    V diplomové práci je prezentováno konstrukční řešení zakladače SMC (Schäfer Miniload Crane), jehož hnací člen bude umístěn symetricky vůči blokům vodících kladek, tj. v ose kolejnice.     The MAX IV 3 GeV storage ring, currently under construction, pursues the goal of low electron beam emittance by using a multi-bend achromat magnet lattice, which is realised by having several consecutive magnet elements precision-machined out of a common solid iron block, 2.3–3.4 m long. With this magnet Design Solution, instead of having 1320 individual magnets, the MAX IV 3 GeV storage ring is built up using 140 integrated `magnet block' units, containing all these magnet elements. Major features of this magnet block Design are compactness, vibration stability and that the alignment of magnet elements within each unit is given by the mechanical accuracy of the CNC machining rather than individual field measurement and adjustment. This article presents practical engineering details of implementing this magnet Design Solution, and mechanical + magnetic field measurement results from the magnet production series. At the time of writing (spring 2014), the production series, which is totally outsourced to industry, is roughly half way through, with mechanical/magnetic QA conforming to specifications. It is the conclusion of the authors that the MAX IV magnet block concept, which has sometimes been described as new or innovative, is from a manufacturing point of view simply a collection of known mature production methods and measurement procedures, which can be executed at fixed cost with a low level of risk.

    Abstract Wind is one of the most compelling forms of indirect solar energy. Available now, the conversion of wind power into electricity is and will continue to be an important element of energy self-sufficiency planning. This paper is one in a series intended to report on the development of a new type of generator for wind energy; a compact, high-power, direct-drive permanent magnet synchronous generator (DD-PMSG) that uses direct liquid cooling (LC) of the stator windings to manage Joule heating losses. The main parameters of the subject LC DD-PMSG are 8 MW, 3.3 kV, and 11 Hz. The stator winding is cooled directly by deionized water, which flows through the continuous hollow conductor of each stator tooth-coil winding. The Design of the machine is to a large degree subordinate to the use of these solid-copper tooth-coils. Both steady-state and time-dependent temperature distributions for LC DD-PMSG were examined with calculations based on a lumped-parameter thermal model, which makes it possible to account for uneven heat loss distribution in the stator conductors and the conductor cooling system. Transient calculations reveal the copper winding temperature distribution for an example duty cycle during variable-speed wind turbine operation. The cooling performance of the liquid cooled tooth-coil Design was predicted via finite element analysis. An instrumented cooling loop featuring a pair of LC tooth-coils embedded in a lamination stack was built and laboratory tested to verify the analytical model. Predicted and measured results were in agreement, confirming the predicted satisfactory operation of the LC DD-PMSG cooling technology approach as a whole.

    Sustainable communities are seen as offering the opportunity to manage growth in plan-led and environmentally-friendly patterns of settlement. This paper examines the settlement model put forward for the development of sustainable communities in the South East Wedge of Edinburgh. It suggests that while the growth management strategy is clearly plan-led, the degree to which the Design Solution can be said to be environmentally-friendly is questionable. The paper goes on to suggest this is because the settlement model put forward for the development of urban villages and neighbourhoods – as sustainable communities - in Edinburgh’s South East Wedge, is unable to say whether the Design Solution advanced is ecologically sound. Whether, in particular, the Solution advanced in Edinburgh is ecologically sound and because of this, not only efficient in greening economic development, but in also making it financially viable for the South East Wedge to produce environmentally-friendly patterns of settlement.

This paper examines the settlement model put forward for the development of sustainable communities in the United Kingdom and shows that while in Scotland, the growth management strategy is clearly plan-led, the degree to which the Design Solution can be seen to be environmentally friendly is questionable. The paper suggests this is because in its current form, the model is not able to show whether the Design Solution advanced is ecologically sound. Whether, in particular, the Solution is ecologically sound and because of this, not only efficient in greening economic development, but in also making it financially viable for plan-led experiments of this kind to produce environmentally friendly patterns of settlement.
