    Abstract:

    The author argues for the potential of Discourse Ethics as a framework for guiding and assessing Ethical action in organizational communication. Habermas's Discourse Ethics offers an intersubjective procedure for developing and challenging Ethical norms through reasoned public communication. After examining the development of Discourse Ethics and reviewing existing organizational applications of Habermas's ideas, the author then forms the principle of universalization into five steps necessary for an organization to enact a Discourse Ethic. These steps are used to assess the Ethical problems and to identify alternative courses of action relating to the American Red Cross's Liberty Fund case.

    On the basis of the theory of communicative action,Habermas put forward the theory of Discourse Ethic ideology.He proposed that communicative actions are essentially a Discourse relationship between the main bodies with language as the media.In his theory,Discourse is a core concept with the generalization principle and the Discourse principle as its two main principles and cognitive doctrine and procedure doctrine as its basic feature.By building the theory of Discourse Ethic ideology,Habermas finished the reasoning process of his communicative theory,extended the communicative sense to the practical level from the theoretical level.By taking the theory of Discourse Ethic ideology as a organic part of communicative action theory,a standard basis of the critical social theory was built.

    Despite clear parallels between Jurgen Habermas's Discourse Ethics and recent scholarship in feminist Ethics, feminists are often suspicious of Discourse Ethics and have kept themselves mostly separate from the field. By developing a sustained application of Habermas's Discourse Ethics to friendship, Keller demonstrates that feminist misgivings of Discourse Ethics are largely misplaced and that Habermas's theory can be used to develop a compelling moral phenomenology of interpersonal relations.

    This article critically explores what it might mean to ‘represent nature’ in discursive dialogue and whether such representation must necessarily be anthropocentric in a substantive rather than merely trivial sense. The analysis also examines whether, and to what extent, it is legitimate to inscribe ecocentric norms into the procedures of discursive dialogue as a matter of justice. Against Habermas, it is argued that the capacity for self‐directedness, however rudimentary, rather than communicative competence per se, should be accepted as the basis for moral considerability. Habermas's objection to allowing nature's interests to condition the dialogue are shown to be primarily epistemological rather than normative (that is, nature cannot speak, we cannot speak for nature and therefore it is not morally considerable).
