The Pan African medical journal, 2014Co-Authors: Caroline W Kabiru, Chimaraoke O Izugbara, Joyce Wairimu, Djesika Amendah, Alex EzehAbstract:Sub-Saharan Africa suffers substantial shortages in doctorates. Yet, PhD training is key to building mastery of specific subject-matters and equipping researchers with the high-level skills needed to design, implement and evaluate development interventions and activities. This editorial describes the African Doctoral Dissertation Research Fellowship (ADDRF) Program, which was established in 2008 to enhance research capacity in Africa through the provision of Doctoral fellowships and targeted training workshops to facilitate rigorous research addressing governance, equity, health and population-related issues on the continent. The Program has supported 133 Doctoral students from across the region. This supplemental issue of the Pan-African Medical Journal showcases the research of 14 of these fellows.

Yet, Africa's higher education institutions that are mandated to foster this capacity lack adequate resources to generate and apply knowledge, raising the need for innovative approaches to enhance research capacity. In this paper, we describe a newly-developed program to support PhD research in health and population sciences at African universities, the African Doctoral Dissertation Research Fellowship (ADDRF) Program. We also share our experiences implementing the program. As health research capacity-strengthening in Africa continues to attract attention and as the need for such programs to be African-led is emphasized, our experiences in developing and implementing the ADDRF offer invaluable lessons to other institutions undertaking similar initiatives.

an integrative summary of Doctoral Dissertation research in quality management
Production and Operations Management, 2009Co-Authors: Eric P Jack, Paul Stephens, James R EvansAbstract:Since 1980, practitioner interest in the field of quality management (qm) has grown significantly, resulting in academic researchers embracing QM as a legitimate discipline of study. One approach to evaluating the intellectual health of a discipline is an examination of Doctoral Dissertation research. This work both complements and extends other published reviews of the quality management discipline by analyzing Doctoral Dissertation research since 1981, categorizing this research, examining shifts in major research themes, evaluating data collection and analysis methodologies, and discussing general trends in this research area. Our findings suggest that the challenges in QM have become more interdisciplinary and integrated, and reveal an encouraging trend toward more rigorous research methodologies and the increased use of theories from other disciplines, leading to a more mature body of research in this field.
