It can be used to identify physical, Digital, or abstract entities. The Identifiers (DOI names) resolve to data specified by the registrant, and use an extensible metadata model to associate descriptive and other elements of data with the DOI name. The DOI system is implemented through a federation of registration agencies, under policies and common infrastructure provided by the International DOI Foundation which developed and controls the system. The DOI system has been developed and implemented in a range of publishing applications since 2000; by early 2009 over 40 million DOIs had been assigned. The DOI system provides Identifiers which are persistent, unique, resolvable, and interoperable and so useful for management of content on Digital networks in automated and controlled ways

Digital Object Identifier implementing a standard Digital Identifier as the key to effective Digital rights management
2000Co-Authors: Norman PaskinAbstract:The future of the content industry is now clearly tied to the future of the Internet and its successors, requiring a fundamental shift from physical to electronic dissemination. All current varieties of intellectual property (e.g. books, music, journals, video, software), and those types yet to be invented, will be involved in this migration, and the boundaries that exist between current content types, especially at the level of supporting infrastructure, will be eliminated. Instead of (or in addition to) different physical formats requiring different content distribution infrastructures, all content will consist of streams of Digital data moving over networks. Diverse content industries will increasingly find themselves sharing the same problems and opportunities in delivering their content to their consumers. One of the key issues in the move from physical to electronic distribution of content is the evolution of a common technical and procedural infrastructure to identify, or name, pieces of content in a Digital environment. A common and well understood approach to referencing Objects is essential to the evolution of services required for content providers to grow and prosper in the era of increasingly sophisticated computer networking. The referencing system must also work with existing systems for naming tangible and intangible intellectual property entities. In 1998 the International DOI Foundation (IDF) was established to address this challenge, assuming a leadership role in the development of a multi-tiered framework of infrastructure, policies and procedures to support multinational, multi-community content provider requirements. Membership in the IDF is open to all organisations (for-profit or not-for-profit) with an interest in electronic publishing and its related enabling technologies. Major components of the IDF mission involve stimulating interest in and understanding of this framework, encouraging alliances and collaborative activities designed to explore in depth the complex issues to be addressed, and influencing the development of standards which would ensure the appropriate level of value-added and quality control across the spectrum of participation. The main activity of the IDF is to encourage the implementation and use of a standard Digital Identifier: the Digital Object Identifier (DOI). The IDF was an early supporter of the INDECS (Interoperability of Data in E-Commerce) initiative, providing financial support and promoting the concept of well-formed interoperable metadata. It has used indecs as its metadata model.

The Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is a major initiative from the content industries which is now being implemented widely. The DOI is a unique Identifier of any piece of intellectual content (in any form), together with a system for using that Identifier to locate Digital services (on the Internet) associated with that content. This paper describes as separate strands the approach of the technology and the content communities, and how these have been brought together in the DOI initial implementation (as a reliable location tool) and future implementations of other services. The DOI has strong support from many quarters, and is funded by a not‐for‐profit independent foundation.

Electronic Commerce Research and Applications, 2011Co-Authors: Sungbum Park, Hangjung Zo, Andrew P CiganekAbstract:Systems for identifying and managing Digital Objects are becoming essential for Digital content providers as the growth of the Digital content market accelerates. Not much research has been done to examine the successful adoption of Digital Object Identifier systems. This study examines the success factors for the adoption of Digital Object Identifier systems by extending DeLone and McLean's information systems success model. A large-scale field study targeting Digital content providers in Korea was employed to empirically validate a research model. Data was collected from 120 respondents from 41 Digital content providers. The results indicate that information quality is the strongest factor to influence organizational benefits through perceived usefulness and user satisfaction. The syndication efforts of Digital content providers can be a moderator in the successful adoption of Digital Object Identifier systems. This has implications for how practitioners can best communicate the features and benefits of Digital Object Identifier systems and provides additional support for researchers to examine the underutilized construct of organizational benefit. Limitations of this study are discussed in addition to concluding remarks.

