    Abstract:

    Design Research faces a critical 'impact gap' where the potential for scientific and practical impact is yet to be fully realised. A key means of bridging this gap is the adoption of fundamental theory from other fields to support clarification and synergy in Design Research. In this paper we examine one of the main candidates for adoption: dual-process theory of cognition. Cognition forms a common element across much of the Design literature and leads to fundamental dual-process theories of reasoning. While dual-process theory has started to be recognised in Design Research, its widespread recognition and potential utility have not been widely explored. Following a conceptual theory development approach we identify and logically describe interactions between dual-process theory and Design Research. We conclude the paper with a proposition of a Design Research framework with a core rooted in dual-process theory, and based on this, an agenda for theory-driven Design Research. This contributes to the debate on how to improve impact, and theoretical and scientific rigour in Design Research, and provides a concrete agenda for discussion and development within the community.

    Abstract:

    Design Research is increasingly weak in comparison with other fields; without action to increase scientific, theoretical, and methodological rigour there is a real possibility of the field being superseded and becoming obsolete through lack of impact. The aim of this paper is to show how Design Research could become more rigorous, relevant and have greater impact. I conduct a two-part review that combines systematic and critical components. Part one characterises the major scientific challenges facing Design Research, and part two examines how such challenges have been addressed in related fields. I identify key learning indicating future directions for theory-driven Design Research. I conclude by providing some concrete recommendations for the field of Design Research and individual Design Researchers.

    Abstract:

    Design Research brings together influences from the whole gamut of social, psychological, and more technical sciences to create a tradition of empirical study stretching back over 50 years (Horvath 2004; Cross 2007). A growing part of this empirical tradition is experimental, which has gained in importance as the field has matured. As in other evolving disciplines, e.g. behavioural psychology, this maturation brings with it ever-greater scientific and methodological demands (Reiser 1939; Dorst 2008). In particular, the experimental paradigm holds distinct and significant challenges for the modern Design Researcher. Thus, this book brings together leading Researchers from across Design Research in order to provide the reader with a foundation in experimental Design Research; an appreciation of possible experimental perspectives; and insight into how experiments can be used to build robust and significant scientific knowledge. This chapter sets the stage for these discussions by introducing experimental Design Research, outlining the various types of experimental approach, and explaining the role of this book in the wider methodological context.

  • E-government Design Research: Towards the policy-ingrained IT artifact

    This paper investigates whether Design Research in e-government should be conducted in some special way compared with standard models for Design Research. It reviews literature in e-government and Design Research in order to generate an answer to this Research question. The result of this review affirms that the policy character of e-government should determine the way that such Design Research is conducted. A tentative e-government Design Research model, consisting of different activities is formulated. This model consists of the following activities: theorizing, policy analysis, workpractice analysis, co-Design and co-evaluation of IT artifact and workpractice. Three specific e-government Design Research principles are formulated: The policy principle, the co-Design principle and the theorizing principle. One important result from this paper is the formulation of the concept of the policy-ingrained artifact as an important empirical outcome from e-government Design Research. A Design Research case study on social welfare allowances has been used for the generation as well as the validation of the proposed e-government Design Research model.

    There has been a growing interest in the philosophy and constituents of Design Research by a vast amount of IS-scholars There are several unresolved concerns and issues in Design Research (DR) Some examples are the outcomes of Design Research, the role of theorizing in DR, how to conduct evaluation and validation, and the need for different grounding processes to generate valid knowledge from Design Research endeavors This paper describes a multi-grounded approach for Design Research; consisting of three types of grounding processes (theoretical, empirical and internal grounding) The purpose is to investigate DR-based Design knowledge and its roles during Design Research and Design practice A key feature in this approach is the division between the meta-Design (within Design Research) producing abstract Design knowledge and the empirical Design practice producing situational knowledge and artefacts The multi-grounding approach to Design Research will be illustrated by the support of two Design cases.

    Educational Design Research is a genre of Research in which the iterative development of solutions to practical and complex educational problems provides the setting for scientific inquiry. The solutions can be educational products, processes, programs, or policies. Educational Design Research not only targets solving significant problems facing educational practitioners but at the same time seeks to discover new knowledge that can inform the work of others facing similar problems. Working systematically and simultaneously toward these dual goals is perhaps the most defining feature of educational Design Research. This chapter seeks to clarify the nature of educational Design Research by distinguishing it from other types of inquiry conducted in the field of educational communications and technology. Examples of Design Research conducted by different Researchers working in the field of educational communications and technology are described. The chapter concludes with a discussion of several important issues facing educational Design Researchers as they pursue future work using this innovative Research approach.

    Educational Design Research blends scientific investigation with systematic development and implementation of solutions to educational problems. Empirical investigation is conducted in real learning settings-not laboratories-to craft usable and effective solutions. At the same time, the Research is carefully structured to produce theoretical understanding that can serve the work of others. To support graduate students as well as experienced Researchers who are new to this approach, Conducting Educational Design Research integrates multiple perspectives of educational Design Research throughout this three-part book. Part one clarifies the educational Design Research origins, approach and outcomes. It also presents a generic model portraying the overall process. Part two discusses the constituent elements of the model in detail, these are: analysis and exploration; Design and construction; evaluation and reflection; and implementation and spread. Part three offers recommendations for proposing, reporting and advancing educational Design Research.     This event is primarily intended for doctoral students unfamiliar with this the unique Design Research approach to educational inquiry. The emphasis will be less on the theoretical aspects of this approach and more on the "nuts and bolts" of how it can be done by doctoral students, their supervisors, and other educational Researchers. Several actual examples of Design Research conducted by Jan and Susan when they were doctoral students as well as by the doctoral students all three workshop presenters have supervised will be shared. This workshop is intended for all fields of inquiry in education, not just educational technology. In addition, educators from other disciplines such as public health, social work, etc. should find value in attending this workshop.

    The call for Design Research, Design-based Research, or Design experiments arose from the recognition of the complexity of classroom interventions and dissatisfaction with existing methodologies for exploring the outcomes from such interventions. The goal of the proposed Design Research was to describe how interventions worked and was less about documenting that they worked. The concerns voiced are not new, and the emergence of proposals for alternatives was a natural outgrowth of trends in the field of educational psychology. Advances are only beginning to be made in the articulation of a Design Research methodology, and some of the criticism and recommendations for progress are described. The articles in this issue provide examples of Design Research and point to some issues that still require attention. Among these are the need to clarify the nature of Design Research and the role of context in such Research.
