  • Bold iDeas. French liberal economists and the state: Say to Leroy-Beaulieu
The European Journal of the History of Economic Thought, 2010
    Co-Authors: Gilbert Faccarello
    Abstract:

In 19th-century France, the nature and functions of the State were an almost constant subject of Debate among liberal economists. The aim of this paper is to analyse and restate some hitherto neglected discussions and to discover some bold iDeas that could form the hallmarks of a French approach to the question. The enquiry starts at the turn of the century with the seminal work of J.-B. Say and writings by A. L. C. Destutt De Tracy, who both shaped the liberal reflection on public economics during this period. But the works of these authors suffered from important ambiguities. It is shown how subsequent liberal economists -- Ch. Dunoyer, V. De Broglie, G. De Molinari, E. De Girardin, P. Leroy-Beaulieu -- tried to Deal with some of the unresolved questions and, mainly on the basis of Say's work, Developed original approaches focusing on the productivity of public spending, the role of the State as a factor of production, utopian views of the State as a private company, and finally the inexorable political and administrative logic of the moDern electoral State.

    Co-Authors: Carlos R. Luis
    Abstract:

  • Cuando pensar era sentir: una mirada a la Gramática De Destutt De Tracy When Thinking Was Feeling: A Look at Destutt De Tracy's Grammaire
    2010
    Co-Authors: Carlos R. Luis
    Abstract:

What is the purpose of writing a grammar in the sensualist tradition? For Condillac and Destutt De Tracy, their grammars were part of their reflections on a theory of iDeas. Destutt De Tracy even creates a discipline which he calls iDeologie (iDeology). Unlike those grammars that unDerstand language as a means to translate existing iDeas, sensualism and iDeologie consiDer the elements of language to be signs of iDeas that originate in sensations, in what is caught from the outsiDe world and transformed by the senses. This view involves new categorisations of the speech continuum and a different approach to signs, the necessary elements for iDeas to be stored in memory and conveyed. Thus, signs make thought possible. Like sensualism, iDeologie is genetic, as it does not stem from a reflection of ready-maDe thought to account for iDeas and language but has its origin in the process whereby men, left to rely on their own faculties and driven by need, invented signs.

  • Valeur et travail chez Destutt De Tracy
    Cahiers d Économie Politique, 2013
    Co-Authors: Jean Magnan De Bornier
    Abstract:

  • Destutt De Tracy on labor and value
    2013
    Co-Authors: Jean Magnan De Bornier
    Abstract:

Destutt De Tracy’s value theory is examined here in its relations to labor. This theory is original in that it has two concepts of value, one being natural, the other, conventional. Both are linked to labor, Deemed to be any productive activity and the sole origin of any production, but in two quite different ways. This twovalue theory leads to contradictions, is but one example of a general proposition of iDeology, that social conventions have their origin in the inner constitution of man.

    2014
    Co-Authors: Robert J. Richards
    Abstract:

Antoine Destutt De Tracy, who coined the term "iDeology, " consiDered his new discipline a general science of our "intellectual faculties, their principal phenomena, and the more remarkable circumstances of their activities " (1801, p. 4). Convinced of the sensationalist epistemology of Locke and Condillac, Destutt De Tracy believed one could resolve all iDeas into the sensations that produced them and thereby test their soundness. The sensationalist assumptions of his project led him to propose that "iDeology is a part of zoology " (1801, p. 1), and he consequently paid close attention to the way physiological circumstance shaped and often misshaped iDeas. Though Karl Marx appropriated this concept of iDeology, he explored not physiological but cultural Determinants. He concerned himself with the way material and economic conditions influenced iDeas, especially when they produced a false consciousness of the supposed reality to which they referred. Marx believed his principles of analysis would allow him to distinguish sound iDeas from those tainted by particular circumstance. The concept of iDeology from its beginning has thus DepenDed upon the presumption that some iDeas can escape the kind of distortion from which others suffer. During our century, the concept of iDeology has speciated. In the social sciences and humanities, it has come to be applied with a variety of different assumptions and meanings. 1 Historians and philosophers of science, however, have usually sustained the original presumption that a clear distinction can be maDe between true or at least 'rationally sound' and false iDeas. Karl Popper, for instance, conceives iDeology as a pseudo-scientific system like psychoanalysis or, for that matter, Marxism that pretends to science but essentially lacks the requisite rational methodology. For Popper, of course, the rational method of science, by which it can be distinguished from its iDeological counterfeit, is falsificationism. The uncritical and stubborn adherence to a position, protecting it from confuting eviDence by Developing ad hoc hypotheses, clearly indicates an iDeological conception. It is in this Viennese vein that Georges Canguilhem (1988), mentor of Foucault, Defined a scientific iDeology:

    2020
    Co-Authors: Zollna Isabel
    Abstract:

At the end of the 18thcentury and the beginning of the 19thc. the question of an iDeal, logical language is consiDered impossible and even unDesirable by Destutt De Tracy. Nonetheless in his Grammaire, the 2ndvol. of the Idéologie (1801-1815), Destutt De Tracy treats the question seriously in the perspective to resume and systematize the principals and the basic structures of language in general exposed in his Grammaire. The chapter on an iDeal language permits him to prove his grammatical theory and serves him at the same time as a language critique that focuses on redundancies and ambiguities of natural languages which are to avoid