One type of implementation of a Digital Object Identifier developed by the Korean Government is termed the Universal Content Identifier (UCI) system. It circulates and utilizes identifiable resources efficiently by connecting various online and offline identifying schemes. UCI tags can contain not only Identifiers but also abundant additional information regarding contents. So, researchers and practitioners have shown great interest in methods that utilize the two-dimensional barcode (2D barcode) to attach UCI tags to Digital contents. However, attaching a 2D barcode directly to a Digital content raises two problems. First, quality of the content may deteriorate due to the insertion of the barcode; second, a malicious user can invalidate the identifying tag, simply by removing the tag from the original content. We believe that these concerns can be mitigated by inserting an invisible Digital tag containing information about an Identifier and Digital copyrights into the entire area of the Digital content. In this study, to protect copyrights of Digital contents securely without quality degradation, we attempt to discover a sequence of process for generating a 2D barcode from a UCI tag and watermarking the barcode into a Digital content. Such a UCI system can be widely applied to areas such as e-learning, distribution tracking, transaction certification, and reference linking services when the system is equipped with 2D barcode technology and secure watermarking algorithms. The latter part of this paper analyzes intensive experiments conducted to evaluate the robustness of traditional Digital watermarking algorithms against external attacks.

Availability of Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) in Web of Science and Scopus
Journal of Informetrics, 2016Co-Authors: Juan Gorraiz, Christian Gumpenberger, David Melero-fuentes, Juan-carlos Valderrama-zuriánAbstract:This study aims to shed light on the implementation of the Digital Object Identifier (DOI) in the two most important multidisciplinary databases, namely Web of Science Core Collection and Scopus, within the last decade (2005–2014). The results show a generally increased percentage of items with DOI in all the disciplines in both databases, which provide very similar numbers and trends. While the percentage of citable items with a DOI has already reached 90% in the Sciences and the Social Sciences in 2014, it has remained much lower in the Arts & Humanities, exceeding 50% only since 2013. The observed values for Books and Proceedings are even lower despite the importance of these document types, particularly for the Social Sciences and the Arts & Humanities. The fact that there are still journals with a large number of items still lacking DOIs in 2014 should be alarming for the corresponding editors and should give them reason to enhance the formal quality and visibility of their journals. Finally, scientists are also encouraged to review their publication strategies and to favour publication channels with established DOI assignments.

Research data explored: an extended analysis of citations and altmetrics
Scientometrics, 2016Co-Authors: Isabella Peters, Peter Kraker, Christian Gumpenberger, Elisabeth Lex, Juan GorraizAbstract:In this study, we explore the citedness of research data, its distribution over time and its relation to the availability of a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) in the Thomson Reuters database Data Citation Index (DCI). We investigate if cited research data "impacts" the (social) web, reflected by altmetrics scores, and if there is any relationship between the number of citations and the sum of altmetrics scores from various social media platforms. Three tools are used to collect altmetrics scores, namely PlumX, ImpactStory, and Altmetric.com, and the corresponding results are compared. We found that out of the three altmetrics tools, PlumX has the best coverage. Our experiments revealed that research data remain mostly uncited (about 85 %), although there has been an increase in citing data sets published since 2008. The percentage of the number of cited research data with a DOI in DCI has decreased in the last years. Only nine repositories are responsible for research data with DOIs and two or more citations. The number of cited research data with altmetrics "foot-prints" is even lower (4-9 %) but shows a higher coverage of research data from the last decade. In our study, we also found no correlation between the number of citations and the total number of altmetrics scores. Yet, certain data types (i.e. survey, aggregate data, and sequence data) are more often cited and also receive higher altmetrics scores. Additionally, we performed citation and altmetric analyses of all research data published between 2011 and 2013 in four different disciplines covered by the DCI. In general, these results correspond very well with the ones obtained for research data cited at least twice and also show low numbers in citations and in altmetrics. Finally, we observed that there are disciplinary differences in the availability and extent of altmetrics scores.
