    Abstract:

    The introduction of new Design knowledge or Design resources in companies with little or no Design experience has been at the core of Design support programmes in different countries. Scholars investigated the use of Design and identified different Design and Design Management capabilities to deploy Design effectively in companies of all sizes. However, how Design and Design Management capability is built in SMEs with little or no prior Design experience is insufficiently investigated. Based on the absorptive capacity construct from the broader field of innovation studies, this paper proposes that the absorption of new Design knowledge or resources is an organisational learning and capability building process. It introduces a comprehensive Design Management absorption model that includes Design and Design Management capabilities that enable Design absorption in SMEs with little or no prior Design experience as well as indicators to measure the progress of absorption. The model allows for analysing the process companies go through when using Design as a strategic resource for the first time.

    Abstract:

    Two applied research projects undertaken in Central Switzerland aimed to introduce Design and Design Management into the strategy building and innovation processes of firms with little or no Design experience and-on a theoretical level-to introduce Design Management into a generic innovation Management model. Research with 11 variously-sized companies in a variety of industries revealed that many of the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) do not in innovation activities in a systematic and proactive way in order to understand market and customer needs. They also lack a Design Management function that would coordinate the processes of product and service development, brand Design, and communication to create a coherent market entry and customer experience for new products orengage services. Researchers explored the contribution of Design research, Design leadership, and Design Management to a generic innovation Management model, and developed a Design-driven innovation process model with six phases: impulse, research, development, strategy, implementation, and evolution.     AbstractOur experience in engineering education and practice indicates that methodologies for architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) Design Management are characterized only to a limited extent. In domains other than AEC such methodologies are well-established and contribute to improving Design performance. A step towards advancing AEC Design Management is to characterize Design practices and explore the methodologies on which they may be based. In this vein, the authors describe a Design practice observed while participating in the development of a Design-build-operate-and-maintain (DBOM) proposal for an infrastructure megaproject. The development team’s Design process followed a point-based methodology, i.e., early selection from a small set of Design alternatives.     Abstract:

    This paper describes a current-state practice observed for proposal development of a $500M Design-Build-Operate-and-Maintain (DBOM) infrastructure project in the public sector. The observed team‘s 4-month-long Design and estimating process revealed problems inherent in their current approach. With the team being a threeparty joint venture, integration and collaboration among Designers and engineers was difficult and infrequent, creating waste and rework. Based on this retrospective case study, this paper presents recommendations regarding improvements potentially achievable through implementation of lean concepts. Application of lean Design practices could have fostered better team collaboration by integrating the Design and estimating processes, and presumably achieved a more competitive proposal. Lean concepts discussed in this paper include Choosing by Advantages (CBA), set-based Design, cross functional teaming, colocation, and Target Value Design (TVD). By presenting a specific example of an infrastructure Design-Build (DB) project, this case study contributes to testing the hypothesis that lean Design Management can be beneficially applied to projects that do not immediately result in Design or constructed facilities, but instead end with the presentation of a competitive proposal.

    Abstract:

    The paper forwards the following hypotheses, which are new or previously little treated, in regard to Design Management: (1) There is an optimal sequence of Design tasks. (2) Internal and external uncertainties tend to push the Design process away from the optimal sequence. (3) Out-of-sequence Design process leads to low productivity, prolonged duration and decreased value of the Design solution. (4) It is possible and worthwhile to enforce (through measurements and managerial control) the realization of the optimal or near optimal sequence. These hypotheses are theoretically grounded and empirically justified through results from case studies and experimentations. Associated methods, like the Design Structure Matrix and the Last Planner, are presented.

