    Abstract:

    With the large numbers of acquisitions and divestitures that many organizations seem to incur these days, the problem of migrating from multiple and distinct Exchange 5.5 organizations to a single Exchange 2003 organization is a common one. For interorganizational interoperability and migration projects, there are a number of challenges to overcome: Directory Synchronization, mail flow, mailbox content migration, and public folder interoperability. The Mailbox Merge Wizard deals with moving the actual mailbox data, not with the other problems associated with interorganizational migration. The Exchange Server Migration Wizard installed automatically with Exchange 2003 includes support for straightforward migration of mailboxes from Exchange 5.5, Exchange 2000, and Exchange 2003 organizations into an Exchange 2003 organization, as long as the source Exchange organization is different from the target Exchange 2003 organization—that is, you cannot use this wizard for intraorganizational moves. The fundamental decision any company has to make when setting out to move from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2000/2003 is whether to perform an intraorganizational or an interorganizational migration.

    Abstract:

    The Site Replication Service (SRS) is a poorly understood component of Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2000. It is perceived to be a component that allows an Exchange 2003 server to synchronize Directory information with an Exchange 5.5 server. However, the SRS's role is merely to allow an Exchange 2003 server to participate in Exchange 5.5-style Directory replication. Only the Active Directory Connector provides the mechanism to perform Directory Synchronization between the Exchange 5.5 Directory Service and the Active Directory. The SRS has nothing to do with this exchange of information. The SRS presents itself as an Exchange 5.5 Directory Service to other Exchange 5.5 servers but runs on an Exchange 2003 server. Using the SRS to provide a shadow Exchange 5.5 Directory Service allows other Exchange 5.5 servers to continue with Exchange 5.5 Directory replication to a particular server in the same way that they always have, even if that particular server has been upgraded to Exchange 2003. The SRS works with the Active Directory Connector to make the whole concept of Exchange 5.5 Directory Service-to-Active Directory Synchronization easier.

    Abstract:

    This paper aims to present a possible alternative to direct file transfer in “challenged networks”, by using DTNbox, a recent application for peer-to-peer Directory Synchronization between DTN nodes. This application uses the Bundle Protocol (BP) to tackle long delays and link intermittency typical of challenged networks. The Directory Synchronization approach proposed in the paper consists of delegating the transmission of bulk data files to DTNbox, instead of modifying source applications to interface with the API of a specific BP implementation, or making use of custom scripts for file transfers. The validity of the proposed approach is investigated in the paper by considering a Mars to Earth interplanetary environment. Experiments are carried out by means of Virtual Machines running ION, the NASA-JPL implementation of DTN protocols. The results show that the Directory Synchronization approach is a valid alternative to direct transfer in interplanetary scenarios such as that considered in the paper.
