    Structured methods based on dataflow diagrams and data modelling are widely used for system analysis and Design, but they are not suited for Dialogue Design. This paper shows a method for Dialogue Design that is based on modified data modelling and dataflow diagrams: The usual datamodel is complemented with a forms-based or picture-based model. This model is later extended with function bubbles representing Dialogue actions.

    A User Interface Management System (UIMS) handles the Dialogue between an application program and the end-user, and it provides tools for construction of the Dialogue. Ideally, it should be possible to develop the Dialogue part concurrently with the application part. This would speed up development and allow a user-centered Dialogue Design to be combined with a more formal application development. To what extent this is actually possible, depends on the interface between the UIMS and the application program.

    Abstract:

    Building an industrial spoken Dialogue system (SDS) requires several iterations of Design, deployment, test, and evalua- tion phases. Most industrial SDS develop- ers use a graphical tool to Design Dialogue strategies. They are critical to get good system performances, but their evaluation is not part of the Design phase. We propose integrating Dialogue logs into the Design tool so that developers can jointly monitor call flows and their asso- ciated Key Performance Indicators (KPI). It drastically shortens the complete devel- opment cycle, and offers a new Design ex- perience. Orange Dialogue Design Studio (ODDS), our Design tool, allows developers to de- sign several alternatives and compare their relative performances. It helps the SDS developers to understand and analyse the user behaviour, with the assistance of a re- inforcement learning algorithm. The SDS developers can thus confront the different KPI and control the further SDS choices by updating the call flow alternatives.

    Abstract:

    The field of spoken Dialogue systems has developed rapidly. However, optimisation, evaluation and rapid development of systems remain problematic. This paper describes a method of producing a probabilistic simulation of mixed initiative Dialogue with recognition and understanding errors. Both user behaviour and system errors are modelled using a data-driven approach, and the quality of the simulations are evaluated by comparing them to real human-machine Dialogues. The simulation system can be used to perform rapid evaluations of prototype systems, thus aiding the development process. It is also envisaged that it will be used as a tool for automation of Dialogue Design.
