disciplining writing the case for multi Disciplinary writing groups to support writing for publication by higher degree by research candidates in the humanities arts and social sciences
Social Science Research Network, 2014Co-Authors: Denise Cuthbert, Ceridwen Spark, Eliza Kate BurkeAbstract:This article addresses multi-Disciplinary writing groups in supporting writing for publication for higher degree by research candidates in the Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. Drawing on focus group discussions with postgraduate research students from the Faculty of Arts at Monash University in Australia who participated in the writing groups, it investigates the participants’ perceptions of the multi-Disciplinary nature of the groups and some of the benefits of sharing writing with fellow postgraduate research students from different fields of study. Discussing both the strengths and weaknesses of the multi-disciplinarity of the groups as identified by participants, the authors suggest that such groups can provide a forum for postgraduates to develop their ‘professional’ academic identity and develop their writing beyond the Context of their theses and can have some unexpected benefits to participants’ sense of themselves as Disciplinary proponents. The multi-Disciplinary Context is thus considered as providing a level playing field in which postgraduates may approach the writing process as a shared methodology, encompassing a suite of specialised but generic skills that crossDisciplinary boundaries.

Abstract: "Casanova-Gatto" Collection: contribution to the study of the history of research in the La Cuevagorge (Humahuaca, Jujuy) and the reconstruction of its past. The history of the research carried out in the La Cueva gorge (Humahuaca department, Jujuy province) until the end of the 20th century, started with the conformation of a collection that resulted from explorations done in 1931 by Eduardo Casanova and Santiago Gatto, commissioners of the National Museum of Natural History “Bernardino Rivadavia”. The following article proposes an analysis of the history of the conformation of the “Casanova-Gatto” collection, currently deposited in the Ethnographic Museum of Buenos Aires “Juan B. Ambrosetti” and the InterDisciplinary Institute of Tilcara (both institutions dependent on the University of Buenos Aires). We will also assess the scope and limits of the supporting material (pottery, lithic, bones, metal) and the scarce documentary record regarding this collection, in order to reconstruct how it was formed, and assess its past and present role in the construction of narratives and/or interpretations about the past of the La Cueva gorge. Some of these narratives were based on Casanova´s original interpretation from the 1930s, despite the temporal and theoretical distance between those research instances. Other narratives interpreted, and still do, the past of the area from alternative perspectives. The latter stem both from changes in theoretical and methodological approaches and from new data gathered from the study of related archaeological sites and other collections assembled in the past, but only recently studied (for example, the collection prepared by Benjamín Muniz Barreto with archaeological material from the same area, using as basis the works of Karl Schuel in 1919). This article shows how the history of these investigations and their socio-historical Disciplinary Context influence the development and results of studies in the part of the Argentinian Northwest.

AIBO Robot Mortuary Rites in the Japanese Cultural Context*
2018 IEEE RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS), 2018Co-Authors: Elena Knox, Katsumi WatanabeAbstract:In 1999 Sony released the AlBO Entertainment Robot, selling more than 150,000 units worldwide until 2006. By 2014, Sony had stopped offering upgrades and maintenance for the product, and owners were faced with the fact their pet-like robots would “die”. Some shrines and temples in Japan hold ningyo kuyo̅ or mass funerals for dolls and other toys. At the suggestion of a small Japanese tech-repair company called A-Fun, one temple began offering a Buddhist funeral ceremony for AIBOs. Approximately 700 AIBOs have so far received a funeral service. This paper surveys A-Fun`s maintenance services for old AIBOs, the AIBO funerals, and Sony's new 2018 AIBO release, in the cross-Disciplinary Context of human-machine relations in Japan and elsewhere. Drawing on the author's interviews with key actors, it articulates links between philosophy and neuroscience to explain tendencies toward zoomorphism in robot design. Perceiving presence (sonzai kan) and sensibility (kansei) in objects is a culturally contingent phenomenon. Whereas ways of conceiving the partly animate are largely absent from Western philosophy, in the case of AIBO ownership in Japan there is a reverential mindfulness of the technology's inherent contradictions.
