    Abstract:

    Existing models of intelligent Design System nowadays are generally logic-based, which solve only simple and small-scale Design problems. In the author's opinion, these models which concentrate only on far-fetched use of logical inference and abstract knowledge deviate from Designer's thinking and decision process; the crux of the deviation is the lack of imitating thinking with mental imagery ability. Considering the nature of Design problems and imitating rational thinking with alternate use of pattern association and symbolic operation, a new intelligent Design System (IDS) model and its implementation techniques are presented. Imitation of thinking with mental imagery which is also called pattern association in the IDS model is considered by applying artificial neural network (ANN) techniques. The pattern association in the IDS model imitates the rule of human thinking, "comprehending by analogy", to some extent. Because of the robustness of the pattern-type knowledge used in pattern association, IDS provides a practical way in producing a Design scheme using incomplete and/or undeterminate input data, which is very difficult to achieve in general expert Design Systems. According to the IDS model, an intelligent structural layout Design System of wing (ISDW) is developed. ISDW realizes mapping from key parameters of Design requirements and the environment of the wing to the layout Design of wing structure in not only graphic form, but also in readable data form. After getting a layout of wing structure, the user will modify it interactively by Auto-CAD, and then return to the ISDW environment to produce FEM meshes by an intelligent meshing interface in order to do the preliminary static and dynamic structural analysis. The Design schemes created by the System proved to be proper and usable, and this concludes that IDS model is practicable and practical. Copyright © 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.

    The intention of application of SVG in the Design System of garment was to promulgate the garment Design System in the network more adaptive.That how to change the format between graphics and image by using SVG and how to express,store and realize net-based management of the garment style data were studied.It shows that SVG has the characteristics of scaleable,interaction and fusion with existing technique,and basing on XML and opening standard.This is an innovated idea and it has far reaching importance for development of garment industry in China.

    Abstract Fixture Design is a complex and an intuitive process. An efficient fixture Design System is essential to cut costs and reduce the product lead-time. In today's manufacturing landscape, various computer-aided Systems exist to aid the various stages of manufacturing. A fixture Design System should be able to transfer information with the various other Systems to bring about a seamless product Design and manufacturing environment. A fixture Design System should also be portable on different operating platforms. This paper addresses the development of an Internet-enabled interactive fixture Design System. The Internet and the use of XML as a file format provide a means for the transfer of information and knowledge between the various computer-aided manufacturing Systems. The System has been implemented using Java and is based on a three-tier Thin Client–Fat Server architecture. This ensures the platform independent performance of the System. A locating scheme independent interactive fixture Design method has also been developed in this work for detailed fixture Design.

    Abstract In the bridging of CAD and CAM activities in flexible manufacturing Systems, the development of an automated fixture-Design System capable of handling various part geometries is a pertinent link. The paper discusses the Design task relating to the development and implementation of an automated fixture-Design System. An automated fixture-Design System requires an intelligent feature recognizer, a sophisticated Design System, a good knowledge-representation scheme, and sound interfacing of these modules. A CAD model is used as an input to the System. A feature recognizer is developed to recognize the machining features represented in the CAD model. A rule/object-based approach is used to group the machining features into appropriate fixture setups, and to recommend suitable clamping, locating and supporting points. The appropriate fixturing elements are then selected and assembly sequences are planned. Relevant fixturing constraints and the representation of the Design knowledge in the System are also discussed.

    How to use various kinds of intelligent technology to find an optimal product Design scheme is very important in today's highly competitive marketplace. Based on the analyzing and summarizing of current intelligent Design methods, an optimization Design System with hybrid intelligence, which integrates human intelligence with machine intelligence was explored. Intelligent tools such as genetic algorithm (GA) and case-based reasoning (CBR), were used to find a feasible and optimal solution quickly in a large Design space. The way to combine the Designer's intelligence during the whole automatic optimization searching process was described. The optimization Design System not only integrates the intelligence of Design examples, experts, Designers and computer, but also supports the Designers to utilize all the knowledge resources to Design. Finally, a case study is used to specify the implementation procedure of this method.
