A total of 131 experts were invited, and of these 65 accepted, with 48 completing Delphi round I and 51 completing Delphi round II. In all, a total of 57 experts from North America, Europe, Asia and Australia commented on the 47 suggested guidelines. Results Forty-three guidelines were generated, grouped into the following four stages: Stage I. Define what is to be measured in terms of Dietary intake (what? who? and when?); Stage II. Investigate different types of DATs; Stage III. Evaluate existing tools to select the most appropriate DAT by evaluating published validation studies; Stage IV. Think through the implementation of the chosen DAT and consider sources of potential biases. Conclusions The Delphi technique consolidated expert views on best practice in assessing Dietary intake. A new website to support Dietary Assessment in health research: Nutritools.org: Nisreen Alwan

CadeAbstract:Background Measuring Dietary intake is difficult and strategies which enable researchers to select the most appropriate Dietary Assessment tools (DATs) are needed. The DIET@NET partnership aimed to create a central resource to improve the quality, consistency and comparability of Dietary data. Methods Development of the Nutritools website was divided into 3 strands. 1) Creating Best Practice Guidelines (BPG) which enables researchers to choose the most appropriate DAT for their work. These were generated using the Delphi method which enabled integration of expert views. 2) Creating an interactive DAT e-library, with the DATs being identified through a systematic review of reviews. 3) Creating an online interface (Food Questionnaire Creator (FQC)) between food tables and DATs. Results The main features of the Nutritools website, includes the interactive Dietary Assessment Guidelines comprising of 43 BPG and a summary of the strengths and weaknesses of the Dietary Assessment methods. The DAT e-library provides in-depth information regarding the tools and validation study characteristics, and results. This information is also provided visually through bubble and summary plots, which allows easier comparison between the DATs. Finally, the FQC allows researchers to create new online food questionnaires or use existing DATs identified from the systematic review. Users can map their questionnaire to the latest food composition databases. Currently the FQC only provides UK DATs and databases but it has the capability to allow for international databases and tools to be added. Conclusions DIET@NET partnership has created the state-of-the-art Nutritools website, www.nutritools.org, which provides guidance to researchers undertaking studies that require Dietary Assessment. By providing guidance and access to validated DATs, the quality, consistency and comparability of Dietary Assessment in research can be improved. Best Practices for Conducting and Interpreting Studies to Validate Self-Report Dietary Assessment Methods.

FrongilloAbstract:Abstract Careful consideration of the validity and reliability of methods intended to assess Dietary intake is central to the robustness of nutrition research. A Dietary Assessment method with high validity is capable of providing useful measurement for a given purpose and context. More specifically, a method with high validity is well grounded in theory; its performance is consistent with that theory; and it is precise, dependable, and accurate within specified performance standards. Assessing the extent to which Dietary Assessment methods possess these characteristics can be difficult due to the complexity of Dietary intake, as well as difficulties capturing true intake. We identified challenges and best practices related to the validation of self-report Dietary Assessment methods. The term validation is used to encompass various dimensions that must be assessed and considered to determine whether a given method is suitable for a specific purpose. Evidence on the varied concepts of validity and reliability should be interpreted in combination to inform judgments about the suitability of a method for a specified purpose. Self-report methods are the focus because they are used in most studies seeking to measure Dietary intake. Biomarkers are important reference measures to validate self-report methods and are also discussed. A checklist is proposed to contribute to strengthening the literature on the validation of Dietary Assessment methods and ultimately, the nutrition literature more broadly.

Self-Report Dietary Assessment Tools Used in Canadian Research: A Scoping Review.

Through a scoping review, we characterized self-report tools used to assess diet in Canada to identify patterns in tool use and to inform strategies to strengthen nutrition research. The research databases Medline, PubMed, PsycINFO, and CINAHL were used to identify Canadian studies published from 2009 to 2014 that included a self-report Assessment of Dietary intake. The search elicited 2358 records that were screened to identify those that reported on self-report Dietary intake among nonclinical, non-Aboriginal adult populations. A pool of 189 articles (reflecting 92 studies) was examined in-depth to assess the Dietary Assessment tools used. Food-frequency questionnaires (FFQs) and screeners were used in 64% of studies, whereas food records and 24-h recalls were used in 18% and 14% of studies, respectively. Three studies (3%) used a single question to assess diet, and for 3 studies the tool used was not clear. A variety of distinct FFQs and screeners, including those developed and/or adapted for use in Canada and those developed elsewhere, were used. Some tools were reported to have been evaluated previously in terms of validity or reliability, but details of psychometric testing were often lacking. Energy and fat were the most commonly studied, reported by 42% and 39% of studies, respectively. For ∼20% of studies, Dietary data were used to assess Dietary quality or patterns, whereas close to half assessed ≤5 Dietary components. A variety of Dietary Assessment tools are used in Canadian research. Strategies to improve the application of current evidence on best practices in Dietary Assessment have the potential to support a stronger and more cohesive literature on diet and health. Such strategies could benefit from national and global collaboration.

