A Prototype Development Framework for Hybrid Control System Design

FlemingAbstract:Abstract Hybrid control systems are a combination of real-time control law and discrete-state logic. This paper describes how a Development Framework for control systems software has been adapted so that it may also handle discrete events such as mode switching. The Framework provides a highly automated path from a control engineering specification to a distributed system implementation. Simulink, an extension to Matlab, is used to specify control laws, and a statecharts tool, Statemate, is used to specify and model discrete-state components. The design phase of the Development Framework supports the integration of the two sets of specification. An inverted pendulum control system is introduced as a simple example of a hybrid system implemented using the Framework. The translation of statecharts to dataflow notations is described for the example system. General translation rules are also presented.

The demonstration will illustrate the Development Framework design approach using a primary flight control Case Study. The example application consists of a three channel autopilot and airframe model. Dependability models of competing autopilot architectures will be contrasted in the demonstration.

Development Framework approach to heterogeneous system design for control systems

FlemingAbstract:Abstract An integrated environment of software Development tools, known as the Development Framework, which automates the design process for complex real-time embedded control systems, is introduced. The approach favoured here is to maximise the use of commercially available tools that are well understood by current industrial practitioners. Where necessary, new tools are introduced both in unifying the automated method and for supporting specialist functions. Introduced here is one such specialist example: support for the design of heterogeneous systems. This paper details the work on heterogeneity, and demonstrates how the essential properties of the Development Framework have been preserved. Thus, the Framework presents a unified methodology and an open system architecture. Finally, what should be learnt from this for building future techniques and tools for complex real-time control systems is discussed.

FlemingAbstract:This paper describes work in progress on two extensions to the environment of a Development Framework for the design of control system software; hybrid system design and design of dependable systems. The Development Framework automatically converts a control engineering specification into a parallel implementation. Hybrid control systems are a combination of real-time control law and discrete-state logic. The Framework can be adapted so that it may handle discrete events such as mode switching. A statechart tool, Statemate [i-Logix95], is used to specify and model discrete-state components. The design phase of the Development Framework supports the integration of the two sets of specification. Initial work to support the design of dependable systems has included the implementation of an interface between the Framework design model and the dependability modelling tool, SURF-2. Stochastic Petri net models of selected fault-tolerant mechanisms are currently supported. The models enable sensitivity analysis and comparison of competing architectures.

This tool is designed to support an evaluation based design approach. Multiple design solutions can be compared to assess the implications of design decisions on the dependability of the system under Development. The software demonstration will show how the interface between the Development Framework and SURF-2 is used to model the inclusion of selected fault tolerant mechanisms in the system under Development. >

The research is quantitative in nature and purposive sampling was used at the villages and government departments responsible for tourism and the environment in the ThatheVondo area. This was to get the relevant participants with relevant information. A sustainable adventure tourism Development Framework was proposed towards positioning ThatheVondo in the adventure market, towards developing adventure activities, improving standards of living for the communities, and to enable the area to have an advantage over its competitors while being sustainable.
