Design of vessels, surface finishes, materials of construction, types and locations of valves are some of the considerations addressed. Requisite levels of turbulence for cleaning of pipes and vessels are discussed as well as typical cleaning sequences. Recommendations for Validation of cleaning are presented and the significance of Design of cleaning systems in ensuring satisfactory Validation is pointed out. To the extent possible, Validation of cleaning should be carried out with real process soil or soil closely simulating actual fermentation broths.

    Abstract This paper reports a return-on-investment (ROI) case study of the use of building information modeling (BIM) in “Design Validation” based on the avoidance costs of rework due to Design errors. The ROI was analyzed using the 709 individual Design errors found during the BIM Design Validation of the six high- and medium-rise buildings in the D3 City project in Seoul, Korea. Each Design error was categorized according to its cause and the likelihood of detecting it before construction. The likelihood of detecting errors in the ROI analysis made a large difference of a factor of four to fifteen. An additional analysis on the potential impact of Design errors on the schedule shows that costs associated with schedule delays has a much larger economic impact than rework costs.

    Information systems become ubiquitous. This opens a large spectrum of possibilities for end-users, but the Design complexity is increasing. So domain specific languages are proposed sometimes supported by appropriate processes. These proposals are interesting but they are under-validated. Even if Validation is a difficult task, which requires specific knowledge, we argue that Validation should be systematic. But many problems remain to be considered to achieve this goal: 1) computer scientists are often not trained to evaluation; 2) the domain of information systems Design Validation and evaluation is still under construction. To cope with the first problem, we propose to capitalize evaluation practices into patterns so that they can be reusable for non-specialists of Validation practices. For the second issue, we propose an environment where evaluation specialists and engineering methods specialists can work together to define their common and reusable patterns.

    Abstract Waste generated in construction and demolition processes comprised around 50% of the solid waste in South Korea in 2013. Many cases show that Design Validation based on building information modeling (BIM) is an effective means to reduce the amount of construction waste since construction waste is mainly generated due to improper Design and unexpected changes in the Design and construction phases. However, the amount of construction waste that could be avoided by adopting BIM-based Design Validation has been unknown. This paper aims to estimate the amount of construction waste prevented by a BIM-based Design Validation process based on the amount of construction waste that might be generated due to Design errors. Two project cases in South Korea were studied in this paper, with 381 and 136 Design errors detected, respectively during the BIM-based Design Validation. Each Design error was categorized according to its cause and the likelihood of detection before construction. The case studies show that BIM-based Design Validation could prevent 4.3–15.2% of construction waste that might have been generated without using BIM.
