Double Contingency and social order seen from niklas luhmann s systems theory
Sociológica (México), 2013Co-Authors: Sergio Pignuoli OcampoAbstract:This article reconstructs the concept of Double Contingency in Niklas Luhmann’s social systems theory. Our analysis is organized around three axes. First, we study the connection between the problems of Double Contingency and of social order, outstanding among which are the critical reception of Talcott Parsons and phenomenology. In the second, we examine the hypothesis of the emergence of social order, where the reception of early German romanticism and the theory of emergence are particularly relevant. In the third, we dialogue with the secondary bibliography, fundamental for situating and contextualizing the reconstruction achieved.

knowledge base for an expert system used for steady state security analysis
International Journal of Electrical Power & Energy Systems, 1994Co-Authors: C Tinguely, A Bart, A GermondAbstract:The purpose of this paper is to present a way to acquire some knowledge for the development of an expert system for power system security analysis. The paper discusses principally the problem of security in steady state and especially the problem of overloaded branches. The proposed method is based on a hybrid approach which includes rules and numerical computations to evaluate the effect of outages on the power system. The basic idea is to use a systematic analysis of the single contingencies to build a knowledge base. In real time the knowledge base is used to perform a single Contingency analysis around the working point for which the base case has been calculated. The same knowledge base is also used to carry out a Double Contingency analysis at the working point for which it has been established. Rules are extracted by considering similarities between the knowledge bases obtained for different characteristic operating states. An advantage of the proposed method is that, by using filtering, it provides a general way to extract rules for each Contingency

parsons luhmann and the theorem of Double Contingency
Journal of Classical Sociology, 2002Co-Authors: Raf VanderstraetenAbstract:This article analyzes the ego/alter ego constellation of social interaction. Every social interaction constitutes a situation with Double Contingency, which is recognized as such by both sides: both know that both know that one could also act differently. The circularity of the relationship brings about indeterminacy; self-commitment would presuppose that others commit themselves and vice versa. How is this infinity problem solved? How can we account for the possibility of social interaction, and social order? Both Talcott Parsons and Niklas Luhmann have devoted considerable attention to the theorem of Double Contingency. Here, I analyze their theoretical formulations on this topic.

Double Contingency transmission outages in a generation and reactive power deficient area
IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, 2000Co-Authors: L Pereira, D DeberryAbstract:A methodology is described that studies all N-2 outages-instead of selecting specific N-2 Double Contingency events-and possibly missing some critical ones. Using a power flow program and the capabilities, power and speed of modern computers, a case study was performed for more than 25000 N-2 outages of a 230 kV system in a generation and reactive power deficient area. The data generated by the computer rims was stored in a database program, and reports were generated using different "queries" for analyzing the data. The results of the N-2 outage studies were directly applicable to the analysis and selection of undervoltage relay settings for load shedding. The performance of critical buses for which the power flow simulation diverges was studied with V-Q analysis.
