  • Investor Reactions to New Product Development Failures The Moderating Role of Product Development Stage

    Abstract:

    The authors develop a model of investor reactions to new product Development (NPD) failures in high technology firms. They propose that a firm’s financial and managerial capabilities, and its strategic focus on R&D, influence investors’ perceptions of the firm’s market value after NPD failure and that these effects are contingent on the Development Stage of the failed product. Using data on 148 NPD failures of publicly traded biopharmaceutical firms and an event study methodology the authors find support for their hypotheses. They show that the relationships between a firm’s (a) financial capabilities, (b) managerial capabilities, and (c) strategic focus on R&D, respectively, and the decline of firm market value after NPD failure are more negative for products that fail in late Development Stages than for products that fail in early Development Stages.     Abstract:

    In this paper, we explore the early indicators of design fixation occurring during the concept Development Stage of children’s design processes. This type of fixation, which we named: concept fixation , causes a blind adherence to the current (possibly unfavourable) state of a design idea. Its occurrence hampers the creative thinking processes present in a design process, which in turn stagnates the Development of initial design ideas into final designs. Until now, research on design fixation has mainly focussed on creative idea generation in the early phases of the design process through analysing (intermediate) design ideas and completed artefacts. However, children’s fixation behaviours might be identified at an earlier moment through the conversations that take place in the classroom about their design ideas. To this end, we present a case study in which we explored early indicators of concept fixation of a group of 24 primary school children (ages 9–11) carrying out a co-design project. Fixation was observed through the manner in which the design teams responded to questions and comments from their peers and the client. Four categories of response behaviours indicating concept fixation emerged from the verbal data, namely: ‘band-aids’, ‘already-in-there’, ‘question-not-relevant’ and ‘it’s-not-possible’. We expect that the indicators will be helpful in identifying concept fixation during the design process, especially in an educational context. The process of identification of fixation, and reflecting on it, creates awareness. This is considered as an important step by professional designers towards guarding oneself from fixation episodes in future projects, and thus being more creative.

    Abstract The fierce global competition in the international markets forces manufacturers to compete in quality, cost, and the time to market aspects of their products. Knowing the cost of the manufactured components is essential for efficient operation and competitive production. The current evolution of competitive manufacturing requires a shorter market life span of products—emphasizing the design and Development phase of the product life cycle. Thus, it has become more important to analyze the cost of the design and Development phase accurately. Activity-based costing (ABC) has become a mature cost estimation and accounting methodology. Using ABC for cost estimation of manufactured parts is being practiced today with acceptable rate of success. Cost estimation of the design activity on the other hand, has been nebulous and hard to implement. This paper presents a methodology of using ABC to evaluate the cost of the design and Development activity for machined parts. The methodology is demonstrated on a sample part being produced in a controlled manufacturing facility.

    Insect age estimates can be useful for estimating the postmortem interval when certain assumptions are met. Such estimates are based on species-specific Development data that are temperature-dependent and variable, and therefore prone to different degrees of error depending on the combination of data sets, calculations, and assumptions applied in a specific instance. Because of this potential error, validating the methods employed is necessary for determining accuracy and precision of a given technique. For forensic entomology, validation of Development data sets is one approach for identifying the uncertainty associated with insect age estimates. Cochliomyia macellaria (Fabricius) is a primary colonizer of remains across the United States and is commonly encountered in forensic investigations. A Development study for this species was produced for a central Texas, U.S. population; the variation associated with this data set and the pre-appearance interval were previously explored in an ecological model. The objectives of this study were to determine the accuracy of the Development data and the validity of the ecological model when applied to immatures of known age developing under field conditions. Results indicate this data set is an accurate predictor of insect age when using Development Stage, supporting the validity of the ecological model in central Texas. Age predictions made with all Stages present in a sample were more accurate than predictions made with the most developed Stage in a sample, and estimates of age when using the prepupal Stage were overestimated regardless of prediction method, though thermal requirements for total Development were similar.

  • Assessment of maize yield and phenology by drone-mounted superspectral camera

    Abstract:

    The capability of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) spectral imagery to assess maize yield under full and deficit irrigation is demonstrated by a Tetracam MiniMCA12 11 bands camera. The MiniMCA12 was used to image an experimental field of 19 maize hybrids. Yield prediction models were explored for different maize Development Stages, with the best model found using maize plant Development Stage reproductive 2 (R2) for both maize grain yield and ear weight (respective R^2 values of 0.73 and 0.49, and root mean square error of validation (RMSEV) values of 2.07 and 3.41 metric tons per hectare using partial least squares regression (PLS-R) validation models). Models using vegetation indices for inputs rather than superspectral data showed similar R^2 but higher RMSEV values, and produced best results for the R4 Development Stage. In addition to being able to predict yield, spectral models were able to distinguish between different Development Stages and irrigation treatments. These abilities potentially allow for yield prediction of maize plants whose Development Stage and water status are unknown.
