This property provides mechanical fingerprints of a cell’s Dysfunctionality. The softness (kilopascal range) and thickness (2–15 μm) of mammalian cells imply that the force exerted by the probe might be affected by the stiffness of the solid support. This observation makes infinite sample thickness models unsuitable to describe quantitatively the forces and deformations on a cell. Here, we report a general theory to determine the true Young’s moduli of a single cell from a force-indentation curve. Analytical expressions are deduced for common geometries such as flat punches, paraboloids, cones, needles, and nanowires. For a given cell and indentation, the influence of the solid support on the measurements is reduced by using sharp and high aspect ratio tips. The theory is validated by finite element simulations.

Over the years, problems with sexual functionality have been related to stress. A systematic review of the articles concerning sexual Dysfunctionality is presented in this article, with emphasis in the past five years in order to highlight new aspects and implications. Method: The study was based on relevant articles from the PubMed and Wiley online library, using the combination of keywords stress and sexual Dysfunctionality, while excluding articles prior to 2010. Results: The analysis shows that the phenomenon is complex and multifactorial. Variables such as depression, PTSD, lifestyle, gender, personality and positive coping play a crucial role. Research findings also indicate that sexual Dysfunctionality is often misdiagnosed and not immediately taken care of. Conclusion: The severity of the pathology regarding sexual Dysfunctionality calls for immediate planning and coping. Finally future research directions are discussed.

Antipode, 2010Co-Authors: Proinnsias BreathnachAbstract:The transition from Fordism to post-Fordism has been accompanied by profound changes in the spatiality of west European states. The hierarchical, top-down and redistributive structures that typified the Fordist welfare state have been replaced by more complex spatial configurations as elements of economic and political power have shifted both downwards to subnational territorial levels and upwards to the supranational level. A major debate has developed around the nature of these emerging forms of state spatiality and of the processes underpinning their formation. This paper examines how these processes have operated in the particular case of the Republic of Ireland. Here, the spatiality of the state was founded on a peculiar post-colonial combination of a localised populist politics and a centralised state bureaucracy. While this arrangement was quite suited to the spatial dispersal of industrial branch plants which underpinned regional policy in the 1960s and 1970s, it has become increasingly problematic with the more recent emergence of new trends in the nature and locational preferences of inward investment. This is reflected in the profound conflicts that have attended the formulation and implementation of the National Spatial Strategy, introduced in 2002. The result is a national space economy whose increasing Dysfunctionality may now be compromising the very development model upon which Ireland’s recent spectacular economic growth has been built.

We hypothesized that relationships of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c) with PON1 and apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1) and/or PON1 with ApoA1 under conditions of hyperglycaemia and oxidative stress might reveal HDL functionality. We investigated relationships between PON1, LPO, and lipid risk markers in T2DM subjects and compared them with those in healthy subjects. Methods A total of 107 Caucasian subjects, 67 T2DM outpatients (mean age 52.2 ± 6.9 years) and 40 healthy subjects (mean age 48.1 ± 7.5 years) were included in the study. Serum levels of total cholesterol (CHOL-T), HDL-c, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-c), triglycerides (TG), apolipoprotein B (ApoB), ApoA1, LPO, and PON1 activity were measured. Non-HDL-c, ApoB/ApoA1 and non-HDL/HDL (lipid risk indexes) were calculated.
