    Abstract:

    The zooplankton of a Rift Valley lake in Ethiopia, Awasa, was sampled at 3 stations for 2 years (1986 and 1987) concurrently with various meteorological and limnological measurements. The spatial and temporal variation in abundance of some numerically dominant crustaceans, Mesocyclops aequatorialis similis (Copepoda), Thermocyclops consimilis (Copepoda) and Diaphanosoma excisum (Cladocera) is discussed. Temporal (months, sampling dates) rather than spatial (station) variability accounts for more than 50% of the total variance in zooplankton abundance but horizontal patchiness exists during periods of high zooplankton density. Sampling errors were generally low, except for counts of cyclopoid nauplii (subsampling) and Diaphanosoma (inter-replicate variance). Zooplankton showed distinct seasonality associated with the mixing cycle of the lake. Total numbers increased to more than 200 000 m^−3 during the unstratified period (July to September). Low numbers were evident during stratification (February to May) when zooplankton numbers did not exceed 15 000 m^−3. Individual zooplankton species and age classes showed variable seasonal amplitudes, ranging from 6.4 (nauplius 3) to 44.8 (copepodite 3 of Mesocyclops ). We discuss some possible causes for zooplankton seasonality in Lake Awasa, and also review zooplankton seasonal cycles in other tropical lakes, especially African ones.

    Abstract:

    This paper describes a previously unknown ctenopod crustacean of the family Sididae, collected in Brazil and Venezuela which, along with the forms known as Diaphanosoma volzi, displays distinctive characteristics that are here recognised as being of generic magnitude. Phenetic analysis of the species within the family Sididae, supports the hypothesis that NeoDiaphanosoma constitutes a well defined group, differentiated enough from Diaphanosoma to be accepted as a different genus. The new genus seems to be a group of specialised species, close to Diaphanosoma with advanced features. Some features shared with Sarsilatona, Latonopsis and Pseudosida probably reflect convergence related to littoral habitat more than ancestry.

    Diaphanosoma turkanae sp. nov. is described from Lake Turkana (Kenya, East Africa). This species is the second Afrotropical endemic in the order Ctenopoda. It is characterized by a distinctive feature, the presence of an unusually small number of setae on the upper two-segmented antennal branch (exopodite); the proximal segment of the branch always bears three setae while the distal segment bears either six or seven setae. Morphologically the new species is most similar to D. orghidani Negrea , also occurring in Africa and presumably sharing an evolutionary affinity. D. turkanae sp. nov. co-occurs with two other species of the genus, D. lacustris Kořinek and D. excisum Sars, which are briefly described here. Temperate-subtropical species of the genus Diaphanosoma penetrate far south along the Nile River system up to the equatorial and Ethiopian lakes and further southwards, often forming multi-species assemblages.

    This series of communications is aimed to report on a study of the water fleas (Crustacea, Cladocera) of Central Yakutia. This first communication provides brief descriptions of the representatives of the families Sididae, Daphniidae, and Ophryoxidae, namely Sida crystallina (O.F. Muller 1776), Diaphanosoma orghidani orghidani Negrea 1982, Diaphanosoma amurensis Korovchinsky et Sheveleva 2009, Diaphanosoma brachyurum (Lievin 1848), Scapholeberis mucronata (O.F. Muller 1776), Scapholeberis rammneri Dumont et Pensaert 1983, Megafenestra cf. nasuta (Birge 1879), Simocephalus cf. serrulatus (Koch 1841), and Ophryoxus kolymensis Smirnov 1992. Remarks are given on the occurrence of these taxa in Northern Eurasia.

    Diaphanosoma macedonicum sp. nov. is described from material collected from the ancient Lakes Dojran and Prespa, located in the central part of the Balkan Peninsula. It can be regarded as a member of the “ D. mongolianum ” species group. It is characterized by specific, but not readily visible features, such as the absence of a thorn near the posterior valve margins, as well as setules between setae of the ventral valve inflection, and the presence of more chitinized integument. The discovery of this new species previously identified as " Diaphanosoma brachyurum (Lievin)" highlights the necessity of more detailed investigations of the zooplankton of Balkan lakes potentially populated by greater numbers of endemic cladoceran species. A short overview of the ancient lakes in the Central Balkans is provided.

    Abstract:

    The investigation of an extensive collection of zooplankton samples from Northeast and East Thailand has revealed 10 species of the family Sididae, members of which often were mostly frequently distributed and abundant among Cladocera. Of seven species of the genus Diaphanosoma, one is new to science (D. elongatum sp. nov.) and two others, D. senegal and D. macrophthalma, new to Thailand. The genus Pseudosida is represented by P. szalayi instead of P. bidentata incorrectly recorded previously. Eleven species of Sididae are now known from Northeast Thailand and 12 from the whole country. The highest frequency occurrence and abundance were observed in D. excisum, D. dubium, Latonopsis australis, and P. szalayi while other species were more infrequent (D. sarsi) or rare. Sididae species were often observed co-occurring in different combinations, among them up to three-four species of Diaphanosoma. The rare species D. senegal frequently co-occurred with large Branchiopoda. Most Sididae of Northeast Thailand are of tropical origin while others (D. dubium, D. macrophthalma, Sida crystallina) have penetrated here from more northern latitudes.

    Abstract:

    Review of the Sididae of the Pacific Ocean islands revealed only three species (Diaphanosoma sarsi s. l., Latonopsis australis s. l., and L. brehmi) so far known from New Caledonia, Vanuatu (New Hebrides), Fiji, Guam Island, and Hawaii. Study of museum and other additional material made it possible to describe a new species, D. samoaensis, from West Samoa, the first record of an endemic sidid on a small ocean island. Its mode of speciation is discussed.
