualization in ALOHA is a creative and visually appealing format to obtain health information. Conclusions In this study, we improved a novel interactive visualization platform, ALOHA, for the general public to obtain DS-related information through two UCD Design Iterations. The lessons learned from the two Design Iterations could serve as a guide to further enhance ALOHA and the development of other knowledge graph-based applications. Our study also showed that graph-based interactive visualization is a novel and acceptable approach to end-users who are interested in seeking online health information of various domains.
