This pilot study aimed to examine feasibility of stress assessment using vocal affect display (VAD) indices as calculated by our proposed algorithms in a situation of comparison between different durations of stay in stricken area as Disaster Relief Operation, which is an environment highly likely to induce stress. Methods We used Sensibility Technology (ST) software to analyze VAD from voices of participants exposed to extreme stress for either long or short durations, and we proposed algorithms for indices of low VAD (VAD-L), high VAD (VAD-H), and VAD ratio (VAD-R), calculated from the intensity of emotions as measured by voice emotion analysis. As a preliminary validation, 12 members of Japan Self-Defense Forces dispatched overseas for long (3 months or more) or short (about a week) durations were asked to record their voices saying 11 phrases repeatedly across 6 days during their dispatch. Results In the validation, the two groups showed an inverse relationship in VAD-L and VAD-H, in that long durations in Disaster zones resulted in higher values of both VAD-L and VAD-R, and lower values of VAD-H, compared with short durations. Interestingly, phrases produced varied results in terms of group differences and VAD indices, demonstrating the sensitivity of the ST. Conclusions A comparison of the values obtained for the different groups of subjects clarified that there were tendencies of the VAD-L, VAD-H, and VAD-R indices observed for each group of participants. The results suggest the possibility of using ST software in the measurement of affective aspects related to mental health from vocal behavior

The model determines the locations of local depots and routing for last mile distribution after an earthquake. The model is extended to a two-stage stochastic program with random travel time to ascertain the locations of distribution centers. Small instances have been solved to optimality in GAMS. A variable neighborhood search algorithm is devised to solve the deterministic model. Computational results of our case study show that the unsatisfied demands can be significantly reduced at the cost of higher number of local depots and vehicles.

Delay-tolerant networks (DTN) proves to be a viable option for exchanging information during such scenarios. Different Disaster management agencies setup camps and mobilize their resources and manpower in the affected areas after the Disaster. Resource management is an integral part of post-Disaster Relief Operation. Each camp manages its own resource inventory. Periodic sharing of resource inventories from different camps is essential for maintaining a near-accurate unified global inventory at each node that enables successful search and retrieval of resource requests (queries). But, due to the intermittent network connectivity, maintaining such a consistent resource inventory and successful search/retrieval of queries becomes challenging. We map this post-Disaster resource management as a content sharing problem with strict time constraint and propose an automated, energy efficient and decentralized resource management scheme over DTN. The proposed scheme allows periodic group based sharing of resource inventories and supports search and retrieval of queries within a restricted time period. Here, resource inventories are shared among the group members by employing publish-subscribe mechanism. Moreover the queries are propagated to the group members based on the probability of encounters. This probabilistic propagation controls the unintended replication of query. Finally, the proposed scheme is evaluated through ONE simulator based on a realistic post-Disaster scenario of the 2015 Nepal earthquake. The results reveal that our proposed scheme outperforms one of the state-of-the-art content sharing schemes, discover-predict-deliver in terms of response delivery, average energy consumption and average delivery latency.

In spite of its inherent shortcomings of unreliability and delay, smart-phone based opportunistic network is gaining immense popularity in the research community due to its applicability in different adverse and extreme communication scenarios where traditional communication infrastructure is either unavailable or incapacitated for a long time. Considerable research has been conducted till date to design efficient network architecture for emergency data dissemination in intermittently connected/challenged networks. Different architectures (ranging from flat to multi-tier) are proposed for implementing opportunistic DTN keeping in view of specific application requirements. However, very few of these proposed architectures have been examined from the perspective of a post Disaster communication. Moreover, most DTN architectures are designed by aiming towards increasing delivery probability and reducing latency and as a whole, maximizing network throughput; with very little emphasis on its energy efficiency. The impact of different mobility patterns on existing DTN routing algorithms with respect to data dissemination and energy consumption has also not been studied so far. Our objective, in this paper, is to investigate the impact of different mobility patterns on existing DTN routing protocols and existing DTN architectures and subsequently, come up with a suitable energy efficient DTN framework combining suitable architecture and routing protocol that may be used to offer different Disaster management services during post-Disaster Relief Operation. We have done an extensive simulation on ONE simulator with different categories of well-known existing DTN architectures, mobility models, DTN routing protocols to study the network performance in terms of delivery probability, energy efficiency and overhead ratio. Based on the simulation results, we have tried to figure out a suitable combination of energy efficient architecture, mobility model and routing protocol that fits well in the post Disaster communication scenario.
