  • clathrate phase equilibria for the water Deuterium oxide carbon dioxide and water Deuterium oxide chlorodifluoromethane r22 systems
Journal of Chemical & Engineering Data, 1996
    Co-Authors: Moonkyoon Chun, Ji-ho Yoon
    Abstract:

Clathrate phase equilibria for two ternary water + Deuterium oxide + carbon dioxide and water + Deuterium oxide + chlorodifluoromethane (R22) systems were measured at several different mass % of water and Deuterium oxide mixtures. Equilibrium dissociation pressures of these two ternary systems at the three-phase (clathrate−liquid−vapor) boundaries range (1.43 to 4.86) MPa and (0.141 to 0.886) MPa, respectively. The temperature range occupied by the three-phase boundary of the water + Deuterium oxide + R22 system is a little larger than that of the water + Deuterium oxide + carbon dioxide system. The dissociation pressures at the quadruple points were found to steadily increase with Deuterium oxide composition.

  • Deuterium content of water increases depression susceptibility the potential role of a serotonin related mechanism
    Behavioural Brain Research, 2015
Co-Authors: Tatyana Strekalova, Matthew R Evans, Anton Chernopiatko, Yvonne Couch, Joao Costanunes, Raymond Cespuglio, Lesley A Chesson, Julie Vignisse, Harry W M Steinbusch, Daniel C Anthony
    Abstract:

Hippocampus Sleep Citalopram Mice Q3 a b s t r a c t Environmental factors can significantly affect disease prevalence, including neuropsychiatric disorders such as depression. The ratio of Deuterium to protium in water shows substantial geographical variation, which could affect disease susceptibility. Thus the link between Deuterium content of water and depression was investigated, both epidemiologically, and in a mouse model of chronic mild stress. We performed a correlation analysis between Deuterium content of tap water and rates of depression in regions of the USA. Next, we used a 10-day chronic stress paradigm to test whether 2-week Deuterium-depleted water treatment (91 ppm) affects depressive-like behavior and hippocampal structure. The effect of Deuteriumdepletion on sleep electrophysiology was also evaluated in naive mice. There was a geographic correlation between a content of Deuterium and the prevalence of depression across the USA. In the chronic stress model, depressive-like features were reduced in mice fed with Deuterium-depleted water, and SERT expression was decreased in mice treated with Deuterium-treated water compared with regular water. Five days of predator stress also suppressed proliferation in the dentate gyrus; this effect was attenuated in mice fed with Deuterium-depleted water. Finally, in naive mice, Deuterium-depleted water treatment increased EEG indices of wakefulness, and decreased duration of REM sleep, phenomena that have been shown to result from the administration of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI). Our data suggest that the Deuterium content of water may influence the incidence of affective disorder-related pathophysiology and major depression, which might be mediated by the serotoninergic mechanisms. © 2014 Published by Elsevier B.V.

  • electron spin echo modulation study of sodium dodecyl sulfate and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide micellar solutions in the presence of urea evidence for urea interaction at the micellar surface
The Journal of Physical Chemistry, 1990
Co-Authors: Piero Baglioni, E Ferroni, Larry Kevan
    Abstract:

Electron spin echo studies have been carried out for a series of x-doxylstearic acid (x-DSA, x = 5,7,10,12,16) and 4-octanoyl-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxy (C{sub 8}-TEMPO) spin probes in micellar solutions of anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and cationic dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) in D{sub 2}O and in the presence of 2 or 6 M urea or urea-d{sub 4}. Modulation effects due to the interaction of the unpaired electron with urea and water Deuteriums show that urea does not affect the bent conformation of the x-DSA probe in the micelle. The analysis of the Deuterium modulation depth and the Fourier transformation of the two-pulse electron spin echo spectra show that urea interacts with the surfactant polar headgroups at the micelle surface. These results support recent molecular dynamics and Monte Carlo calculations of micellar systems and are in agreement with direct interaction of urea at micellar surfaces in which it replaces some water molecules in the surface region.
