    The design of the positioning controllers in Optical Disk Drives are to-day subjected to a trade off between an acceptable suppression of external disturbances and an acceptable immunity against surfaces defects. In this paper an algorithm is suggested to detect defects of the Disk surface com-bined with an observer and a Linear Quadratic Regulator. As a result, the mentioned trade off is minimized and the playability of the tested compact Disk Player is considerably enhanced. I

    By measuring the current through the coil of the actuators in the optical pick-up in a compact Disk Player, open loop para-metric system identification can be performed. The parame-ters are identified by minimizing the least-squares loss func-tion of the ARX model. The only parameter which cannot be identified in open loop is the optical gain. This is therefore estimated in closed loop. Practical results are analyzed and show very accurate estimates of the real parameters.

    Abstract:

    The compact Disk (CD) Player was one of the major audio innovations of the 1980s in the Netherlands. For studies of the temporal and social diffusion pattern of the CD Player and the compact Disks, both cultural and economic theories about innovations and music consumption are available. In this paper, these theories are combined in six working hypotheses concerning earlier adoption. The empirical analysis includes both time-invariant and time-varying variables and consumer characteristics. Event history analysis, the technique used in this article, enables one to incorporate these kinds of variables simultaneously in a dynamic model. Compared with the diffusion models usually employed by means of longitudinal analysis, event history analysis is a significant improvement in studying the development of the CD market in the Netherlands.
