    Abstract:

    This contribution presents a redescription of three Labronema species originally described from Italy: L. angeloi, L. carusoi and L. pulchrum. Their type material is re-examined, described and illustrated with line drawings and micrographs. New information about these species is provided, including morphometrics and relevant morphological features. Morphologically, the three species form a homogeneous group, but can be separated by significant differences in the structure of female genital system, cuticle thickness on the tail, and shape and size of the spicules. Labronema pulchrum is regarded as a junior synonym of L. duhouxi.

    Abstract:

    Labronema ferox is redescribed on the basis of two females and four males from the USA. It is characterised by its 2.90-4.45 mm long body, lip region offset by deep constriction, 31-39  μ m broad and slightly sucker-like with distinctly protruding perioral liplets, odontostyle 34-37  μ m long with aperture occupying 37-42% its length, neck 673-883  μ m long, pharyngeal expansion occupying 48-52% of total neck length, female genital system didelphic-amphidelphic, uterus long and complex, including an intermediate pars musculosa , vulva longitudinal (V = 51-54), caudal region short and rounded (27-39  μ m, c = 93-135, c′=0.6-0.8), spicules 76-89  μ m long, and 20-25 nearly contiguous ventromedian supplements with an hiatus. Previous information about the species is analysed and discussed in the light of the present redescription. A new name, Labronemella zullinii sp. n., is proposed for the two females from Nepal described by Zullini in 1973. This new characterisation of L. ferox lays the foundations to study the taxonomy of the genus in more detail.

    Abstract:

    The evolutionary relationships of rounded-tailed dorylaimid genera traditionally classified under the subfamily Qudsianematinae in Qudsianematidae are analysed and discussed with an integrative approach, including morphological features, postembryonic development and D2–D3 expansion segments of 28S rDNA gene sequences. Evidences are provided that support a closer relationship of these genera with members of Dorylaimidae rather than with other representatives of Qudsianematidae. Specifically, remarkable are the changes observed in the morphology of caudal region (tail) during the postembryonic development, with a common pattern: the existence of one or more long-tailed juvenile stages that result in short, rounded-tailed adult stage. The new phylogeny derived from such evidences does not match the current classification system, and, consequently, several taxonomic changes are proposed to improve it: eight genera are transferred from Qudsianematidae to Dorylaimidae, the new subfamily Labronematinae is proposed to accommodate them, a new classification in presented for Dorylaimidae, and emended diagnoses are given for the family Dorylaimidae and the subfamily Qudsianematinae.

    Abstract:

    Axonchoides smokyensis sp. n., collected from a natural forest area in Tennessee, USA, is described and illustrated, including LM and SEM pictures as well as molecular (rRNA SSU-ITS1 and LSU D2/D3) sequences. The new species is characterised by its body length of 2.56-3.18 mm, lip region continuous and 10-12 μm wide, odontostyle 10-13 μm long, neck 662-789 μm long, anterior portion of pharynx enlarging gradually, pharyngeal expansion 407-548 μm long or 60-70% of the total neck length and surrounded by a strong muscular sheath with nearly longitudinal bands, female genital system pseudodidelphic-monodelphic with anterior branch lacking a functional ovary and posterior one bearing a long and tripartite uterus, V = 42-46, female tail slightly clavate (27-34 μm, c = 84-105, c′ = 0.8-1.0), male tail short and rounded (34-38 μm, c = 87-113, c′ = 0.7-0.9), spicules 49-53 μm long, and five or six widely spaced ventromedian supplements outside the range of the spicules. The taxonomy of Axonchoides is discussed on the base of morphological and molecular evidence, and an emended diagnosis proposed. It was easily differentiated from other sequenced dorylaimid taxa, but phylogenetic analysis from SSU and LSU failed satisfactorily to resolve its placement in Dorylaimina.

    Abstract:

