    Abstract:

    The aim of this study was to investigate (1) whether intestine endoparasites (Diphyllobothrium latum) accumulate trace elements related to its body size and (2) whether parasites bioconcentrate more trace elements than their host. Freshwater fish (rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss) were sampled in the deep, oligotrophic and uncontaminated Lake Rinihue in Southern Chile. The element concentration of different organs (intestine, muscle, liver) and of the intestine endoparasites were analyzed using total reflection X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. The results showed that the mass fraction for Mn, Fe, Ni, Cu, and Pb decreased significantly with the body size (dry weight) of the endoparasite. Only Zn did not reveal such a relationship. Small parasites accumulated up to 80 times more Fe, Ni, Mn, Pb, and Cu than large parasites. Compared to the fish organs, small parasites accumulated in maximum 35 to 307 times more Mn, 5 to 255 times more Fe, 98 to 220 times more Ni, 3 to 175 times more Cu, and 0.4 to 12 times more Zn than the fish. Lead was only found in the endoparasite, but not in the fish organs. We conclude that (1) D. latum is a good indicator for trace element accumulation in fishes and that (2) small endoparasites are more sensitive as bioindicators because they showed higher bioconcentrations of trace metals than larger parasites.

    Abstract Five species of copepod crustaceans from four lakes in southern Chile were experimentally exposed to coracidia of Diphyllobothrium latum. Diphyllobothrium latum developed into mature procercoids in the calanoid copepods Boeckella gracilis and Diaptomus diabolicus, but only developed into the initial stage in the cyclopoid copepod Mesocyclops longisetus. The cyclopoid copepods Tropocyclops prasinus and Metacyclops mendocinus were not susceptible to the infection. In our experimental infections we obtained a prevalence of 26.8% in B. gracilis from Lake Malleco, 55.9% in D. diabolicus from Lake Rapel, 84.3% in D. diabolicus from Lake Panguipulli, and 7.7–22.6% for M. longisetus from Lake Panguipulli. The mean and maximum intensity were observed in D. diabolicus from Lake Panguipulli. We conclude that D. diabolicus is probably the primary intermediate host of D. latum because it is the most widespread copepod in southern Chile.

    Abstract:

    The broad fish tapeworm, Diphyllobothrium latum, is an exotic species in both Chile and Argentina, and until now, its copepod host has remained unknown in South American waters. The objective of this study was to identify calanoid copepod species that may be intermediate hosts for D. latum in Lake Panguipulli, Chile. In this lake, the highest levels of infection by this tapeworm occur in the introduced rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. Of the 2 calanoid copepods found in Lake Panguipulli, Diaptomus diabolicus and Boeckella gracilipes, only D. diabolicus became infected on experimental exposure to coracidia. Prevalence (mean intensity) of experimental infection in adult copepods was 73.2% (2.8 procercoids per host). Diaptomus diabolicus has been demonstrated to be a new intermediate host; this is the first record of a copepod host for D. latum in South America.

    Abstract:

    Fifteen new human cases of diphyllobothriasis in Chile are reported, one of them a multiple case of infection by Diphyllobothrium latum. Five scolices and 28 m of strobila were recovered after treatment with Niclosamide in a male adult patient with multiple infection. In other 5 cases, after treatment, only one worm was recovered in each person and all corresponded to D. latum species; worms measured between 2.9 to 11.0m. In 9 cases, only the eggs of parasites were reported in the coprological exam. Thirteen cases were determined in the lakes area from south of Chile where infection by plerocercoids in salmonids is very frequent and the persons consume smoked and raw ("cebiche") fishes.

    We document a case of locally acquired "broad- or fish-tapeworm" infection caused by Diphyllobothrium latum in a 27-year-old Spanish man, confirmed by molecular analysis (COI gene). The patient had naturally expelled a worm of 110 cm in length, but the physical examination did not yield any remarkable findings, and the patient did not suffer from any particular symptoms. Laboratory test results were normal except for a remarkable increase in the red blood cell count, and an evident decrease in the mean corpuscular volume and mean corpuscular hemoglobin. Vitamin B12 and folic acid values were in the normal range without signs of anemia. It was suggested that these anomalies in erythrocyte formation might not be related to the parasite, and analysis of the patient's anamnestic data revealed that the infection could only have been caused by the ingestion of imported fish, although no light could be shed on the specific source of infection. From a public health viewpoint, this human case of fish-borne zoonosis is exemplary, suggesting that not only is control of fish and fish product quality essential, but also increased awareness of the general population with regard to changes in culinary habits.
