    Abstract:

    This essay reviews some of the main interpretations in Development studies on agriculture's contribution to economic Development. It explores the relationship between agriculture and industry as well as between the rural and urban sectors in the process of Development. These issues are discussed by analysing the so-called ‘Soviet industrialisation debate’, the ‘urban bias’ thesis, the Development Strategies pursued in East Asia and Latin America from a comparative perspective, the impact of neoliberal policies on rural–urban relations and the ‘agriculture-for-Development’ proposal of the World Development Report 2008. The main argument arising from analysing these issues is that a Development strategy which creates and enhances the synergies between agriculture and industry and goes beyond the rural–urban divide offers the best possibilities for generating a process of rural Development able to eradicate rural poverty.

  • Support for Local Economic Development Strategies: A Microeconomic Analysis

    Using data from a sample of rural Illinois residents, a model predicting individual willingness to support local economic Development and growth efforts is reported. Within a framework of a random utility model, data on stated preferences for 12 specific economic Development Strategies are examined separately and in aggregate using three indices of overall support. Based on ordered logit and ordinary least squares analyses, results suggest that younger, more highly educated residents who do not own their home or who are retired more often support Development efforts. Results also suggest that residents more often support Strategies viewed as investing in people rather than Strategies directly targeting businesses.

  • Dengue vaccine Development: Strategies and challenges

    Infection with dengue virus may result in dengue fever or a more severe outcome, such as dengue hemorrhagic syndrome/shock. Dengue virus infection poses a threat to endemic regions for four reasons: the presence of four serotypes, each with the ability to cause a similar disease outcome, including fatality; difficulties related to vector control; the lack of specific treatment; and the nonavailability of a suitable vaccine. Vaccine Development is considered challenging due to the severity of the disease observed in individuals who have acquired dengue-specific immunity, either passively or actively. Therefore, the presence of vaccine-induced immunity against a particular serotype may prime an individual to severe disease on exposure to dengue virus. Vaccine Development Strategies include live attenuated vaccines, chimeric, DNA-based, subunit, and inactivated vaccines. Each of the candidates is in various stages of preclinical and clinical Development. Issues pertaining to selection pressures, viral interaction, and safety still need to be evaluated in order to induce a complete protective immune response against all four serotypes. This review highlights the various Strategies that have been employed in vaccine Development, and identifies the obstacles to producing a safe and effective vaccine.

    :  This paper examines the role of several export Development Strategies in relaxing export supply capacity constraints and promoting export expansion and diversification in Africa. It starts with a review of the analysis and recommendations in Can Africa Claim the 21st Century? (World Bank, 2000) and an identification of subsisting supply obstacles. This forms the background against which the paper discusses changes in the growth, structure and destination of African exports during 2000–2005; explores the use of export Development Strategies (such as supply chain management, networks and clusters, as well as branding); and discusses the enhancement of market access of African exports regionally and globally. The paper concludes with an analysis of the prospects for relaxing Africa's export supply response capacity constraints and the feasibility/viability of the suggested Strategies for expanding and diversifying the region's exports.

    Abstract Island ecosystems are vulnerable and require sustainable Development. However, sustainable Development of island ecosystems should be based on an accurate evaluation. In this paper, principal component analysis (PCA) was adopted to construct a framework for the evaluation of island ecosystems, followed by the design of sustainable Development Strategies. The Zhoushan Archipelago in China was used as a case study. First, 15 typical island ecosystem indices were selected to represent five dimensions: climatic, geographical, landscape, social, and biological. According to scores of these five dimensions, islands of the Zhoushan Archipelago were then categorized into three groups: Specially Promoting Islands, Partially Renovating Islands, and Ecologically Controlling Islands. Finally, sustainable Development Strategies were designed for each island type. This research has an important theoretical contribution because existing studies have previously treated island ecosystems as homogeneous when in fact island ecosystems are heterogeneous. The heterogeneity of islands ecosystems was incorporated into analysis by PCA. The empirical contribution of this study was that, after taking heterogeneity into account, an accurate evaluation of island ecosystems could be obtained to enable the design of targeted sustainable Development Strategies for different islands.