    Nematodes of different trophic groups control distinct energy channels, though their exact trophic links remain little understood. Molecular data suggest that soil nematodes are readily consumed by a wide range of other soil animals, but the significance of these interactions remains unknown. We used stable isotope analysis to gain a better understanding of the trophic niches of soil nematodes in a boreal forest. We tested four taxonomic groups, Mononchida, Dorylaimida, Plectidae and Tylenchidae (mostly from the genus Filenchus), representing predators, omnivores, bacterivores and root-fungal feeders, respectively. To assess the trophic position of nematodes, we used a set of reference species including herbivorous, saprophagous and predatory macro-invertebrates, oribatid and mesostigmatid mites, and collembolans. The trophic positions of the investigated groups of soil nematodes generally agree with common knowledge. All nematodes were enriched in 13C relative to Picea abies roots and litter, as well as to fungal mycelium analyzed. Root-fungal feeders Tylenchidae had δ15N values similar to those of earthworms, enchytraeids and Entomobrya collembolans. In contrast, bacterivorous Plectidae were enriched in 15N compared to saprophagous macroinvertebrates and most mesofauna species. Omnivorous Dorylaimida and predatory Mononchida were further enriched in 15N and their isotopic signature was very similar to that of predatory arthropods. These data confirm a clear separation of nematodes into microbial feeders (Tylenchidae and Plectidae) and predators (Mononchida and Dorylaimida). They also suggest that the trophic position of soil animals is largely independent of their body size, the smallest soil predators like nematodes occupying the same trophic level as predatory macro-invertebrates. Our data failed to confirm that bacterivorous or predatory soil nematodes are important prey for oribatid mites or collembolans. The patterns of isotopic signatures indicate that soil nematodes and the bulk of soil animals depend on resources derived from a dominating upper-canopy tree (P. abies) via the detrital rather than mycorrhizal pathway. Herbaceous plants and dwarf shrubs do not contribute significantly to the energy budget of soil communities in the boreal forest studied.

    We recorded 46 species of soil and plant parasitic nematodes belonging to the Orders Dorylaimida and Tylenchida from rhizospheric soil and roots of banana plantations in Paschim Medinipur district, West Bengal from March 2004 to February 2006. Dorylaimida is represented by 29 species under 21 genera of 8 families; 8 species are new to science. Tylenchida is represented by 17 species belonging to 11 genera under 7 families; 4 species are new to science. Among the 46 species, 15 species (13 dorylaimids and 2 tylenchids) were reported for the first time from West Bengal and 5 species (3 dorylaimids and 2 tylenchids) for the first time from India. Sixteen species (12 dorylaimids and 4 tylenchids) were recorded for the first time from the rhizosphere of banana.

    During a faunal survey from March 2004 to February 2006 in 29 blocks of Paschim Medinipur district of West Bengal, India, 46 species of soil and plant parasitic nematodes, associated with banana (Musa paradisiaca L. cv. Kanthali) plantations were recorded. Amongst 46 species, 29 belong to the order Dorylaimida and 17 species are under the order Tylenchida. The species are categorized into five different trophic groups viz., plant feeders, bacteria feeders, hyphal feeders, predators and omnivores. The number of plant feeders was maximum (17 species), followed by omnivores (16 spp.), predators (8 spp.), bacteria feeders (3 spp.) and hyphal feeders (2 spp.). Present study indicates that phytophagous nematodes dominated other trophic groups of nematodes in banana plantations in Paschim Medinipur district of West Bengal. Resumen: Durante un reconocimiento faunistico realizado de marzo de 2004 a febrero de 2006 en 29 bloques del distrito Paschim Medinipur, Bengala Occidental, India, se registraron 46 especies de nematodos del suelo y parasitos de plantas, asociados con plantaciones de platano o banano (Musa paradisiaca L. cv. Kanthali). Entre las 46 especies, 29 especies pertenecen al orden Dorylaimida y 17 al orden Tylenchida. Las especies se clasificaron en cinco grupos troficos diferentes: consumidores de plantas, consumidores de bacterias, consumidores de hifas, depredadores y omnivoros. El numero de consumidores de plantas fue el mas grande (17 especies), seguido de los omnivoras (16 especies), los depredadores (8 especies), los consumidores de bacterias (3 especies) y consumidores de hifas (2 especies). Of these, 8 species belong to the order Dorylaimida and 6 species were under the order Tylenchida. The species are categorized into four feeding guilds viz. plant feeder, bacterial feeder, predator and omnivore. Numerically plant feeders constituted 46%, bacterial feeders 10%, predator 11% and omnivores constituted 33% of nematodes in the field. The study revealed that plant parasitic nematodes predominated in the banana field over others. Rotylenchulus reniformis, one of the most serious pests of banana appears to be the most abundant species in the field.

    Abstract:

    The relative abundance of dorylaimids, tylenchids and mononchids fauna in a guava orchard, situated at Shalipur (West) in Baruipur Subdivision, South 24-Parganas district, West Bengal, India was observed. In this orchard the population of two genera of Tylenchida, three genera of omnivorous and predatory Dorylaimida and three genera of Mononchida were counted at one month interval from May, 2004 to April, 2006. The population of dorylaimids and tylenchids were greatly increased in the month of July along with the population of mononchids. However in the rest of the period during these years, population densities of tylenchids and dorylaimids remained comparatively low with little fluctuations. Positive correlations were observed between tylenchids with mononchids, omnivorous and predatory dorylaimids as well as with the combined population of omnivorous and predatory nematodes. The tylenchids nematodes maintained parallel population abundance with that of the omnivores and predators without showing any reduction in population density, which was evident from the regression analysis.
