the bigfoot initiative an investigation of Digital Footprint awareness in social media
Proceedings of the 9th International Conference on Social Media and Society, 2018Co-Authors: Kevin Koidl, Owen Conlan, Wessel Reijers, Mark Farrell, Melissa HooverAbstract:Social media has become an important part of modern-day communication. Advantages span from instant communication via direct messages to sharing and consuming content and experiences. Lately, social media applications have been criticized for assisting the spreading of harmful or fake news and distorting reality by enabling unauthentic self-representation. It is often argued, that social media platforms are solely responsible for these challenges and for offering solutions. This research uses the notion of a Digital Footprint, a codified representation of a user's social media engagement, to facilitate user reflection. This Footprint, however, is mostly a product of the user's deliberate and conscious engagement. This paper argues that users also have a responsibility in addressing the above-mentioned challenges by increasing their awareness of their social media usage. This paper presents a study with close to 300 participants investigating if they are aware of their Digital Footprint in social media. The paper presents the overall challenges, as well as experimental design and results, with the goal of motivating further debate regarding user awareness of their social media usage.

regionalization analysis and mapping for the source and sink of tourist flows
ISPRS international journal of geo-information, 2019Co-Authors: Qiushi Gu, Haiping Zhang, Min Chen, Chongcheng ChenAbstract:At present, population mobility for the purpose of tourism has become a popular phenomenon. As it becomes easier to capture big data on the tourist Digital Footprint, it is possible to analyze the respective regional features and driving forces for both tourism sources and destination regions at a macro level. Based on the data of tourist flows to Nanjing on five short-period national holidays in China, this study first calculated the travel rate of tourist source regions (315 cities) and the geographical concentration index of the visited attractions (51 scenic spots). Then, the spatial autocorrelation metrics index was used to analyze the global autocorrelation of the travel rates of tourist source regions and the geographical concentration index of the tourist destinations on five short-term national holidays. Finally, a heuristic unsupervised machine-learning method was used to analyze and map tourist sources and visited attractions by adopting the travel rate and the geographical concentration index accordingly as regionalized variables. The results indicate that both source and sink regions expressed distinctive regional differentiation patterns in the corresponding regional variables. This study method provides a practical tool for analyzing regionalization of big data in tourist flows, and it can also be applied to other origin-destination (OD) studies.

using big data tools to analyze Digital Footprint in the covid 19 pandemic some public health ethics considerations
Asia-Pacific Journal of Public Health, 2020Co-Authors: Olivia Miu Yung Ngan, Adam M KelmensonAbstract:While many freedoms became halted by city lockdowns and restrictive travel bans amid coronavirus crisis, some countries and regions reopened with public health monitoring and surveillance measures in place. Technology applications such as real-time location data, geofencing technology, video camera footage, and credit card history are now used in novel and poorly understood ways to track movement patterns to stem viral spread. The use of big data analytics, which sometimes involve involuntary and unconsented data access and disclosure, raise public unease about data protection. The result is a balance between public health safety and ethical use of personal data that pushes the limits of privacy rights. Is it ethically permissible to use big data analytics instantiating the goal of public health by infringing on personal privacy in exchange for maximizing public security? Demonstrating the effectiveness of public health measures is difficult as scientific uncertainties and social complexities are presented. This article provides some public health ethics considerations in balancing benefits of public security and personal privacy infringement, supported with examples drawn from Asian countries and regions.