Development of Nutritools, an interactive Dietary Assessment tools website, for use in health research

The aim of this work was to improve the quality of Dietary data collected in epidemiological studies. Therefore, the Dietary Assessment Tools NETwork (DIET@NET) partnership, a network of scientific experts, has created the Nutritools website. Methods Development of the Nutritools website was divided into three strands: creation of best practice guidelines, developed with the Delphi technique to obtain expert views (the guidelines enable researchers to choose the most appropriate Dietary Assessment tool for their work); creation of an interactive Dietary Assessment tool e-library, with eligible Dietary Assessment tools being identified through a systematic review of reviews that searched seven databases; and creation of an online interface between food tables and Dietary Assessment tools—namely, the Food Questionnaire Creator (FQC). The work was guided by the DIET@NET partnership. Findings Interactive Dietary Assessment guidelines were generated with feedback from 57 international experts. 43 guidelines and a summary of the strengths and weaknesses of the Dietary Assessment methods were included. The Dietary Assessment tool e-library included data for 62 UK validated tools, which were obtained from 43 systematic reviews identified. The tool library will provide in-depth information about the tools, validation study characteristics, and results. This information is also provided visually through bubble and summary plots, allowing easier comparison between the Dietary Assessment tools. The FQC was based on the principles of common food frequency questionnaires and allows users to create and develop new online food questionnaires. Users can map their online questionnaires to the latest UK food database (McCance and Widdowson's Composition of Foods, 7th edn). The FQC will also host a number of validated Dietary Assessment tools that have been adapted for online use. Interpretation The DIET@NET partnership has created a unique Dietary Assessment reference website (live from November, 2017) using expert guidance and systematic review. The website allows visual comparison of Dietary Assessment tools and hosts validated, interactive tools. The best practice guidelines assist researchers in selecting the most appropriate tool for their study. DIET@NET: Best Practice Guidelines for Dietary Assessment in health research

The Dietary Assessment Tool NETwork (DIET@NET) aimed to establish expert consensus on Best Practice Guidelines (BPGs) for Dietary Assessment using self-report. The BPGs were developed using the Delphi technique. Two Delphi rounds were conducted. A total of 131 experts were invited, and of these 65 accepted, with 48 completing Delphi round I and 51 completing Delphi round II. In all, a total of 57 experts from North America, Europe, Asia and Australia commented on the 47 suggested guidelines. Forty-three guidelines were generated, grouped into the following four stages: Stage I. Define what is to be measured in terms of Dietary intake (what? who? and when?); Stage II. Investigate different types of DATs; Stage III. Evaluate existing tools to select the most appropriate DAT by evaluating published validation studies; Stage IV. Think through the implementation of the chosen DAT and consider sources of potential biases. The Delphi technique consolidated expert views on best practice in assessing Dietary intake. The BPGs provide a valuable guide for health researchers to choose the most appropriate Dietary Assessment method for their studies. These guidelines will be accessible through the Nutritools website, www.nutritools.org .

A new website to support Dietary Assessment in health research: Nutritools.org: Nisreen Alwan

CadeAbstract:Background Measuring Dietary intake is difficult and strategies which enable researchers to select the most appropriate Dietary Assessment tools (DATs) are needed. The DIET@NET partnership aimed to create a central resource to improve the quality, consistency and comparability of Dietary data. Methods Development of the Nutritools website was divided into 3 strands. 1) Creating Best Practice Guidelines (BPG) which enables researchers to choose the most appropriate DAT for their work. These were generated using the Delphi method which enabled integration of expert views. 2) Creating an interactive DAT e-library, with the DATs being identified through a systematic review of reviews. 3) Creating an online interface (Food Questionnaire Creator (FQC)) between food tables and DATs. Results The main features of the Nutritools website, includes the interactive Dietary Assessment Guidelines comprising of 43 BPG and a summary of the strengths and weaknesses of the Dietary Assessment methods. The DAT e-library provides in-depth information regarding the tools and validation study characteristics, and results. This information is also provided visually through bubble and summary plots, which allows easier comparison between the DATs. Finally, the FQC allows researchers to create new online food questionnaires or use existing DATs identified from the systematic review. Users can map their questionnaire to the latest food composition databases. Currently the FQC only provides UK DATs and databases but it has the capability to allow for international databases and tools to be added. Conclusions DIET@NET partnership has created the state-of-the-art Nutritools website, www.nutritools.org, which provides guidance to researchers undertaking studies that require Dietary Assessment. By providing guidance and access to validated DATs, the quality, consistency and comparability of Dietary Assessment in research can be improved. Development of Nutritools, an interactive Dietary Assessment tools website, for use in health research

The aim of this work was to improve the quality of Dietary data collected in epidemiological studies. Therefore, the Dietary Assessment Tools NETwork (DIET@NET) partnership, a network of scientific experts, has created the Nutritools website. Methods Development of the Nutritools website was divided into three strands: creation of best practice guidelines, developed with the Delphi technique to obtain expert views (the guidelines enable researchers to choose the most appropriate Dietary Assessment tool for their work); creation of an interactive Dietary Assessment tool e-library, with eligible Dietary Assessment tools being identified through a systematic review of reviews that searched seven databases; and creation of an online interface between food tables and Dietary Assessment tools—namely, the Food Questionnaire Creator (FQC). The work was guided by the DIET@NET partnership. Findings Interactive Dietary Assessment guidelines were generated with feedback from 57 international experts. 43 guidelines and a summary of the strengths and weaknesses of the Dietary Assessment methods were included. The Dietary Assessment tool e-library included data for 62 UK validated tools, which were obtained from 43 systematic reviews identified. The tool library will provide in-depth information about the tools, validation study characteristics, and results. This information is also provided visually through bubble and summary plots, allowing easier comparison between the Dietary Assessment tools. The FQC was based on the principles of common food frequency questionnaires and allows users to create and develop new online food questionnaires. Users can map their online questionnaires to the latest UK food database (McCance and Widdowson's Composition of Foods, 7th edn). The FQC will also host a number of validated Dietary Assessment tools that have been adapted for online use. Interpretation The DIET@NET partnership has created a unique Dietary Assessment reference website (live from November, 2017) using expert guidance and systematic review. The website allows visual comparison of Dietary Assessment tools and hosts validated, interactive tools. The best practice guidelines assist researchers in selecting the most appropriate tool for their study. Researchers can access validated Dietary Assessment tools through the e-library and create their own using the FQC. Funding UK Medical Research Council (grant no MR/L02019X/1).
