2005Co-Authors: Gavriel SalvendyAbstract:This study is an initiative to develop user-centered Web search tools based on the broadband Internet2 and software agent technology. A conceptual model analyzing the Web search process including Web Directory Browsing and text-based keyword search is presented from human cognitive aspects and system design. Four new user-centered features were proposed to improve the usability of the Internet2 search tools. They are the graphical Web Directory, which presents the hierarchical structure of a Web Directory with graphical interface; the attribute-aided search, which helps the users with domain knowledge in defining keywords; the dynamic hint, which provides interactive thesaurus help in keyword formation; and the classification for review, which supports the users' decision making by classifying search results systematically. The software prototype of the search engines and Web browsers were developed using dynamic HTML, ASP, and JavaScript. Three experiments were conducted with 80 subjects to test five hypotheses concerning the validity of the conceptual model and the effectiveness of the four user-centered features. By contrasting the user-centered features with the current Web Directory and search engines, the results of the hypotheses testing show that, in searching the Web, graphical Web Directory, attribute-aided search, and classification for review significantly improve the users' performance and satisfaction level. Dynamic hints improve the users' satisfaction level, but do not improve the users' performance. The results of the study also suggest guidelines for user interface design on information categorization, decision support, and memory workload for the usability of Web search tools.

An analysis of the characteristics and problems of current Web directories is presented. The feature graphical Web Directory for supporting information processing and decision making in Web Directory Browsing in Web search is proposed to improve users' performance and satisfaction. An experiment was conducted to test the effectiveness of the proposed feature. The results of the experiment indicated that (a) the enhancement of this feature improved users' initial and overall search performance by 32.6 and 43.4%, respectively, (b) the enhancement of this feature also improved users' satisfaction by 27.7%.

Extending Personal Computer Storages for Improved Access over Web Interfaces

However, the privacy of cloud services has become questionable as certain free cloud service providers use personal content for analytical purposes. Also, in order to share content over cloud storages, local files must be uploaded to cloud services, even for minor use cases such as Directory Browsing. This paper presents a novel solution which provides similar sharing capabilities to that of existing cloud services without having to store content in a cloud storage. The solution enables direct content Browsing, uploading and downloading using a web interface. The solution also provides the capability to generate links for locally stored content in desktop or personal computers. The presented solution utilizes peer-to-peer networking technologies which are scalable and more secure. Furthermore, the performance measures indicate competitive results in comparison with existing cloud service providers for content sharing.

Cloud Data Imager: A unified answer to remote acquisition of cloud storage areas
Digital Investigation, 2014Co-Authors: Corrado FedericiAbstract:Abstract The pervasive availability of cheap cloud computing services for data storage, either as persistence layer to applications or as mere object store dedicated to final users, is remarkably increasing the chance that cloud platforms potentially host evidence of criminal activity. Once presented a proper court order, cloud providers would be in the best position for extracting relevant data from their platforms in the most reliable and complete way. However, this kind of services are not so widespread to date and, therefore, the need to adopt a structured and forensically sound approach calls for innovative weaponry which leverage the data harvesting capabilities offered by the low level program interfaces exposed by providers. This paper describes the concepts and internals of the Cloud Data Imager Library, a mediation layer that offers a read only access to files and metadata of selected remote folders and currently supports access to Dropbox, Google Drive and Microsoft Skydrive storage facilities. A demo application has been build on top of the library which allows Directory Browsing, file content view and imaging of folder trees with export to widespread forensic formats.
