    Abstract:

    Throughout 2019, NASA celebrated historic anniversaries and announced bold new programs generating excitement about earth and space exploration. One of the most notable events was the celebration of the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 historic first steps on the Moon. Complementing this anniversary event were the additional activities and events conducted across the agency that highlighted the many science achievements that were attained across all of NASAs Science Mission Directorate (SMD) Divisions (earth, planetary, heliophysics, and astrophysics). Further excitement was generated through NASAs Artemis program which plans to send the first woman and next man to the surface of the Moon. NASA continues to inspire the public including learners of all ages around the world. Building on this momentum, in October 2019, the Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science (ARES) Science Engagement team partnered with the Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI) and the Girl Scouts of San Jacinto to host an event that enabled Girl Scouts to earn recently released space science badges developed by the Reach for the Stars: NASA Science for Girls Scouts Program. The event celebrated SMD science and highlighted Earths Moon and International Observe the Moon Night (InOMN) while facilitating the earning of the NASA inspired space science badges. This event was coordinated and led by the ARES Science Engagement team as part of their collaborative work and involvement in NASAs SMD Science Activation Program

    International Observe the Moon Night (InOMN) is an annual world-wide public engagement event designed with the goal of inspiring the public to want to learn more about NASAs contributions to planetary science and exploration, using the Earths Moon as an entryway, and to provide connections to do so [1,2,3]. InOMN will celebrate its 6th anniversary on September 19, 2015.Registration statistics from the past five years show an average of 500 InOMN events are held in 50 countries and 45 U.S. states per year (Figure 1), with over half of the events occurring outside the U.S. Host survey data indicate that approximately 55,000 to 75,000people participate in InOMN events each year. The consistent hosting of InOMN events across the U.S. and around the world indicates an interest by hosts in sharing lunar and planetary science with their local communities, as well as connecting with a larger international group of fellow space enthusiasts on an annual basis

  • Miniaturized low power LIBS system for in-situ exploration of Solar System bodies without atmosphere

    Abstract:

    LIBS is a very useful tool for robotic in-situ space exploration because of its remote capability and the omission of sample preparation, and was extraterrestrially employed for the first time on NASAs Mars Science Laboratory [1]. Space missions have severe constraints on size, mass and power consumption limiting the capabilities of the instruments on board in comparison to laboratory instrumentation on Earth. The German Aerospace Center is currently developing a miniaturized LIBS instrument of ~1 kg in mass with a low power laser of approximately 5 mJ pulse energy for pioneering missions to explore planets, Moons and asteroids in the Solar System. While Martian atmospheric conditions are close to ideal for the LIBS technique, low pressure environments such as on most of these bodies are more challenging [2,3]. The instrument has to provide sufficient irradiance to create a suitable plasma for scientific analysis while still meeting the aforementioned limitations on mass and energy. With a prototype miniature LIBS setup, measurements on different materials were conducted. Regolith simulants for the Earths Moon and the Martian Moon Phobos [4] were investigated as well as pure salts to test the capabilities for major element detection as well as for volatiles.