    Abstract Project team members in Design–build system, including owner’s representatives, Design–build (D/B) contractors and architects/engineers, have to adopt new roles in managing the Design of large-scale projects. The Design responsibility is transferred from the owner’s organization to the D/B contractor who is responsible for the Design Management in the projects to be delivered by the Design–build procurement system. However, there remains the concern of Design Management between the Designer and the constructor within the D/B organization, or between the joint venture parties of a D/B project. This paper presents a study, which reviews the issues concerning the Design liability and contractual provisions for Design Management between the Designer and D/B contractor in the said contractual arrangements of Design–build system. It disseminates the results of a questionnaire survey and structured interviews of three groups of project participants: owners, Designers and D/B contractors. The roles and responsibilities of the parties involved in Design and Design Management are less than clear in their respective engagement contracts. In order to improve the Design Management of Design–build projects, this paper recommended some strategic items to be considered in drafting contracts between owners/D/B contractors, D/B contractors/Designers and owners/independent checkers to address the issues.

    Abstract:

    It is characteristic of engineering Design that precedence relationships among the constituent Design tasks contain information flow conflicts. The existence of these conflicts with the lack of formal methods to manage them render the development cycle time unpredictable. This paper discusses a qualitative approach to engineering Design Management from an information structure perspective. The objective is to model, analyse and manage the interactions manifested by the information exchanges within the Design process. We introduce the notion of Structural Sensitivity Analysis (SSA), which is devised based on two measures of information dependency among Design tasks: Sensitivity and Variability. Those two measures of dependency enhance the classical Design structure matrix method and allow for more complex analysis to be performed.

    Simulation modelling has been introduced as a decision support tool for front end planning and Design analysis of projects. An integrated approach has been discussed linking project scope, end product or project facility performance and the strategic project objectives at the early stage of projects. The case study example on tram network demonstrates that application of simulation helps assessing performance of project operation and making appropriate investment decisions over life cycle of project. Optimised Design and maintenance of physical project facilities in competitive business environment triggers the strategic positioning of the project organisations over life cycle of the project. The preliminary research has identified the key roots of inefficient operations in terms of the capabilities and utilisation of the project facilities and resources and contributed in devising optimal solutions based on life cycle objective functions of the project. The framework assists organisations in their Management decisions in respond to market dynamics, customer needs and organisational intents. In developing the prototype, the process simulation approach has been used in the projects. The simulation based framework facilitates evaluating the functionality and operability of feasible project configuration for strategic implementation. Research by the author reveals that there has been little attempt to assess the link between the physical project\u27s facility and the underlying business capability and ability to respond to market shifts in contemporary project Management practices. The concept presented in this research has taken into consideration multiple views of project facility within a business operating environment. Process reengineering or investment decision on the existing facility depends on the target LCOFs of the project. Analysis of alternative project solutions (based on alternative process scope and configuration) rather than focusing on well Designed activities for project implementation has significant contribution in supporting decision making and Management of future project outcomes. While for Design visualisation, the simulation modelling is immensely valued, project selection and overall investment decisions are holistically evaluated incorporating strategic business objectives in the cycle project model. The simulation based framework put forward provides the engineering assistance in optimizing project\u27s configuration, planning and Design and investment decision on capital projects. The ability for quick exploration of the multiple scenarios of significant benefits and the capability incorporating results on Design and engineering processes in devising the best possible solution on complex projects are the significant contributions in this chapter

    Purpose – The purpose of the paper is to put forward a research‐based argument on the benefits of simulation approach in managing Design at an early stage of a project. Having selected an optimal Design configuration, the operational uncertainties can be removed and investment decisions are fully justified over the lifecycle of projects.Design/methodology/approach – A simulation‐based methodology embodying balanced scorecard (BSC) for measuring the operational and business performance has been synthesised in the research. Multi‐criteria decision analysis (MCDA) has been employed to evaluate the trade‐offs between feasible Design alternatives and to select the optimum Design configuration.Findings – The findings show that the integrated framework developed in this research by integrating simulation technology, BSC and MCDA adds significant contributions in improving the current body of knowledge in the Design Management practices.Research limitations/implications – The framework should further be tested by...
